Mind you, two of those internationals are Fletcher and Richardson.

You also need the ability, to perform at the highest level...not in a reserve game against other kids and out of favour pros who aren't interested.

The names that have been cycled around since I've been here haven't had that...

I agree it is a massive leap for these kds to become premiership regulars especially as modern supporters have no patience, want constant success and much prefer a multi-million pound import than wait until our own players mature and improve, as we see with the vitriol that players like Fletcher and Richardson get when they do not play like seasoned pro's at 20/21--------- they are crap etc. etc.
Personally i think there is more tallent coming through than we have had for many years and is directly due to our coaches concentrating on ball skills when the players are young. Unlike many clubs we do not chose our young players because of their athleticism and strength rather than their football abilitity and we strongly disagree with most of the FA's ideas on junior football and the way it is developed, as I understand it we do not let our youngest players compete in the FA competition. Suprisingly we only had 2 clubs support our ideas one being Liverpool

Chadwick passed out in the game at the weekend, and had to be treated with oxygen to recover. He saw his own reflection in some unusually shiny boots.

And I don't believe the hype about either Richard or David Jones.

David Jones has so far proved himself at every level he has been tested at now he has his biggest test. He has been unfortunate that he has had a few knocks in the pre-season matches otherwise he might have played a lot more.
Richie Jones is younger and has much more time, IMO he will make a fine defensive midfield player but at what level who knows?

I like David Jones as a footballer and hope he makes it. He can pass, he can score. But he has this slightly Liam Miller-ish thing about him as well.

In other words, you can't help thinking all the other players think he's a bit of a pussy, and he knows it.

Stats seem to work most of the time......

Of the 450 youth players who have played in the FA Youth Cup.....

15% went on to become internationals
33% played for our first team
69% went on to play league football and have some kind of career in the game...

Only Ajax can come close and West ham have the closest 'hit rate' from other English clubs.....

I am never going to say that everyone will make it.....that's impossible.....but we still keep producing great talent.....end of story...

Anyone on here from other clubs.....get your records out and let's do some comparisons.............otherwise??????

I think many forget just what an amazing record United have had over the years at producing their own tallent. Even the side who played in the 68European Cup Final had only 3 players who had not come through our youth development and that was only 10 years after loosing a near team of young players.

How can the last 3 pages of this thread have been created because Davo stated the bleeding obvious i.e. that few if any kids from our youth/reserve teams will make it as first team regulars with United?

Whatever anybody thinks Davo is right. I've been watching youth coming through since the fifties and it's always been the same, only 1 or 2 usually make it. The number of times in the sixties we saw 'the new Duncan Edwards' or 'the new Tommy Taylor', kids who ended up playing in the 3rd division or lower. I remeber Busby raving about a kid who had great skill but he was the sort who would take on the whole of the opposition then run the ball into touch, he was soon shipped out. Yes, it could happen that these kids will all make it but don't hold your breath because a lot won't be there in a couple of years time and people will have forgotten them and be raving about the new batch.

I am not sure of the age group ----- under 11's or close to, I think they play 6 a-side and we think it is too many and does not allow skills to develope

OK.......

Once every decade United have a team where most of the players make it......

1950's.....Edwards, Colman, Charlton etc
1960's.....Rimmer, Best, Fitzpatrick, Aston, Sadler etc
1970's.....Nicholl, Albiston, McIlroy, McCreery....
1980's......Whiteside, Hughes, Hogg, Garton, Blackmore etc
1990's.....Neville, Giggs and so on
2000's.....Jones, Richardson, Bardsley, Steele, McShane

during the other years we have a hit-rate of 1-2 players making the grade.

This is totally normal!

Some of the players can't get through so go to impressive careers at other clubs......Giles, Platt, Bosnich, Givens, Gillespie, Pears, Walsh, Hill, Savage and so on...

While others might hit the heady heights....but we have taught them how to be professional footballers and they have made a career out of the game...there are too many too mention but the likes of Healy, Higginbotham, Curtis, Heckinbottom, Brebner, Cooke etc..

Let's assume that ELEVEN FANTASTIC PLAYERS make it through one season.....they will probably have ten years at the top.....so it's impossible for anyone else to come through and take their place.....you can't stop your youth policy.....or say it doesn't work......because there isn't a Ryan Giigs coming through every year....if there was....every club would have one!

What you hope to do is bring 2-3 players through each year and give some others a try.........

At United we have a history of giving kids a chance...that's all! Many of those kids go on to great things at our club because we give them a chance. It is right that we should talk about them, get excited about them because history tells us that some of them might make it........

At most other clubs.....Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool et al......they don't put as much focus on it......and therefore have to use a buying policy......which is why Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea do not consistently produce good kids and only have token youth players in their sides....shit even Manchester City has a better Youth Policy than those mentioned.........

So support the kids.....give them encouragement.....and that includes O'Shea and Fletcher.........and our investment will always be repaid.....

People respond best from support.......particularly youngsters....

Couldn't agree more mate. Its always been a part of our history and will continue to be. I can't understand how anyone would not see this as a massive plus. Amongst our greatest ever players and some of the finest to have ever played the game have come through our own ranks. No other clubs have consistently produced the level of footballer and the amount of internations that we have. Edwards, Charlton, Best, Whiteside, Hughes, Beckham, Giggs, Scholes, Butt, Neville etc. No one else can even get close to our record and every fan should be proud of.

Richardson looks to have ability though. he doesn't deserve the stick he gets. He hasn't played enough to warrant it.
