So Greenwood is currently better than Rashford and James?
Im not saying he's all around better, but I do assume that he'll peak faster and higher than any of Rashford and James. My point including him in that bracket is that he's a player that can add spark to any team any given time. Put him in a Real Madrid or Barcelona bench, and give him minutes in hard to break games, he will shine. He's a top top talent and to be honest, not Rashford or James could do as well in given situation. If you ask me who I would add to my, say, Barcelona team, definitely would go for Greenwood over all the rest bar Martial or Pogba

Btw, James, sure a hardworking, fast paced, high spirited player, but apart from that I doubt he's wc material.

Martial when he cares.
DDG if he can step up.
Pogba when he things goes his way.
Maguire at times.
Wall Bissaka is a beast.
James already showing what championship players can do compared to our first teamer this season.
Rashford greenwood and mctom, maybe or maybe not.
The rest won't get into top 10 side. (Plus minus)

Are we supposed to take into account possible improvement from these players or just assume they'll be the same as they are now?

Cause if that's the case Rashford and Martial don't cut it, they're talented young players but you're not competing on all front with them in their current state, just compare them to Liverpool's front three

The rest are in a top 10 side and most of them are young

Honestly i think the bulk of the players are good. We need a couple things to happen

1) ole or another manager that can instill a strong footballing identify that players can see and plug themselves into.

2) a few IG queens such as lingard does have to go. Need to build a culture of football first in the minds of the players.

Good enough?

From First Team to "Squad" to "Reserve",

Definitely - De Gea and Pogba
Good - Martial and Rashford
Good Potential - Wall
Okay (for now) - Maguire
----------
Very useful - McSauce, James, Romero
Useful - Lindelof
----------
Need to do better (have certain useful talents and slight age advantage) - Pereira and Fred
Useful sometimes - Young, Rojo
----------
No doubting talents but seriously... - Shaw, Bailly, Dalot
Nice Potential - Greenwood, Williams, Henderson, Tuanzebe

Certainly should be good enough to be part of an ideally challenging team in 2 years

De Gea
Wan Bissaka
Maguire
Rashford

Could very likely be good enough depending on injuries and progress

James
Martial
Tuanzebe
Mctominay

Hopefully part of a successful squad

Greenwood
Williams

Overall there's plenty to be optimistic about in terms of how squad repair is going. First manager post fergie to claim this I think

(I no longer see pogba as a United player when having any discussion about the future)
Same for me, but I think Lindelof can be part of a successful squad as our 3rd CB as long as the 4th CB is someone better in the air for a tricky game or two.

The disrespect shown to Dan James from some people on here is infuriating.
Are you still stuck in July?
James looks as our best signing so far without question and it is hard not to like what we see so far but as i understand we are talking here about first 11. He is only playing highest level football for two months and it is hard to say that he is top solution for right wing and nailed starter there.
If you say that he is then by some logic, Rashford and Martial are also in that first 11 because they are ( still) better than James so if we go further then you both think that we don't need Sancho(or any other top class right winger)? So Rashford- Martial- James attack is good enough for title challenge?

If we are talking about first 11 of course( or i didn't understand this thread:lol:).

I didn't talk about James as first choice player after 3-4 years. My reply was to this point.

He is more than just hard working, fast paced player. His technical ability is very underrated, he looks very good dribbler and has good shot from distance. His crossing has been very good too.

Anyways it's never binary when it comes to thread like this. Wonder how many people thought Henderson was good enough to play 2 CL finals in a row midfielder when he was meme material under Dalglish. Same with players like Salah who was on Serie A tour, loaned out for few seasons.

You don't need 11 world class players to make a great team. Still need your work horses and outstanding professionals. Just gotta get the balance right and a few players of real quality in a few key positions and youre away.

Give peas a chance.
That Dan James is underrated here makes me like him even more. If he cost £50million and was born in Malaga people would be waxing lyrical about this lad.

Of our current squad I'd say the following are good enough to build a top draw, title winning side around:

DDG
AWB
Maguire
Dan James
Pogba

Close calls depending on a bit more improvement:

Rashford
Martial
McT

Martial
Rashford Attacking Mid Right Mid
Pogba McTominay
Left Back Maguire Tuanzebe Wan-Bissaka
De Gea
This kinda risks falling into the Liverpool trap of "next year is our year" and thinking the majority of our players are top notch despite us never mounting a title challenge.

I wouldn't like to say to be honest, maybe your list is bang on, or maybe we realise Martial, Tuanzebe, McTom etc. whilst being very good just can't make the leap to top notch.

There is only way to answer the OP question really, and @Untd55 has done that.

How can you put James above Martial and Rashford when they have both out performed him?

I'm judging them on different positions matey. Neither Rashford nor Martial are quite there yet as our main striker and I prefer DJ on the wing. I think DJ can play on the wing in a top side.

Ultimately thy are al playing as part of the same front 3 and while James has been fantastic and impressed more than expected, our attack is still largely being carried by Martial and Rashford who look the most likely to score and/of complete some magic.

Yeah I agree in part but as per the thread, if I was only keeping a core of the current players I am just saying I would upgrade on Rashford and Martial before DJ as I would be looking to improve our central / in and around the box goal threat while DJ's speed and directness on either the left or right is something I'd look to keep. Just my opinion.

Tell me the "top side" that Dan James starts for? He's not replacing Salah or Mane at Liverpool. He's not replacing Sterling or Silva at City; in fact, he wouldn't even make City's bench considering they have Mahrez, Sane and Jesus on the bench when healthy and KDB and David Silva can play wide as well. Barca? PSG? Not shitting on Dan James - he's had a very good season and was a steal of a deal at 15 million - but people need to take a deep breath with this guy because some of the hyperbole is getting over the top. Nani didn't even start for our top teams. Tevez and Berbatov were often on the bench. Again, I like Dan James, he's impressed me, but I'm not convinced after 2 months that he starts for a top side.

I'm not saying he'd displace any of those players in their teams, nor am I saying he's an absolute world beater, just that he could play in a top utd side is all.

Not at all, in fact I have seen every match of the season. Im not saying that as empty comments, it's what I've seen. Dan James has been really good for us and I actually appreciate a lot his efforts and rate his displays.

He is in fact getting better and I do believe he can improve a lot. But to be honest i dont agree with the bolded part, I dont see what you call good dribbling and shot from distance. Hopefuly one day he gets better on that aspect too.

Getting past players with ball under control, I agree his shooting from distance isn't good, it's decent. I sort of exaggerated it. What I don't agree with your general point is, you make him look like a speed merchant with good pace when his technical ability is good too.

DDG - Providing his level doesn't drop off significantly in 3 years’ time he could still be our keeper for a couple of years still, just like VDS. Considering we are apparently "trying" to build a young team, the experience of DDG could be vital.

AWB - What a signing he has been and he is only 21! He is only going to get better and in my view, providing AWB stays injury free, our RB spot is sorted for the next 7-8 years, or hopefully a decade, at least.

Maguire - Hasn't been exceptional so far but you can see the quality is there. Think he will eventually settle in to be a key player of our defence for the next couple of years. At this moment in time, he is probably the most suitable captain for our club.

Pogba – This is based on ‘if’ Pogba is to be here in 3 years’ time. He is in my opinion our best player and our most creative player, something we desperately lack when he is not playing in the team. Yes the consistency is not there with him but if in 3 years we have a team with at least 3-4 other world class players and a squad challenging for major honours, we won’t be so reliant on Pogba on his off-days.

Martial – Maybe a bit biased on this as he is my favourite player at the club. Think as a centre forward he is exceptional and suits the way Ole wants to play (or I believe the way Ole wants to play :D) . He holds the ball up well and is able to bring others into play. Got pace and is a very good finisher, which due to his age will hopefully only get better. I think his creativity is very underrated by others and he also seems to get the best out of Rashford as well. I think him constantly being in and out of the team, being played on the left and due to several injuries we have yet to see him through the middle for a long spell to truly judge if he would be good enough there in the long-term. He needs to show he can become a regular 25-30 goal a season striker – minimum if we are to be challenging for trophies. He has also recently signed a new long-term contract and in my view we should look to try and develop him into a world-class centre forward, which I believe he can become has he has world-class attributes but he just needs to show it on a regular basis.

Other maybes: Due to the age and not seeing enough of them for longer spells, I am not 100% sure on the below but definitely have the potential to be regular starters in 3 years:

- Williams – Looks like a gem of a player and a true warrior! In my opinion, he should be given the number 1 LB spot immediately and just let him blossom and make the spot his for the next decade!

- Tuanzebe – My ideal CB partner for Maguire as I think his athleticism complements Maguire well. Shame he got that injury when I felt he was close to cementing the other CB spot ahead of Lindelof. Need to see Axel play a run of games in the league to really see if he is good enough in the long-term.

- Garner – Need to see him play more often in the first team to see if he can make the step-up. Should be starting in all our remaining Europa League games.

- Gomes - Believe his is currently injured but he should have been given more of a chance by now to show his worth in the number 10 position. His touch and passing ability from what I have seen of him in certain youth games is amazing but I'm starting to worry that he may not ever make it at this club for some reason, whether it's due to his size (which I believe isn’t relevant) or something else.

- Greenwood - Massive fan of Greenwood and thought he would have played more games in the league by this stage since we did not sign a striker. Clearly a brilliant finisher but in the modern game you need more than that and I have not seen enough of him to say if he will be a good enough all round striker as of yet. Definitely needs more minutes to show his worth.

- James - Brilliant start to his United career. Still think in the long-term he would be a brilliant squad player coming off the bench but who knows? Especially if he keeps up this trajectory.

- Rashford - Putting Rashford on this list even though we have seen him play significantly more compared to the above 6 names but Rashford is a player who I am a big fan off but still not 100% sure if he is someone who would be a regular starter in a title winning squad. However, the quality is clearly there and has a lot of the raw attributes and if he can improve his decision-making and finishing, he can be up there with the very best wide forwards in the world in my opinion. Probably in the form of his life right now and if he can build on this form and continue it for the next few months I will then be confident in trying to build a title winning squad with him in the starting 11.

I'm not sure what planet you're on to be honest.
Just wait and see. There will be No Martial or James in 2022. Martial is not and never will be a prolific CF. James is a trier but cannot dribble. There will be new players coming in their places. I'm not on a different planet, mate.

The entire back five potentially is good enough. Shaw and Lindelof are questionable but if they reach their potential they'll be good enough, Tanzuebe potentially as well. If I had to guess though Shaw won't be starting in a couple years time. I think between Tanzuebe and Lindelof we'll be fine.

Pogba obviously. Mctominay if he keeps developing. Fred and Periera should only ever be backup so they'll need improving.

Martial if he manages to stay fit. Rashford and James if they keep developing.

I honestly don't think we're in as bad of shape as people act. We've had a lot of injuries and we have no depth. Best case scenario we could be looking at 9-10 players now still be in the starting 11.

Worst case scenario I think we could potentially need another left back, center mid, winger, striker.

You've also got the youngsters. I'd imagine Greenwood and potentially Williams and Garner will be around in a couple of years as well but it's impossible to say how much they'll be able to step up.

Exactly. A time when we had high standards and strived to better ourselves even when we were ahead of the pack. Remember when we could bring a game-changer like fecking Nani or Berbatov off the bench?! It feels like 20yrs ago. Now we bring on players like fecking Lingard earning 100k+ a week without a single goal in 12months if we 'need something different'.

The cold, hard facts are that if we had owners like City about 50% of our starting 11 would be firmly cemented as squad players to feature in the domestic cups and off the bench. If this squad was transplanted back to SAF's era, Martial is the type of player he'd be upgrading on in the summer with a more prolific CF. This is the man who felt that Andy Cole, one of the prime goal-poachers the league had seen, could be upgraded upon and did it. What do you think he'd do with 15goals a season Martial?

So Greenwood is currently better than Rashford and James?
The phrase “one in the hand is worth two in the bush” springs to mind. All very well banging on about a player’s unlimited potential.

After 5 transfer windows - of the current squad i expect only the following to remain in the squad and be good enough for a title challenge:

Rashford, DDG, AWB, Maguire, Scott, James, Greenwood and Tuanzebe.

The rest will either move on or be sold. Martial is currently our best outfield player but after Pogba leaves he'll be public enemy no.1. - and we might lose him also because of the same reasons as we are likely to lose Pogba.

Basically, we need another 10 top quality players to come in over 2 summers to make our squad challenge for the title! Phew... Looks bleak! We may fill some of these spots with potential youth breakthroughs (like Brandon Williams, Garner, Gomes etc) but that means we'll get lucky on those ones.

Sure, it's not my intention at all to make him look like a speed merchant, I honestly believe hes doing pretty good and showing signs of improvement game by game which is great.

This is a very difficult question to answer because,of course,it is all relative to exactly which United team we are comparing this current squad of players with. For example,Stam,Vidic,Rio were all far far far better players than Harry Maguire.I am certain no-one could argue or dispute that.Maguire is good enough to stay and play in the current United team but no wayyyyyyyyyyyy on earth would I ever have signed him to play in a very good United side but, sadly,we do not have a very good United side at the moment and as a result,he would be deemed good enough to play in this one.The same goes for the likes of Dan James, look I like the lad, he is a trier and has been a big plus for us so far this season so,naturally,he would be classed as good enough but again, lets be 100% honest here,if the likes of Giggs,Beckham,Kanchelskis,Coppell were around then he would be a fringe player making at best, maybe 10 appearances a season. The most notable point would be that of De Gea as I would estimate the vast majority of supporters would think he was more than suitable/adequate for United which of course he is however if Peter Schmeichel or perhaps even Edwin Van De Sar were around, he would only be my third choice and similar to James, a back up footballer playing maybe a dozen times a season. The one enigma for want of a better word,is Paul Pogba who at his very very best which sadly has been hardly at all for United, would be of the calibre required though I do agree before anyone shoots me down that even though he is a World Cup winning midfielder he simply does not appear to want to be here and therefore even though I appreciate this is the subject of other posts,I would sell him

However some of our current regulars are still worth keeping around and playing their part in the team. I think the likes of McT, Fred, James, Williams, Lindelof, Tuanzebe, Dalot, can be good rotational players for us once we get upgrades in their respective positions. Certainly much better than having guys like Matic, Young, Jones, Rojo, Pereira, Lingard to fall back on.

As for Martial and Shaw, I think they are as good as they're going to be at this club. They aren't the quality we need to be a top team again and I doubt they'd be happy with a squad role, so moving forward I'm sceptical of their long term future here.

Good post man. Its not so much about comparing the lads today to the great Utd teams of modern times, but more creating a team that can realistically compete for domestic and European honours in today's world.

Rashford is so underrated. Goodness me, what he's accomplished at his age and the potential he's shown, shocking how low he's rated by so many.
Totally agree with this. The abuse Rashford gets on here is embarrassing. A young kid who's already achieved more than some players do in a full career yet some people would rather point out weaknesses in his game. He is no where near the finished article. Some people on here really have no idea about football or do they just like a moan ..

I would think of it more as you need 2 strikers, 3 wingers, 4 central mids, 2 quality fullbacks (teams do very well with just alright backups here often), 3 center backs and 1 quality keeper and we stand like this:

Striker: Martial + #9
Winger: Rashford, RW , James
Center Mid: Pogba, AM, DM, McTominay
Fullback: Wan Bissaka, LB,
CB: Maguire, Tuanzebe, Lindelof
GK: De Gea

and that's giving the benefit of the doubt to the CBs. Also Greenwood is obviously very promising, along with Gomes.
