If you don't rate him you should stop watching sports altogether.
sometimes it takes a while to come around

remember when Harry Kane started being good? a lot of people refused to acknowledge it despite a couple of 20+ goal seasons

and before anyone jumps on me, I'm not suggesting Scott will reach Kane's level

he'll obviously surpass it :)

You can quote me on it but i have a feeling he will be the scotish hero to fire them to Euro 20 next spring.

He seems to be one for the big occasion. Really like him. His performance vs Leicester was brilliant. Of course he had a few sloppy moments but his energy is something we lacked for a long time. Is also think he has the right attitude inside the dressing room.

Keep it up lad!

Keep matic/Fred and give him a bit more freedom, with Pogba pushed up instead of Mata. He clearly more of a box to box player than a pure DM.

Probably the only one that looked like a footballer out there. Even Lindelof was passing into touch.

He is the definition of average. Might as well put his name as a synonym to it in the thesaurus. Cannot create, cannot score, average in the air, average strength. A completely average player. Absolutely nothing about him whatsoever.

Fred created more in 20 minutes than he created all game.

Did ok. Set up Maguire's huge chance in the 2nd half. Involved in the build-up to Mata's huge chance. Probably our best performer, which isn't saying much.

I'll be honest, I do not see anything of quality in him at all. He's just someone on the pitch who helps move the ball along.

We knew what he was going into the season. The big problem is Ole/Woodward didn't think we needed another creative spark besides Pogba.

This right here. It’s strange that everyone else thinks he had a good game. He hides from the ball which is why I hate so much. Matic gets so much criticism but he never hides. He tries to make plays even if they are slow. Mctominay however just likes to run with the ball and ball watch when opposition midfielders have the ball.

In an ideal world he's a squad player, but such is the state of our midfield where he is first choice by default.

I actually really like Scott. He is technical, physical and he has a great engine.

I just wish he was in an era where we had better midfielders for him to learn from.

He just isn't enough for us right now.

Tries his best every game but just lacks the ability to play well consistently. Was very good last week but that’s only game this season he’s played well in.

Funny thing is he's a striker (one that was always on the bench in the u23s) converted to a midfielder and is a first choice midfielder for us. He's competent enough with the basics of the game but I'm not sure he offers enough offensively or has a wide enough range of passing. He was fairly invisible today.

Like I said in the Matic thread, we can't let standards drop so low, McTominay had a couple of ok moments today and he'll always have a good attitude and plenty of energy but he's not good enough on the ball overall. We used to know a squad player when we saw one, and that's what he is if we intend to get back to the top, but truth is I am not sure the club are actually aiming for that.

Funny thing is he isn't a striker. The u23s not having a striker and having to play several players out of position doesn't make him a striker, negating the fact he's been a CM his entire life.

He's bang average at best anyway. I'd rather have Mark Noble.

He’s the least of our worries. Plays his role well. Look at the experienced shite who do nothing before this lad

He played as a number 10 early on in his career did he not?

So not striker?

Played all over the midfield just like everyone because we don't play youth players in single positions. We also often played with 2 man midfields in the lower age groups which is where he played. He's always been a CM. There are lineups posted on here and online of his time in the u14-15s and he's always in CM.

Played well today. He carries the ball and gets forward into the box to support the play.
Cant see why anyone would dig him out today. Should have had an assist as well.

Ah fair enough, my mistake. Think it's often mentioned he was used as a utility player in an offensive role and it mentions on the website that he played a lot as a 10 in the u16s but it's probably more overstated than the reality of it.

He’s not good enough but plays every game that’s a big worry. Not the only worry rather than the least of them.

Was alright, couldn’t really do much with what was in front of him. Wish we had a better midfielder next to him.

One of his bad game. Noble was a better midfielder than him today.

He was pretty much two side of a coin today equally good and bad. Needs to learn sometimes doing the simple thing is the one that will cause the most damage.

I thought he did well today. The asset of McTomminay is not his passing but his ability to drive the ball forward, good work rate, good energy, & win lot of free kick because he’s very good shielding the ball.

We have so many things that we need to worry of, upgrading McTomminay is the last thing we should do after we sort out his partner & our attack. He deserves the chance to show what he can improve.

He's a no nonsense midfielder. Would do well to establish himself as a regular starter in a top 6 team.

There is no spoon.
Amazing how the opinions on him change from week to week depending on our result. He's a solid midfielder and does what his description says he does, he needs creativity and pace alongside him, instead hes getting stick for doing a two man job in midfield.

Many midfielders at midtable teams are solid. It's not enough at top clubs.

I don't think the opinions change, some people just don't rate him and jump on any opportunity to mention it. When he plays well they pipe down for a bit.

So what do you suddenly expect McTominay to carry our midfield and be a top player all of a sudden? He has clearly played himself into the squad and the first team, the problem is not that he managed to do that but the fact we do not even have any options far better than him. He does everything he possibly can to improve and that is good enough from him. He has done pretty well so far. The club desperately need new midfielders and the fact we went into the season needing McTominay to perform like a proven top player is pretty crazy. Such a gamble from the club and it is totally unfair to put that on the boy himself.
