I've always seen the black shorts as a bit of a curse so it got me thinking, does anyone know the reason why we wear black shorts away to City? City continue to wear white/light coloured shorts against us when they play at Old Trafford so surely its not a matter of clashing?

Can’t have both teams with similar colored shorts. It’s against the rules due to accessibility purposes (color blind people).

Probably because it might confuse people watching in black and white!
Did I catch you?

I have no problem with this but that doesn’t explain why City come to Old Trafford with white shorts when we wear white shorts does it?
I had to check some images on google search. You’re right. They have worn white at Old Trafford.

Because City was the home team so they get their choice of uniform and City's uniform includes white shorts. Teams don't wear the same colour shirts, socks or shorts when playing each other...

@RyRy11 I think the PL rulebook bans shirt clashes and sock clashes, but it doesn't ban shorts clashes. Therefore, City have the option to not wear change shorts when they come to OT. I also think that the CL doesn't allow shorts clashes although I do know for definite that the EFL doesn't tolerate shorts clashes so I think City would have to wear either sky blue/ navy shorts if they had to play a tie in the Carabao Cup at OT. Just to make another point, but some teams don't like wearing alternate shorts so they tend to use their away kits instead (Real Madrid tend to do this). Others like Arsenal have also done this for a long time, although Arsenal have worn red shorts with their home shirts a few times in the last few years. For what it's worth, City have changed shorts at OT before, as the link below shows. There's also an account on Twitter by the name of Museum of Jerseys who writes articles about kit info such as this.

I like MUFC's uniform with black shorts.
Don't like it with white shorts and socks too, looks too soft.
Red shirt, white shorts and black socks is where it's at.

Perfect! This is exactly what I was looking for. So I guess In cup competitions City would probably wear an alternate kit against us if we faced them at OT.

I feel like we only wear white shorts at home if there’s any type of clash.

If it’s a shirt clash then obviously we change the whole kit, if it’s just a shorts clash then we wear the black shorts.

If I had to guess, I would say that they would wear sky blue shorts. I stand to be corrected, but I think City’s Women’s team have used sky-blue alternate shorts in the past. City definitely used sky-blue shorts as part of their home kit back in 2014/15 if I recall correctly.

Just as a side note, but United wore red alternate shorts up until the early 1970s I think, something which would likely not happen now given their similarity to Liverpool.
