A British family of seven - including a three-month old baby and two-year-old twin girls - has been detained by US immigration authorities for nearly two weeks after the family inadvertently crossed the Canadian border into unmarked US territory.

The Connors family was vacationing in the Canadian province of British Columbia on October 2, driving close to the US border when they "Made a very brief detour on an unmarked road to avoid an animal," they said.

CBP said agents soon discovered that two of the adults in the family were previously denied travel authorization to enter the US. CBP said agents attempted to return the family to Canada and the United Kingdom, but "Canada refused to allow their return and two attempts to contact the consulate for the United Kingdom were unsuccessful."
Hmmm

A take from the US media (From the washington Post)

https://www.washingtonpost.com/nati...onnors-british-family-ice-vacation-detention/

U.S. Customs and Border Protection said Tuesday that the British family was arrested for making what U.S. agents believe was a deliberate attempt to enter the United States illegally from Canada.

U.S. officials say British family illegally crossed border from Canada on purpose

U.S. authorities disputed the family’s version of events, saying they were spotted via video surveillance “slowly and deliberately driving through a ditch onto Boundary Road in Lynden, Washington” between parallel roadways on the U.S. and Canadian sides. The roads are not connected by cross streets, and the only legal way to traverse between the countries is at staffed border stations throughout the region.
In a statement, CBP said U.S. agents also determined that two of the family members had applied for travel authorization to visit the United States and were denied. A senior CBP official said the Connorses applied for visa waivers last year, and it was not immediately clear why they were rejected. The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe the case, said the family — four adults and three small children — were in possession of $16,000 in cash at the time of their arrest.

Now that I find odd....the $16,000 I mean.
im not sure what to make of it to be honest - but if its $US or $canadian would probably be of significance - I know a few places in Canada accept US dollars but it would seem strange to bring that much in US dollars unless you had planned to visit the USA

edit

nside the car, agents found $16,600 in Canadian cash,
https://www.inquirer.com/news/berks-british-immigration-canadian-border-20191015.html

that does not sound too excessive to me for 7 people on a holiday - admittedly id just use my card but some people do take travel money in cash and it is in canadian $ not US

I was initially surprised at the notion that one might take a wrong turn in southern Canada and accidentally end up in the US.
It happens a fair bit. Probably due to people being on the sightseeing tip and not paying attention to the signs.

 but seriously, what happens is you take a wrong turn and you end up on a road that only goes to the border crossing. If you try to turn around you'll be detained. If you didn't mean to go that way and aren't prepared to cross (passports, visas, etc.) you'll be detained.

ICE detained my aunt at the Windsor/Detroit border for 6 hours for having her car broken into and passport stolen (she's a US citizen). She's 60 something and they acted as if she was some crime kingpin selling passports.

US border guards can be like that for sure.

I sometimes travel through the US to see my family in western Canada. Once, on my way back to Toronto, crossing back into the the US the guard looks at my passport and asks me what I do for a living. I reply and he says that must require a real attention to detail. I say, yes sometimes. To which he responds, so why isn't your passport signed?

He was kind enough to let me sign it right then and there.

That's kinda hilarious.

Ah yeah sure they can be like that too. I once spilled shampoo / hair gel all over my passport (it was in a terrible state) and when I handed it over the lady started screaming "Patrick your passport is crying" and waived me through.

That was before Trump and anyone gave a feck about ICE though.

Happened to me on Niagara. I realized I've taken the wrong direction but I think it was on a bridge and I had no way to take a turn. I proceeded to drive till the checkpoint and told the officer and I was allowed to turn and come back. But this was in 2007 when ice was not hated. They were even courteous

Yeah, it's especially difficult in southern Ontario because all of the crossings are bridges. And back then they were generally pretty nice alright.

It’s just my opinion not something I’ve read.
Their surname is very common amongst UK and Irish travelers and having seen a picture of the family I’m putting 2+2 together and maybe hitting 4..
As soon as I saw their photos something struck me about them but I couldn’t work out what it was. As soon as you wrote that it clicked with me. That plus the use of cash does = 4 to me anyway.

i suspect they gave a warm traveler welcome to the police when they were stopped then... My experience of American Immigration officials does make me wonder how well they would have responded to that
What’s a ‘warm traveler welcome?’

I see ICE keeps being mentioned but ICE has little or no presence at the border. It's all CBP - perhaps some military presence but CBP and not ICE would handle the security at the border as part of USCIS.

From the latest info of them being denied entry to the US recently, crossing a ditch then heading for the US it sounds like they knew what they were doing.

Robbing you without physically assaulting you I'd imagine. Or is the blood what makes it warm?

As for these lot, they were trying to illegally get into the States and have been rightfully stopped. Wouldn't be a surprise if they are tinkers, never much for following laws those lot.
