Thinking about conspiracy theories, we'l have Liverpool soon and that's likely to be a defeat that will send the online fan base in the typical meltdown. Announcing a deal then might be the best thing to do for the mental health of some of our more emotional fans.
But imagine getting spanked by them, and afterwards they announce that they have nabbed him from our grasp....?!!?

Firming up, exploring etc. Why is this is always the terminology, we should have firmed up, considered and explored for months prior to the damn window, why are we doing it during the window? Just unreal
I suppose journalist use this sort of language so they don't end up looking foolish if it doesn't happen. If it doesn't everybody's ire will fall on Ed.

I’m glad we look to be getting him but also frustrated. It was obvious we needed AT LEAST another midfielder in the summer and he was available. What the feck did we wait for.

A lot of stories today about Fernandes keen to join United. Maybe it's his/agent's way of putting pressure on Sporting and United to step it up. It on

Because he doesn't have Messi's pass percentage. Then they watched Lingard for most of the season.

It must get disheartening for the lad if you think you are getting transferred and it doesn't happen, then has to go back to just about carrying your football team.

Miguel Delaney waiting for one or two more others to tweet then he will confirm it may or may not happen.

Yeah. He showed a lot of respect to Sporting going by what has been written, they will let him go i think.

The tentative language used by the journos is them protecting themselves in case it doesn't happen. In this day and age, you get one transfer story wrong and you will be hounded on social media for months by all the keyboard warriors.

Hence all the 'preparing, firming up, closing in on; considering; definitely maybe possibly' that they use.

Don't forget 'exploring'. You are right.

Despite our firmed up probing and exploration we couldn't yet make him come?

You don't think signing Bruno is indication of a plan? If we were signing a LB or GK then that would show not having a plan but signing a quality player for a position we are lacking in depth or quality strikes me as pretty sensible.
No it doesn´t if it was he would already be playing for us. This signing dragging is another showing of no plan and foresight. We knew the squad was thin in the summer, if he is the man why didn´t we sign him then?

There's long term plans and plans that have to materialise quickly due to other circumstances. With how light we currently are in the middle of the park and how shit Lingard is and all the uncertainty surrounding Pogba, we needed someone who can give us that creative spark in midfield. Realistically who is available at this time of year? We've still got a chance of reaching top 4 and still in all cup competitions. I think this is planning and thinking ahead.

I think we were after him in the summer but his club started playing games and try to set up an auction. Understandly if they were trying to artificially inflate the price we stood back. Perhaps now is a more opportune moment to go back in as they have realised we won't be messed about with anymore.

comfortable and settled in my rut
I remember the days when the club would announce a transfer completely out the blue. Now you have to put up with a stream of tedious non-stories saying the same thing over and over through an agonizing wait for any kind of official confirmation. This will rumble on until the end of the month.
Nani/Anderson day was amazing.

BBC are overrated. May as well wait for the formal annoncement with that lot.
If Simon Stone says he wants to join, then he wants to join. BBC just won't report on conjecture and won't report something unless the source is as rock hard as Captain Holt's brain.

This, plus most likely the following reasons:

1. Ole wanting to give Lingard and Pereira a chance.
2. Ole counting on Pogba not being out for so long.
3. The sudden availability of Dybala and Eriksen just before the deadline.
4. The too-late transfers of Lukaku and Sanchez.

Sporting Lisbon want Manchester United to subsidise Marcos Rojo's wages if they want to include the defender in the deal to sign Bruno Fernandes.
The Red Devils had offered up Rojo, Joel Pereira or Angel Gomes in the package for the Portuguese playmaker, who is valued at around £50million plus add ons.

United are ready to table a bid worth £65m later this week as they look to wrap up a deal for Fernandes this month.
Negotiations with Sporting and the player's representatives continue, and it is claimed in Portugal that Rojo could be included in the package for the 25-year-old.
The Argentinian has been deemed surplus to requirements at Old Trafford, having made just three Premier League appearances all season.
However, Portuguese publication Ojogo report that Sporting want United to cover some of the defender's wage packet.
The uncertainty over his future would seem to have had little impact on Fernandes, who starred in Sporting's 3-1 win over Setubal on Saturday, scoring twice.
Fernandes, who scored 31 goals last season, has 15 from 24 appearances for Sporting this term, with Tottenham also interested in signing him.
Sporting coach Silas had claimed he is in the dark over United's interest in his star man.
Speaking after the the victory at Setubal, he said: "I can’t guarantee any of these things because I don’t know.
"I’m already thinking about the game with Benfica [on Friday] and I’m thinking about using him."
United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed he has the backing of the United board as he discussed a possible transfer for the 25-year-old.

The Mirror online today.

Sounds like we are saving 10s of millions & who knows maybe salary too.

Fans don't like it but we need to stop paying rojo money to average players and Sanchez money to good players without really ever being firm. The reason we can't sign players faster now is we already have the largest wage bill in the league, because we weren't more picky in years gone by.

It is clear sporting are desperate to move fernandes on while his form holds out, they are using every media source they have to get fans upset at the club to pressure them into overpaying, credit should go to the club if we didn't panic in summer on a player that is a risk if the overall package is so large that we cannot sign another 10 if we sign him and he flops

We should have a deeper list of options if players pay hardball though, and just move on like most other clubs

We should not subsidise any player salary. It's getting out of control. Every team wants this and I only hear this about our players. Other team have no problem moving out their players on high wages.

If Rojo doesn't want to accept the contract offer then we should not pursue this player offer deal and do the deal independently and tell Rojo that his United career is over
