 Asked Woodward for assurances United would be competing for trophies? And he believed him!?

"Yeah! Of course we'll be competing for trophies! The Europa League, the League cup, Charity shield are all trophies. Don't worry about it, here's £500k a week"
What a load of bollocks like. "Yeah Dave, in the six years since SAF left we've never competed for a single major honour but that's going to change "

As if it had nothing to do with the big salary.

Really, little Ole.
I know you like it but stop.
I don't see why you're taking it so badly. United's job is so big that even two world renowned managers were proven out of depth here. That would terrify even the best of managers but not our Ole. Sure his only honours as manager came 6 years ago when he won the equivalent of the FA cup in Norway. Since then he was proven out of depth at Cardiff and then he spent 5 years with Molde winning absolutely nothing. But hey, you must admire his positive attitude of thinking that he is perfect for the United job despite there's absolutely nothing on his CV that suggest that he's good enough for the job. Anyway whatever happens I hope that people will keep things at a certain perspective. Rather then criticising his many many limitations they should applaud his courage for taking such a massive job. That's why I keep reminding people that Ole is just a very positive guy who thought he's good enough for United when in reality his level is closer to a typical Championship manager.

Anyway back to the subject.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not upset he’s signed, but I’m also not over the moon he’s signed. I’m non aligned on this one.

I take particular issue with the way he’s run his contract down but realised no one is willing to pay him what he wants, just feels like he’s angling for the Madrid move still.

His form has been sketchy since the World Cup, to the point Spain have dropped him. He was poor for us last season and yet he’s got a bumper new deal out of it.

He has been great for us in the past and I’m hoping he returns to his absolute best now but just because he’s signed a new contract and we all want it to be true, doesn’t mean it actually will. In fact, I’ll put solid money on him making a mistake in one of the next two games.
If he left on free then I can see at least 2 top clubs being interested in him (PSG and Juventus).

@devilish, you can write all that without condescending attitude towards a club legend and quite frankly childish nicknames.
Also he won a league title in Norway, 2 of those to be exact, from where did that equivalent of FA cup come from.

its not condescending but fact. Ole is the best 4th striker in the club's history but in terms of manager's experience he's just a little guy.

Let's treat him for what he is ie an inexperienced manager who thinks he's good enough for a big club. Hopefully he either learns quickly or leave before he does damage

Fingers crossed he gets back to his best as soon as possible. Very glad to see he renewed and a good statement from the club.

DDG renewing has also likely saved us forking out £100m on a new keeper in the summer too

But what about juventus? You said how Juventus made Woodward and co look like a fools by agreeing deal with De Gea already.

I was looking forward to watch him playing in Serie A.

Fergie's Backyard.
6/8 years he has been here have been pretty bad, so is he staying as he believes we can win the top titles again (and soon) or because of a lack of opportunities elsewhere?

Either way I hope he is back to his best now this is settled. It will let us concentrate on the bigger problem areas of the squad without having to worry about finding a new keeper.

They had in turn learnt it from Real. Juventus were totally outsmarted on the Zidane's deal. The way Real poached the guy persuading him to cause all sort of nuisance to join them and only them lead to Juve losing out on their most marketable player at a time when marketing and sponsorships was starting to become mainstream in football. Juve took their pound of flesh by asking for ridiculous money for him, which, they invested wisely. However I can't help thinking that losing Zidane in his prime, at a time when sponsorship and marketing was becoming a big thing ended up hurting them big time. Beckham and him were instrumental in turning Real into a huge money making machine.

Utterly delighted. Best news of the past few years. Now make him permanent club captain and watch him get back to his majestic best :keano:

@Dante what has that got to do with our new signings and rumoured signings all being British? Letting De Gea go on a free at this period was never an option for the club. Funny enough we got linked with Pickford as his replacement.

Also you shouldnt take everything related to United and British players so serious, that was more of a nonsensical post anyway, but not surprised you replied. I dont care if we have 11 British players on the pitch, i am an advocate of having a strong core, as long as the quality is right. Often times the fee isnt and sometimes the quality as well, but this club has lost some sense in the transfer market a long time ago. It is funny that we only go that route under Ole, and while some players make sense (Sancho or Maddison), others dont, like Rice. Just because they are English or British doesnt make them great now or a few years back, see Dier. Small but significant differences. Oh yeah, and i would like to see more of Gomes, Tuanzebe and Greenwood by the way and i was also for giving Henderson a chance to replace De Gea. As long as it makes sense, which sometimes it doesnt here. We need to be smarter in the market.

I'll call out bigotry anywhere I see it.

But I'm glad you're finally willing to accept a United team with any combination of nationalities.

I would also be glad to see you defend non British players as enthusiastically in the future as well.

You see its not quite as easy as that when you're not in a position of power is it?

The other option is to let the likes of DDG, Martial, Rashford etc leave for nothing. Then go out and spend big money on replacing them and equally big money tempting their replacements to move over when the club is losing its star players.

I really don't get some on this forum. The club is clearly being rebuilt. We are signing and retaining talented players who still have longevity. Some renewals have been done to protect assets (Rojo, Jones, Mata) which again is sensible. The outgoing Sanchez, Darmian and Smalling show we fully intend to cycle these players out during the next stage.

Rebuilding takes time and you have to get behind it and stick with the programme.
I was joking and increasing the wages as others have on this thread hence the white text. Im fully behind the the new direction the club are taking.

He might be inexperienced but in the time he has been manager he's shifted out more deadwood and brought in players that want to play for the club and give their all. Other top experienced managers have tried and failed to deal with the club and the issues throughout the squad. LVG was too pedestrian for this team, Moyes clueless and out of his depth, Jose signing ready made flops and being outdated. The work Ole has to do is incredible to sort this club out, if he doesn't last in the job then the next manager has a great base. Ole also convinced DDG to sign a new contract with the club, this shows that the players are behind the manager and believe in the project.

Deadwood isn't shifted by the managers but by those who are responsible of getting rid of deadwood. They are the ones who find buyers for deadwood and they are the one who must accept the terms given. I guess little Woody is finally learning how to do that.

Ole is responsible of tactics, results, in persuading players to come and in putting pressure on the board to buy new players. Hoping that we get that 1 Penalty per game to get points isn't really a great tactic at all. There again we are talking of a manager who was struggling even at Norwegian league level. I mean he hasn't won the league there in how many years 4-5 years?

He just wasn't winning anything in a league that's very very average. Yet he is expected to be good enough to rebuild a top club that is in a mess

The league is average as feck, but Rosenborg has and always will be a big challenge for all the other teams to get trophies.

5 years is a long time. A top manager would have orchestrated a way to outwit them. Sir Alex did it with Motherwell and Aberdeen. Ffs even Mclaren did it with Twente. Both faced a tougher challenge then Ole did

Ole seem to be yesterday news even in Norway. He took Molde just months after they won the league and hasn't won anything in 5 years

Ole did it during his first time there, with the Norwegian equivalent of Spurs.

My point is that at this ridiculously low level a half decent manager can easily bridge the gap just as Mclaren and LVG did with Twente and AZ respectively. In his second stint Ole took Molde months after being crowned champions and after half a decade he won nothing at all. That sound more lik yesterday news to me rather then United's saviour

Also aren't the Norwegian Spurs favourites to win this year's league?

I agree with your point, I was only disagreeing with the part where it came across as if he wasn't a massive success at Molde initially.
There is also the part where Molde has sold a lot of their better players over the years. They put themselves in a position where they were a destination for top talents wanting to get out of Norway so they could get good fees.

Again, I too think Ole is very inexperienced and if he was at any other club with his second-half job last season I would've asked for him to be fired, but due to his status at United and his experience with the club and city I want to give him a chance to prove my doubts wrong before I speak ill of his work.

That's a situation most small clubs face. Also correct me if i am wrong but weren't Molde champions months before Ole joined in 2015? They also seem to be favourites to win the league this season

I think Ole bit far more then he can chew.

They lost a lot of their key players that year.
Linnes - the national team right-back, Nyland - the national team GK at the time, Berge - one of the national teams CB's, Hestad - Their long-time captain and club legend who was their most experienced player, Kamara - National team striker and a lot of other first-teamers or close to first-teamers like Hussain, Høiland & Singh.
Saying they were Champions is correct in the same way as saying Ajax was semi-finalists in the CL, but you'd have to take even more away from them.

Do note that in Norway I've only ever had affinity for Rosenborg who are bitter rivals of Molde. But there is no denying that Ole did a great job at Molde.

What he did in 2011-2012 might be decent, maybe even at par to LVG's campaign at AZ or Mclaren's at Twente. However that happened 7 years ago. In his second stint he took Molde and after 5 years he won absolutely nothing. Now while Ole is struggling with United Molde seem en route of winning the league title again. There's nothing in his last 6 years of managerial career that suggest that he's good enough to manage an EPL club let alone sort the big big mess United are currently in.

The Ole's experiment might have worked if he had a top DOF, a top Technical director and a top CEO guiding him. They would have taken away from him complex areas of old school management like spotting new talent and persuading them to join + they would have helped him big time with the technical aspects of management as well. Unfortunately that didn't happened as well.

I feel sorry for him. In some ways he has been set to fail with us. However even if the club supported him (which they didn't) there's still question marks whether he would be good enough for us.His CV certainly doesn't support that.

You keep commenting on his time with Molde, but to me you come across as if you refuse to acknowledge the circumstances he was under during his second spell in Norway. As I mentioned they were selling themselves out of competing. They've been buying better over the years and have developed further. That is why they are competing this year.
His time at Molde during his first stint there wasn't just decent, it was as good as it gets in the Norwegian league. He got a lot of backing from the owners of Molde, but the job he did getting a "sometimes number 2, never number 1" club to win the league while playing some of the best football that has been played in modern times in Norway, in front of a strong and dominant Rosenborg was a fantastic piece of achievement.

In that year where they struggled when Ole returned during Molde being "champions" Molde got to the last 16 in Europa League. Beating the likes of Celtic, Standard Liege, Fenerbache, Sevilla and drawing against Ajax. Performing in the Europa or Champions League is also something Norwegian teams struggle with.

I think Ole is out of his depth in England, but that is no reason to downplay what he has done at Molde. The Tippeliga is so low on quality, from players to coaches, that saying that it doesn't transfer to a bigger league is enough criticism in my opinion.

Don't you think that not winning anything in 5 years despite such poor opposition speak volumes on his methods and his tactics both in terms of managing a side which may have weaknesses and in rebuilding a successful side as quickly and as efficiently as possible? I think it does tbh. He won't get 5 years to set things right with United that's for sure.

From a few years ago to him wanting to go back to Spain to him committing himself in our clubs vision is amazing. He's our best player and I'm sure this is a clear sign UTD still has that ambition and desire to get back to winning ways.
