The Twitter era of the reactionary football fan

It's become more and more apparent to me that there is a weird new culture with football fans. I've put Twitter in the title because I don't go to games so I don't know how prevalent it is there. But for me the football fanbase on Twitter and the internet in general is the most reactionary, socially vain and morally vacuous there has ever been.

The reaction to Van Dijk's errors yesterday have led me to make this thread. We live in a world now where there are stats for absolutely everything and they can be banded about to suit pretty much any agenda. I'm sure the majority of us are aware of the stat about VVD not being dribbled past for a long period of time. My issue is now with the reaction when players like this make a mistake, or when Nicolas Pepe eventually became the first to dribble past Van Dijk.

I know we all had a massive laugh at Gerrard's slip and his red card but those were big moments. A title deciding game and his final game against us, plus that was mainly from direct rivals as well. I've just noticed people reveling in any mistake players like Van Dijk, De Bruyne, Pogba, etc.. make. It feels like everyone from every other team is just waiting ready to pounce like vultures.

If you're on Twitter it's likely you'll have seen many accounts with the same style. PulisicSZN, AubaKing, etc.. basically accounts that usually shamelessly rep a player in their profile pic and the club in general. As soon as any player from a rival team does anything poorly it is giffed and straight on Twitter with a comment like "hook this to my veins" or something along those lines. I know a lot of this is done for comedic purposes and attempting to get more followers but it's created so many copycats that it is almost a weird culture in itself now and all incidents are remembered. Players are called frauds left right and centre, Rashford is compared to Bebe one week and Ronaldo the next, etc... Pep even spoke in his press conference that he was called Fraudiola in his first season. It's actually left the internet and reached the man himself which is bizarre.

People like Nicolas Pepe are getting all sorts online and he's being compared stats-wise to Dan James for example just 5 games in. Whatever happened to giving a player a season to settle? Especially if they've come from abroad. Can you imagine the abuse Vidic and Evra would have gotten if they had their respective Utd career starts now?

Personally I find it all a bit toxic and it's worrying that it will likely just get worse. Thoughts?

Obertans #1 fan.
People don’t actually watch games. It’s that simple. They watch highlights and see Salah/De Bruyne/Messi looming amazing and then when you watch our players for ninety minutes (warts and all) you get ridiculous over the top reactions.

Players now aren’t compared with other players. They’re compared with YouTube videos and Fifa games where they score four goals a game. It’s actually mental.

Everything that happens culturally is merely a reflection of its times.

What's mad also is that the standard now is that anyone who has around 20 goals a season isn't very good

In terms of social media, mocking and making fun of people (whether through memes, gifs, and extreme opinion as long as they sound funny) always get more responses and likes. The current climate enables and encourages us to express hatred and negativity toward players rather than expressing sincere admiration and praise. You don't have to go for Twitter for that even, the Lingard and Lukaku threads here are prime examples. It doesn't even feel safe to say positive things, since you know that someone will inevitably come and try their best to downplay your favorite team/player.

It's banter, yes, but somehow these kind of digital interaction felt so much more toxic and exhausting than the old days when you just trade insults with your schoolmates....

The Mirror were calling him Flawed-iola recently, while implying that this kind of nonsense originates with football fans...which is an outright lie.

Unfortunately this is all too true. I don't do Twitter, I just see transfer tweets on here but I see facebook comments and yeah, it's full of trash and fans who don't even watch their own teams I feel. They just regurgitate crap that other trolls say.

It's banter breh, don't take it so seriously
Do you not think it filters down though? Kids get influenced by it and it could change their patience with players and the way they view the game.

What also don't help is these fan channels who think they speak on behalf of most of their fans. Fans are impatient and the moment you have difference of opinion they resort to abusing. Twitter is the worst platform to have any debate.

Who will think of the kids?!!

Seriously, you are absolutely right. It is indeed just a reflection of the times - what's why we have Trump, Boris, Modi, Bolsonaro et al. running the world (into the ground).

It's not started because of Twitter, all its done is give these people a platform.

But then again I can't blame a lot of people for not having a basic understanding of the game when the so called experts on TV who are payed to help the average punter understand football better lack said basic understanding themselves.

This is why I don't get players having twitter accounts.

It's not just football, but we live in a society where people are impatient. They want instant gratification for funny tweets or posts.

What social media has done is given people a platform. Before it was all about the players and teams, now you have fan accounts dedicated to managers, owners, and god knows what else. If you want to be an instant celeb, just have a rant and post it on YouTube.

I like to think players ignore the bile they receive in the comments or replies to tweets or whatever.

Rashford makes a tweet about how he's looking forward to the next game and there's several replies calling him shite and that he should leave. Guarantee the majority of them are just doing it for attention, but it must suck to get that kind of shit on a daily basis. Hence why I hope the players just ignore it and mainly interact with other players or the fans that actually aren't utter twats.

Also what bothers me is how these footballer repping accounts hide behind a picture of a footballer. For instance they make a shit tweet, and some person with their actual face as their profile picture calls them out on it and their reply is to simply post a picture of the other guys face. Seen it happen quite a few times and it's just pathetic.

I like Twitter for many reasons but the whole football Twitter culture is utter garbage and it's something I try to avoid as much as I can.

It’s absolute crap. I’ve actually started banning myself from tapping on tweets, so I don’t see the replies.

I don't think it has much to do with Twitter, it's just how humans are. You get the same kind of shit (over the top knee-jerking, picking out players to hate) watching a game at the stadium or in a pub and in my experience grumpy old men are often the worst at it.

Twitter in general is as good or as bad as you make it, no one is forcing you to look at the accounts of idiots, it's up to you who you follow and there definitely are a lot of worthwile posters on there.

As soon as the game is over I will go to twitter to be toxic and nasty. Write and read trash.
I need to sink into the misery with other fans :D

I agree with you but will go further. People don't watch the game, they commentate the game/highlights. It happens here as well. I've done it.

Hook this to my veins
Argh, I loathe click baity type of headings like this. Buzzfeed and Deadspin/Gawker media were the absolute worst about this and it has trickled down into the unoriginal and thoughtless masses on Twitter who think they are being cute and funny. Snark and negativity on the internet gets likes and attention, regardless if there is any truth or creativity to it. Everyone has a platform now, everyone thinks they are unique in special, whereas it's no different than any other generation where 90 % of our society is and has always been filled with unoriginal lemmings blindly following trends and culture.
