Gomez next to VvD was as unsurpassable as VvD himself. But he is practically nearly always injured. And then comes back not so good (was dreadful in his last appearance, shockingly awful). As a result if Lovren is chosen ahead of you then you've got to hear the alarm bells.

He won't be what Arsenal, Spurs or Utd fans are hoping. He could be but injuries will stop him in his tracks constantly. For us he will have time to regain his form and could well become as good VvD again, for a short while at least.

He was never as good as VVD ffs. I actually rate the kid, think he can be immense if things fell in place for him but trust you to come up with ridiculously over the top cringe praise.

If he can keep himself fit, he's a lovely player to watch. He has all the right attributes as a centre half, is strong, has great speed on him and best of all, technically he is very good. Thankfully he is still young and has years ahead of him but if he can keep fit and stay focused, he will be an excellent defender. More teams are looking to play out from the back and he's extremely good at passing the ball into a midfielder's feet which is a dream in terms of transition of play.

I know some fans are fustrated with his poor form as of late but please, give him time. I remember watching him live against Brazil and he was excellent! Just needs some game time and i imagine he'll start against Arsenal mid-week. Could be the right match for him in terms of confidence if he can help keep a clean sheet against the likes of Laca, Auba and Pepe.

For the few months we were in defensive heaven, and obviously I watched us quite a bit on TV, he was as good for me. I don't usually praise our defenders too often and generally Gomez worries me so I'm not throwing unnecessary praise around. If offered a chance of getting Soyuncu I'd be willing to sell Gomez. I just don't think Gomez will stay fit enough for long enough (call it my Sturridge itis).

Conceded 8 goals in his last 35 league games. Like a little dijk junior, actually holding his own next to VVD. Definitely the best defender England has.

That’s a ridiculous stat, him and VVD together seem to have some sort of weird effect. I don’t think Matip is any worse individually. Good set of defenders at the minute

If Matip can play like he did vs Shrewsbury without VVD, I'll wait from making claims about Gomez until he has kept a few clean sheets next to Lovren.

Is it? Hardly a plethora of quality in that position. A few lads doing well in struggling sides.
All England's CB's are flawed so its not outrageous. I think him and Maguire compliment each other too so England will be hoping for that combo in the Euros.
I mean, he's playing for the best team in the league, beside the best defender in the world. He's definitely in the mix, but to categorically state he's the best is going a bit far for me.

Don't think there's much debate there based on this season's performances. Notwithstanding the influence Van Dijk on those around him, Gomez has all the tools you'd expect in an elite modern centre-half.

In a world of my own. People know me here.
Hmmmm, I never considered that.
I don't think it affected Gomez too much as he was starting to come good anyway after a lengthy lay-off. But I think Raheem, for all his qualities, has something of a problem when he's put into a pressure situation. This obviously was of his own making & I think he knows that. England, & City, will be hoping he comes out of it before the summer & the Euro's.

Something has knocked Sterling of course for sure.

If he playing for a lower placed side people would use the opposite argument.

I don't think Gomez would look as good without Van Dijk next to him. It'll be interesting to see who Southgate goes with. Maybe a back three of Maguire, Stones & Gomez will be his preferred option with WB's ahead of them.

He played in a couple of the games we played reserves/youth team in, not next to VVD - looked jittery at first (coming back from injury) but then was superb.

Before Gomez began to play regularly this season we couldn't buy a clean sheet.

Even van dijk struggles with clean sheets next to Lovren.

Kept a clean sheet against a full strength Everton side surrounded by kids Philips, Williams and Larouci (unsurprisingly he stood out miles as the best defender on the day) though.

Since December 7th, when he began to start games again, he's conceded 2 goals in 12 games in all competitions. And one of those goals was with Jordan Henderson as his centreback partner. The other was against wolves last week.

We had failed to keep a clean sheet for 13 consecutive games prior to his return to the starting line up.

This season LFC had 2 cleansheets from 15 games before Gomez entered the starting lineup. Since he began starting games LFC has 8 cleansheets in 9 games.

Last season Gomez started 12 of the 15 first games for LFC, 7 cleansheets and 1 where he was injured in the 23rd minute without conceding. The rest of the season LFC got 12 cleansheets from 23 games.

In total since the start of last season Gomez has started 21 league games and LFC has conceded 5 goals with him on the pitch and recorded 15 cleansheets in those games.

Joe Gomez: Liverpool defender suffers injury during England training
Joe Gomez was a first-team regular for Liverpool last season as Jurgen Klopp's side ended the club's 30-year wait for a Premier League title; Liverpool are already without central defender Virgil van Dijk

Reminds me of the days we had to play Carrick, Evra and Fletcher in central defence.

Blackburn at home/Fulham away anyone?

Klopp would prove himself a genuine miracle worker if he wins anything major this season.

Unless, hopefully, we pull another VVD and get a world class centre-back on the 1st January.

I dont think a broken leg would be called a "potential serious injury"

If it is a broken leg, then its a weird choice of words.
