Only good thing about this is that Liverpool will surely get knocked out of the League Cup as a result of it.

So Hyehen Sport acquitted itself respectably by taking Xavi's Al-Sadd to extra time, eventually losing 3-1.
About as much as a 1st time participant from New Caledonia could've hoped for, I suppose (without wanting to sound too condescending).

Al-Sadd then fell to Monterrey in a 3-2 affair. With the deciding goal coming from Rogelio Funes Mori, twin brother of Ramiro (ex-Everton, current Villarreal defender).
On the other side of the bracket, Al-Hilal beat Espérance de Tunis 1-0 thanks to a Bafétimbi Gomis (remember him?) goal.

Semi-Finals :

17-Dec Flamengo (BRA) vs Al-Hilal (KSA)
18-Dec Liverpool (ENG) vs Monterrey (MEX)

Liverpool should win it, but you never know. They may rest players and rotate the team for it.

Any word on if the Premier League will allow Liverpool to wear the champions badge from this on their shirts in league games? When we won it last then we weren’t allowed to in league games, but obviously Liverpool are different.

Liverpool might as well play clubs in the North West Counties league if they want to play against this standard of football.

Im a Rayados fan. From what I saw saturday against a weak side like Al Sadd, I have my doubts about the competitiveness of the team.

This semester have been bittersweet, at the mid of October they were in 12th place in the local league. But former coach Antonio Mohamed returned to Rayados and barely made the playoffs in Liga MX. Classified in 8th place. At quaterfinals they face 1st place Santos where they beat them 3-6 (5-2 home, 1-1 away), at semis they beat Necaxa 3-1 (5th place) (2-1 home, 1-0 away). They're in the finals against America (6th place) to be played after the CWC, where Rayados are underdogs. So far with Mohamed they've been undefeated 10 wins and 2 draws.

Monterrey with Mohamed does not play possession. They usually get 35-40% possession and the average passes would be the low 200s, with between 70-75% effectiveness which I think is very low. It's mostly counter attacks and long passes. Monterrey is valued at €84.10m, making it arguably the most expensive team in Mexico and Top 10 in Latin america. However is greatly unbalanced nearly 75% of the value lies in attacking positions, and by far the weakest link is the defense.

Key players: Dorlan Pabon (COL), Rogelio Funes Mori (ARG), Rodolfo Pizarro, Jesus Gallardo, Carlos Rodriguez (MEX)

I've been a Man Utd fan since the 90s, and I hate the Reds. But I just dont see a way for Rayados to even compete to Liverpool side. I foresee a 3-1, but it can get ugly if they make the same mistakes they did in the defense. And now they have to rely on their weakest line. Let's see how they fare.

edit: Forgot to add this is the 4th CWC participation of Monterrey. In 2012 they faced Chelsea and fell 3-1.

Liverpool lost this tournament the last time around so I doubt it will be much of a competition. Honestly I don't understand why this is a thing still. FIFA wants to stay relevant at the club level I guess. Teams trophy hungry to bolster their stats? Must be the case because FIFA wants to make this competition bigger which is only a bad thing for top European teams who have enough on their plate.

Flamengo is one of the finalists, beating Asian champions Al Hilal 3-1.

The other leg will be decided tomorrow between Liverpool and Monterrey

I watched the part of the second half when the score was still 1-1, both teams looked very poor imo.

Flamengo is in off-season mode, their players are burned out after a very long season. It will be an ugly result at the final if Liverpool keeps the foot on the gas.

Weird. Resting Firmino and Mane on the bench despite wanting to go all out for this competition ?

It's against Monterrey, not City...

Shows how light we are in defense at the moment though, having to play Henderson there. He's gonna have to pass it forward more often than not for once.

Shocks happened at this tournament before though, Liverpool 2005, Barcelona 2006 and Chelsea 2012 from the top of my head. I really don't find a reason for him to rest players in 2 games tournament anyway.

Because we play more than enough games as it is. Any chance to give them a rest should be taken with two hands, and better to rest them now than in the final (should we get there). I like it.

A back four with Milner & Henderson, the stuff of dreams.

Crab like football played where it ought to be: in defence! Plus being a long ball team Hendo could be feeding Salah all night long. :)

Is this the same Funes who was kissing the Everton badge after getting sent off at 4-0 down in the derby?

‘’Possibly offside’’ the BBC commentators said, while Gomes was playing them onside by 2-3 yards
ex LFC defender Stephen Warnock talking some tremendous bollocks so far

Also gets to do most LFC games for BBC radio

Can't believe how weak liverpool look in defense as compared to when they play in the premier league. Three of the back four play these positions quite regularly. Not sure if Monterrey are that much better than an average premier league team or If Van Dijk is that good.

Ah, all the bias makes sense now. There wasn’t even a hint of offside so it was a totally random bit of ‘’commentary’’.

I swear Monterry are constantly the North American winners

Then again maybe they think the same about Real Madrid and Barcelona
