It speaks volumes that Jones is your best alternative to an injured Maguire.

The state of our squad is shocking.
To have a good season we genuinely had to go through the season without any injuries at all.

Even missing 1 or 2 and we have to bring in complete and utter dogshit like Jones or Lingard. The squad is disgracefully poor.

The irony is that the 1 goal we got probably saved ole from the chop.

Out of all the faults in this squad the most maddening one has to be that not one of them can complete a pass in a forward position. It's completely mind blowing just how talentless these players are. Get into a good position and then just give it away time after time. Oh yeah, and that was another spineless performance tonight. 3 shots on target and we were the home team! Bloody awful!!

Start with positives, Fred is not human, he ran himself to the ground for 90 minutes. He has been quality in last few months, he badly needs a proper player next to him. Although a little shaky at times, Williams was really good. Grew into the game, you wouldn't have known he has only played 10ish professional games. Greenwood's assist was absolute class, he is destined for great things. So glad to see Gomes come on and i thought he did well. Added a bot of calmness in the number 10, chased the ball down for our goal and added some positive energy. He has to start in that position and given a run. Rashford was okay in spells, Matic came on and did very well, Jones was okay, the rest were average too. I do not think there were any pathetic performances apart from this youngster we call Lingard. The second half was better but pnly becauae City sat back and saw the game out. We were tactically outclassed by a proper manager and a proper coach. That leads me on to the negatives, Ole. He is so out of his depth it is unreal. It was criminal to start Lingard who was literally pathetic and summoned us to play with 10 men. I am firmly Ole out especially with Poch in the sides. I love the guy, he was a brilliant player for us but for the love of football, he is not a manager. He would not be managing any side in the premier league, he has no plan B, he has no style. We will get destroyed at City unless something is done soon. I would start with playing Gomes has he had initially promised. I have zero worries about him not being strong enough, he has great centre of gravity from being short, the same height at James!

Lingard must be on that last 1/10th of a straw now surely. Gomes shown more in his 20 minute cameo than both Lingard and Pereira have done all season.
we simply have to buy this month.

How do people rate Fred so highly in this game when he was always making headless defensive runs while tracking City players in the 1st half?

Right feck it. Let's get a proper football manager in and give him funds to buy players that cost the same as players signed the best teams in the league.

We are well and truly and level below.

We started ok first 15 minutes. They scored a wonder goal on 17 and they stopped worrying about our pace and just passed it around us with complete control. We simply had no midfield other than Fred to compete.
We were very lucky not to go in 5-0 down.

Matics arrival steadied the ship and gave Fred a big help in CM. Matic is crucial to us right now..
City went into cruise mode allowing us back in the game and we gave it a good go 2nd half and scored a nice goal.

i can’t see us winning at theirs with this team but we have a slight chance instead of an embarrassingly no chance.

Loved williams passion Fred worked his socks off.
Jones is a complete flapper and needs fecking off and smalling bringing back. Smalling is a great back up defender, Jones is a shocking liability.

Head Wobbled. Oh...look! we scored 1 with no reply in the second half. Christ some people are negative. There's not a chance a United team under our previous managers would play football like we did in the second half against City.
I'm being negative because we've just got outplayed by City who didn't break a sweat. Got taunted by City fans the whole match and we have manager who is absolutely fecking useless. Think we're allowed to be negative.

And as for the bolded bit, what in the feck are you talking about? Go away.

Amongst footballing managerial 'Gods'
City put the car in park in the second half and we didn’t even look like a team that will trouble them. Our players played like we already lost before the game started. This is not United mentality, it is Cardiff mentality

- Brandon Williams was our best player tonight. Actually showed some tactical acumen and wasn't one dimensional going forward.
- Fred was good and energetic against a very good City press. He's inconsistent in the final third, but we'd be a shambles without him
- Matic was actually very good with the ball. Probably the only midfielder we have who can slot balls in between lines to move play forward.

- James eventually has to be dropped for Greenwood. If this is a meritocracy then it's only fair that Mason has warranted a role in the front three. I like James as a character and I think he's a good tactical fit, but he's not been productive in a while and I think we ought to send the right messages to the players that places must be earned.

- Same as above for Lingard, regarding earning his place. Just not cutting it, I'm afraid. Being a good tactical fit in terms of profile is one thing, but you have to be productive in some form, statistically. Either score, assist or make key passes.

- Rashford took the goal well but his general play is just unforgivable. There's always teammates in a better position and he never sees it. His head is always down, or he's dribbling into a dead end, or worse, he's already thinking about shooting at 40 yards. He's fine as a scorer of goals when he gets the chances, but he needs to be a better player, period.

I'm neither Ole in or Ole out, but you have to give a fair appraisal when it's necessary. It's okay to not win titles, and it's okay to expect a period of transition and development over time, but it's never okay to not have a discernible pattern of tactical identity this long into a managerial reign. We need to see something tactical where we can clearly identify that something is being worked on in training.
Pretty accurate description of the game. James I feel is unfortunate, as I would have expected him to be mainly a bench player this season, getting a few starts in cups and around Christmas and Easter times, but he has been thrust into a situation where he is still coming to terms with Premiership football, but I think he needs a break now, and I would give Chong another shot on the RW, as he did ok against Wolves. Thought Gomes did ok when he came on, created the goal by winning the ball and finding Greenwood in space, just a hint of what these young lads are capable of, didn't look out of place at all, definitely keep him in instead of Lingard, who is really struggling. A new start with another club may be the best for him really.

Very disappointing first half. City at their best and they were just too good for the team we put out. No point being outraged. They are CL favourites and a much better team than us right now. It was scary enough just looking at their bench let alone who was on the pitch.

Team selection - I mean, what could we have done differently? Hated the Andreas and Fred pairing but Matic has played two games in quick succession so in many ways the team picked itself. You wouldn't have had anyone on our bench in the team. We need players.

The good? - Fred again was excellent. Never stopped running and fighting. Williams held his own for the most part - worthy of keeping the shirt. Matic has played well recently - made a big difference.

Overall - nothing has changed. We aren't supposed to beat City at the moment. They have a genius of a coach who has had a lot of time and money to build this squad. Different level to us right now. I still firmly believe that we are 3 signings away from being a lot, lot better. It's hard to watch City come here and dominate but we just need to be patient.

They looked miles better than us. Second half they barely broke a sweat.

What I don't understand is, the club know we've been this bad for a long time so why haven't they planned ahead and acted early in the transfer window?! There's 12 Premiership points to play for, a League Cup final place and a place in the next round of the FA Cup. All put at risk because they want to wait until the last day of the window to save some money. Even then theres no guarentee of players joining, like what happened at the end of the summer.

Proper shambles

Having had such a poor half, it was important that we gave a good account of ourselves in the second, and felt we somewhat did that.

That said, tactically, the addition of Matic helped. We went to a diamond in the second half, thus filling up the midfield and not allowing, or certainly lessening City's dominance in the middle.

At 3-1, whilst unlikey that we'll go through, it gives us a little bit of a chance.

Feel sorry for the fans that made it to the stadium to have to watch that, especially in the first half. I was only watching it on my sky go that i get through my fathers account.

Hopefully that is the end of Lingard. If he is starting against Norwich, i wont bother watching the game.

Oh come on, I'm not getting into this. City were amazing in the first half and ripped our far worse team apart. Like i said I'm as much for getting rid of Ole as anyone but we got beat 3-1 by an amazing team, big deal.

There are plenty of other examples of why Ole is the wrong manager for us, you don't need to try use that result.
I think what worried people most was how much that first half highlighted the gulf in class between our two clubs. It's shameful how much better equipped they are considering they have spent only £200 million more than United on incoming transfers since SAF retired.

Changes are needed from top to bottom.

Your last paragraph is brilliant and on the point.

Ole is under the wheel rather than at the wheel. Win percentage of Man Utd managers:
SAF - 59.67%
Mourinho - 58.33%
Moyes - 52.94%
LVG - 52.43%
Sir Matt Busby - 52.38%
Ole - 27.3%

And worringly, these stats are before the last 3 Man Utd matches (1 draw, 2 losses).

I think the people saying “what did you expect against City” are missing the point, it wasn’t about dominating and/or winning. It’s about having a coherent plan on the field and a way of playing. That first half was Sunday league, nobody had a clue what to do or where to go, and it’s been apparent in quite a few games this season.

It hardly takes hindsight to realise a midfield three of Andreas, Lingard & Fred is tactical suicide. Supposedly lesser teams give a much greater account of themselves in these games.

Don’t worry though, a win via a dubious penalty (been far too long since our last one...) against Norwich and we’ll be back on track boys

But Gomes gave a grownup performance and for the first time in years we looked like we have a real attacking midfielder so that is the only positive...

You'd think after watching that shite, Woody will get his finger out and make squad additions over the coming weeks.

The trouble is, he won't. I'd put my house on him failing to make a signing this winter.

A meaningless consolation goal after a thrashing at home should be enough to see Ole keep his job.
A goal in the first leg of a semi final to make it 1-3. By first half showing we could well have lost 4 or 5 maybe even 6 to 0 so it is never meaningless. It could mean everything.
I'm an optimist, probably deluded but I have to believe... What if we score first at the emptyhad? It'll be interesting then.
We're not out of this yet.
