That is bs, if the club was actually shrewd in market like actually doing some good scouting to buy a good player before they board the hype train, signing players with low release clauses and almost out of contract in either the summer or January when they will be available for free, even in this janauary window there are two or players that would at the very least gives us quality in squad depth to easily match the likes of liverpool or spurs.

You dont need 700 million to build a great side if you have great scouting system and manager. But he is right in that with people like Ed and Ole at the helm, you just have to sign as many great players as possible to succeed despite them, not because of them.

I find this idea that because of covid19 it will suddenly be unethical for football clubs to be spending hundreds of millions on football players pretty repulsive. What kind of egalitarian utopia did guys like Merton think they were living in before the virus? In the UK in 2019 there were more than 280,000 people living on the streets (by the official estimate - it is widely acknowledged that the real number is likely to be as much as two or three times that.) In 2017/18 12.5m people were living below the poverty line in the UK - 19% of the population. But now huge transfer fees are unacceptable?
The minute people start listening to guys like Merson, the world really is in trouble.

In relative terms you are correct but Spurs are a member of the 'big 6' and have the fewest trophies accumulated. Spurs want to be treated like the big club they claim to be, they should have their success measured like all the other members of that group. A top 4 finish shouldn't be viewed as a success for any team it should be viewed as a platform to help elevate teams to attain success. Sheffield United and Leicester are outliers and this should be seen as a relative success for them but Spurs have been here for 5/6 years consistently and have nothing to show for it and they should be measured on that notion.

Exactly. There plenty of positions that are nearly solid now. Even the midfield with fred and mctominay. Add 1 or 2 more, surely united can definitely push further. Ole did a great job so far with how limited the squad is.

I completely agree with you. I’d also add the accolades Pochettino routinely receives for this ‘success’.
If you look at the peak of that Spurs squad it had several World Class players in their prime. I think they underachieved personally.
The season Leicester won the league and the season United were second were actually a bit embarrassing for this ‘amazing’ manager.
