I wanted us to sign Strootman a few years back. He went to Roma instead, thank feck!
That's a bit unfair on him, I think. He was playing well for Roma but then went of two have two knee injuries. Wrecked his career.

Unfortunately we didn't avoid him, but at the time I thought Morgan Schneiderlin was the midfielder we'd needed for years, and was shitting it that Arsenal would get him as I thought he'd fix their midfield too.

He was ace at Southampton, rock solid from the moment they got promoted, but he was just invisible here. A totally bizarre regression that he never came back from.

More on topic, I was sure Kondogbia was exactly what we needed too, yet it was based purely on hype and a few highlights. He was linked with all the top clubs in summer 2013. Where is he now?

Plays at Valencia and scored a cracking goal in the CL recently.

Ousmane dembele isnt even 23 and you're already writing him off. I would still take him with open arms if he ever becomes available. He is questionable though with injuries and professionalism.

Dont forget the biggest culprit in renato sanchez. I remember before joining the cafe I would read from multiple posters how he is the next best thing after messi. Its also quite hilarious how things are going downhill for the lad after he spoke negatively of us shortely after his move to bayern.

Renato Sanches maybe? I don’t know how he’s doing at the moment though, I just recall there being a bit of a meltdown on here when we didn’t sign him.
What I remember the most about him was a lot of posters identifying his weak basic technique, passing and decision making. I thought he looked promising, but I think a lot of posters should get credit for their negative attitude towards him before he joined Bayern.

I love how there's always a few players that get repeated enough they become that season's hyped up wants. It always moves on to someone else then no one wants the old ones because they're not exciting anymore. Either that or they're a bit shit.

If Scholes was a Blackburn player in 95 and we bought him, this place would of said he was shite for 4 years, loved him for 2, then said he was shite again till 2008 until the barca crowd said they studied him every day.

If you doubt me just look at the Carrick treads.

Only conclusion I can reach, is that people with an internet connection doesn't necessarily mean football intelligence. SHOCKER

I was fully on board the Schneiderlin hype train too. Ah, the days of wanking over the 'Schmidfield'.

There were a number of people up in arms we didn’t sign Aurier a couple of years ago. Based off You Tube videos he still managed to look shite in.

I was desperate for us to sign Müller when we were linked to him under LvG. I thought his attacking instincts were the missing piece of the puzzle that would put an end to the tumescent, limp-dicked football we played. He had one meteoric season after that, but now he's nothing like the player he used to be. Combine his rapid decline with our lack of success with signings in recent years and it would definitely not have worked out. He'd most likely have gone back to Germany by now for a pittance.

Van Gaal era had a few like Ron Vlaar:lol: Even Janmaat for at bit.
John Stones. Done alright for City but would have been labeled a flop had he come here.
Malcolm, Pepe, Vermaelen perhaps.

I agree it's a good thread.

Every now and then we are linked with a player, sometimes on the basis of little and it causes a real frenzy on the caf. Posters talk with righteousness and certainty that the club are absolutely mad or clueless to not be signing a certain player. Latest efforts seem to be Haaland and Bruno fernandes. Countless times these players have been flops, or clearly not what we needed. And nobody ever mentions just how wrong they were. Same could be said for managers linked with us.

Anyway, since we enjoy giving the club a battering for their rubbish signings, let's turn the mirror on ourselves. I'll add to the list with suggestions that fit the bill

Feast your eyes on what might have happened had random caf guys been in charge of transfers

Redcafes dreadful signings list

Ousmane Dembele
Freddy Adu (vintage feel)
Declan Rice (maybe premature)
Arturo Vidal - when right on the cusp of decline
Jack Wilshere - Phil Jones and luke Shaw injury list multiplied by ten
Tom 'QB' Huddlestone
Jack Rodwell
Timoue Bakayoko
Alvaro Morata
Mario Gotze
Eric Dier
James Mccarthy
Nicolas Otamendi
No fabled legendarg wesley snidjer?

its Rodwell. I heard the hype then watched him closely. He was worse than cloggers from Burnely and Derby amd other championship teams newly promoted.

Dembele is still a good player, just doesn't suit the practicalities of a Barcelona team. Been unlucky with injuries too.

Plenty of people really wanted him, a transfer thread for a kid moving to bayern getting to 31 pages says it all.:p
A good amount of people didn't mind us not getting him, but no player will be 100% backed with so many posters.

Mourinho wanted him too. I dont know about Messi, but his emergence was compared with Ronaldo beacuse they both shone in an international tournament at a young age.

https://www.sportsjoe.ie/football/j...er-united-failed-to-sign-renato-sanches-89985

"I arrived late," Mourinho told Sport TV. "I signed in May, we started talking a week before, but completely out of the process. If I had arrived earlier, I’d fight for him.

“Manchester United watched Renato many times and maybe I did it even more. In so much time at home, I watched many Benfica and Portuguese league games, I got to know the boy better with time.

To be fair it was instead of Matic, so it would’ve been a better signing.

I wonder if Sneijder counts? I can’t remember at what stage it went into overdrive here.

edit: wasn’t otamendi another one?
To be even more fair the number 1 target for the caf in that position was Fabinho, Matic was last

Lots of peeps didn't rate Pulisic here before the move to Chelsea.
I was one of them admittedly. That was because I watched him a lot at Dortmund and he was very poor. That said, we all seem to suffer from extreme recency bias here, case in point is your post because you imply that he's made it off a run of form of about 6 games.

I was going to ask if the caf even existed when Freddy Adu was a teenager but then I googled him and he's... 30?! How the feck?
Freddy Adu was hot sh*t when he was 13, so it's been 17 years :D

People used to batter Carrick on here, you just can’t take this place seriously at times.

It's much easier in hindsight about which players were good and which were not.
All these we missed out on, Mane, Frimino, Bale, Ramsey, whose to say they would have been a success at Utd under our Management (Moyes, LVG, Mourhino) and they players we signed Di Maria, Depay, Schenerdlin may have been better had we still had Fergie. Very hard to simplify.
(By the way, the players I've mentioned were just examples of names that came into my head, so don't start analysing too much about each individual)
