Despite that I thought it was a pretty quiet game from him, rarely had to stretch himself. Utd were well set up as a team defensively, the back 3 received excellent protection and Liverpool only really started to penetrate between the lines with Lallana and Keita on.

My concern with Maguire was that if we played an expansive game he would be exposed with his lack of mobility and pace. Sit deep and counter and you avoid that.

I still can't believe people said his transfer was unnecessary. I'm glad we paid whatever it took to get him.
Maguire was man of the match!
But the baby sitting part is ironic as that is the only weakness I see with him: he doesn’t always cover so well for his partners.
Ha, fair enough!
Injured in warm up.
That was a shame, yeah. Hopefully, when fit, Tuanzebe gets a run of games next to him.

Rojo had my heart beating fast whenever the ball was near him..:) I was waiting for one of his kamikaze plays

Having him, Lindelof and Young all together in one back line is not good for the heart!

"It might be silly to say it but he won’t hear it anyway."

5 star logic that.

‘punditry’ is honestly at joke at this point. We get it Rafael, you don’t rate Maguire - it’s a game of opinions but honestly an ex-pro saying this about a seasoned international is beyond ridiculous.

All the ex-pros that were spanked by United at some point in their career all seem to have an awful lot to say about our team.

He was really poor tonight I thought. Again, we’re asking our defenders to play behind non-existent midfields, but he look unsophisticated tonight. A number of times he got nowhere near the attacker to block the shot. We’ve got bigger concerns, but he’s not the final piece in our defence or anything.

Man he was so easily turned by that Guinean player (Souma?) in the second half. Otherwise he was pretty good and assured in defense.

He was fine. Looked assured and confident. Apart from being turned once, had no problems. That header clearance at end was exactly what was needed. Compare him to Jones who looked like at any point in first half was going to give ball away or drop a clanger.

The night started off with him not being there for the captain's responsibility at the start of the match at the coin toss. The officials had to keep shouting "Maguire" to get him to come over and work towards starting the game

That summed his night up. Not impressive

He's not looking as confident as he was at the start of the season, same with AWB. Not doing really bad but i don't know, i expect a bit more.

Hopefully, I'm wrong in that he is nothing special, he will not continue these mediocre performances but struggles with small, mobile technical players unless protected by midfield or in a compressed defence.

It seems to be the same with all our players, just seem to be on the decline.

He wasn’t bad tonight but we were expecting some like Maguire to give us an extra 10% when he joined, not be pulled down to the level of our other players.

Definitely need more from him in the future.

Maguire is an improvement in defence but the problem will always be that he was never a £85m improvement, more worth half that. I know United have a lot of money to spend but it's that kind of wastage that is symptomatic of the club's decline.

When you look at the deficiencies in the rest of the squad, there's little reason why United spent £135m on Wan-Bissaka and Maguire, it's like being given £135 to buy a new set of clothes in the shop and buying a pretty good jacket and a nice jumper but your shoes are falling apart.

While the midfield is so poor, United will continue to give up chances and he'll concede goals and they won't score enough to cover for that. And he's not a generational defender that will lift a team out of that kind of situation.

He was never worth the £80mil investment.

We’ve tried to sign our VvD before we’ve got our Firmino > Mane > Salah

He’s a damn good CB but we were in no position to spend £80mil on a ‘good CB’, he’s not a generational talent & I can’t see a stand out quality in his game that he is peerless at.

He’ll be a good CB for us but I thought at the time funds should have been used elsewhere & still do. We should be looking for the next Maguire not overspending because our rivals got a generational CB a few windows before.

Did this guy improve any aspect of our defence at all? I know the defensive stats from last year has been improved (not that hard TBH) but that's more down to the more conservative playing style and last year being an exception to the rule as Jose was at war with CEO and some players. Because other than last year, we had the best (or on par) or second best defensive record in the league in the last 5 years starting with LVG in 14-15 season.

All the money spent on defence and we still give too many chances away to be considered as a team that has good defence. Is playing from the back much better than last seasons as well? Don't think so. Paying £80m for Maguire was not a smart investment. We should have invest that money on our midfield or attack.

One of the advantages of a back 3 is that the right and let centre backs can venture forward which Maguire excels at. Ole should play him there not in the middle.

I'd be surprised if Maguire wouldn't be playing left-sided centre back with Tuanzebe fit. That's the tactical setup that would make most sense, he's quick and can cover both Lindelof and Maguire, who are both decent helping the build up.

Didn't watch the game tonight but I think he's well overrated. Not bad by any means but I don't notice any improvement in our defence with him in it over Smalling.
He's been decent since he's come in. Looked great against Chelsea and decent since then. The defence looks much better equipped to play out from the back than it did before. Smalling in that sense was an absolute liability.

Getting slower as the season goes on and not as assured as in earlier games. Playing alongside Jones etc doesn't help but I would expect a lot more. Where's the ball playing skills he's said to have? I thought at least with his height we might nick the occasional goal from a corner but absolutely nothings happening there. Smalling was the same, never offered anything when he should have been a real threat. In Maguire's one aerial dual with van dyke the other day he was well beaten..

And yet Roma have the same 3 goals in 5 matches we do since Smalling joined. But with a better defensive record this season

BBC had him MOTM. Caf say he shite
I'm a huge fan and have defended him a lot in regards to the amount we spent on him, but even I have to admit he was poor last night.

I think he's been great to very good in all of his other games so far, but I think the occasion may have got to him tonight. His first European game and captaining Manchester United for the first time, whilst playing in a hostile atmosphere on a seemingly slippy pitch.

Hopefully that's all it was and he gets back to his usual self on Sunday.

Some idiotic posts here. He was fine and least of the problems. I like the way he wins the ball and picks out a pass .Lost 1 or 2 duels but hardly anything to be concerned about.
