Complete waste of money. Is barely better than what we already had, if at all.

Maguire was never the guy to come in and make us watertight at the back. He is not that good defensively, his value is in an attacking team and helping to emphasize that attacking ability with his passing and bursts forward. Really the problem with the Maguire/Lindelof partnership, decent footballing wise but they will always leak a few big chances.

The defense improve with him (most because of AWB though) but ofcourse the defense didnt improve for 80 mil. He is a good player but the fee was way too high. He isnt the problem though.. put a good midfield in front of him and he will do just fine. Not world class but fine.. Just like John Stones isnt world class but just fine for City. Or whoever plays next to VVD, that player is just fine but not world class either.

Maguire is fine. Not worldclass but by far not the biggest problem of our team.

Our midfield is that shit that he's basically having to do the job of a midfielder.

Haller won so many balls against both of them today in the air, you expect that against Lindelof but a little surprising with Maguire.

Nightmare performance from Maguire. Poor defensively then wastes huge chance to score. Shocking.

Defence has been good. Sometimes you've to bow to a perfect attacking play. The problem is that we offer no attacking threat whatsoever, which allows the opposing team to attack as much as they want.

Which would be ok if they actually were helping us move forward. All I see are two players taking an eternity to play the simplest of passes.

Crazy. We've had more CB mistakes in the start of this season than even last season.

Said it from day 1, he is not a 80m worth of defender and he will never be one (he only worth 50-60m at most). Still easily better than all our other CB though (Lindelof, Jones, Rojo, Bailey, Smalling, a long list of joke defenders), he is good at passing and winning ariel duel, but his defending has never been top class and he is a slow defender, that will never change and we have to accept it.

He’s experiencing what it’s like to have a defensive shield as mobile Jabba the Hutt and a to play for a team that happily cedes possession and allows the opposition time to play.

We have? We aren't ceding too many chances.
We've conceded plenty of chances and been lucky more balls havent hit the back of the net. Glad De Gea did quite well today because if he was still in his slump like most of the rest of the time it could have been 3

Didn't think he was that bad tbh. Doesn't help that the midfield in front of him is god damn awful.

Bad? No not really. Bad shot and gave the attacker too much time and we paid for it conceding a goal. So the mistake ruined an otherwise okay performance

We've conceded chances like every other team do, but we don't concede too many. De gea haven't even faced too many shots this season either. We conceded against Palace thanks to a huge error, but our defence has been relatively good.

In no way bashing him and hopefully he can justify his fee. But the way pundits have gone on about how good he's been for us. I really don't see it. He's been okay, and Lindelof has been less than okay so far this season. But I honestly believe he's yet to be as good as Lindelof was for us last season (from roughly Jose's last month onwards). I doubt he'd be getting the praises he has if he were non british.

If there was VAR, he'd concede more penalty with the way he man-handled players in the box.

You can’t possibly say that with a straight face. Last year was the worst our defense has been in a long time.

Seemed to lose most of his aerial duels with Haller

Team defense as much as individuals though, Utd were abysmal as a team defensively, so easy to get at from front to back, hindered by a terrible work-rate team-wide. The structure is better this year, and the effort, really haven't had to do that much deep defending so far this season, it is a concern how easily teams have created chances in the few dangerous moments they have had.

You have one of the biggest aerial threats in the league from set pieces, and we've barely found him with a decent ball in 6 games.

Completely disagree. We had the exact same structure last year as the year before and the year before and in each of those two years we only conceded 29 goals which was 1st/2nd in the league. The only thing that was different was that All of our defenders(especially CB) started sucking on top of our poor injuries. This year we got better defenders so we are playing defensively better. Yes it could get better which I think it will with time, but our play isn’t comparable to last season.

Bring back Smalling, he is defensively much better, don't care about passing the ball from the back, main task for cb is to protect fracking goal ffs

Well one season had smalling
The other doesn't

So yeah comment adds up

Defensively I think we been ok this season. The issue is the midfield in front. We aren't conceding too many chances or making too many obvious mistakes

This is how I felt.

He’s a slightly above average defender who’s strengths are heading at set pieces, comfort on the ball and his distribution; beyond on the left of a back 3, I’d be seriously considering using him to anchor the midfield, where he played in his youth, and giving Tuanzebe a run at the back. The fact the general consensus at Leicester was that Jonny Evans is superior gives a good insight into how good he really is.

Wasn't his best game but still think he'll be a good signing. Could maybe have done better with his chance, or maybe that's being too harsh.

All of the defenders on that side could have done better but it was still a great goal by Yarmalenko. Funnily enough VVD was worse on the Kante goal where he went into retreat but it doesn't matter when you win.

He's been underwhelming I think. Not awful, at all, but not 85m good - but then we knew that, it's just the way things are now.

Today was his poorest game so far in my opinion.

Leicester are presumably laughing all the way to the bank.
