I'd have to agree, he has been given starts against lower league opposition, and still didn't look like he could hack it. Brandon Williams and Greenwood have raised their game at the highest level against top opposition.
This is when you know you have a player on your hands. They come in and look right at home. Unfazed.

Chong has frozen each time I’ve seen him. Gomes looks too lightweight atm. Both could do with further development away from the glare of Old Trafford

No, just the ones I think are overrated. I am English after all too
On balance, Grealish carries Villa pretty much every time. I’m always a bit reluctant to go after players who do that in poor sides. Could he come here and fit in? Don’t know. Villa revolve around him so much and Utd wouldn’t.

I think we're signing a player who's likely to need quite a while to adjust and we're doing it due to short term considerations only. If we were signing Grealish or Maddison it would make more sense as they're already up to speed with the PL but I just don't see this having a significant impact this season and it means we won't be signing our top targets for the position in the summer. If he's good enough now why wasn't he signed last summer? It reeks of both poor planning and short term thinking, something I though we were getting away from. Like I said, it's the first time I've really doubted Ole is the right man for the job (obviously I hope I'm wrong).
Last summer there were a lot of reports of our interest so it's hardly a surprise we're making a move. Maybe he is our top target and not Grealish. Why would we assume otherwise? With Lingard on the way out and Mata with just one more year of contract and playing a part time role there is room for both Bruno and a Madison/Grealish. Gomes is young and first he needs to commit his future to the club before we decide his playing time. He's been injured this season a lot otherwise he would have played more imo.

Can't believe people find negatives to signing the most prolific midfielder in Europe with a fantastic work ethic and by all account a top individual as well.

What do you mean, when? Why do you think Gomes is not playing since the beginning of the season? He doesn't want to sign... So Ole doesn't want to develop him and then let him go for free.
You claimed Gomes has said he doesn't want to sign, so by when i meant when did he say this.

From your response it's obvious what you meant is you've inferred that he's told the club he doesn't want to sign.

There’s nothing new in it.
We were interested in summer, but thought he was too expensive. They’ve lowered their asking price but also want Rojo. Rojo is keen to leave, but Sporting don’t want to pay his wages. Woodward hopes for the deal to be finished soon.
Thanks.

Yeah no direct quotes but that's what has been shared through the media. And it's the only explanation on why Angel doesn't make the team most of the time unfortunately.

But he's back in the team more now, leading to noises suggesting there's been some positive movement when it comes to him signing a new contract.

I don't doubt his work ethic and he might walk into the PL and take to it straight away, I just think it's unlikely. He gets much more time and space in Portugal and his mistakes aren't punished in the way they will be here.

If he's our top target and we're signing him now because he was too expensive last summer then great but he'll most likely need an adjustment period and we'll only start to see the best of him next season, by which time most people on here will already have written him off as a shit flop.

Didn't one of our resident Portuguese caftards already explain his theory on why his spell in Italy was unsuccessful or was it @devilish ?
Apparently, he was made to play deeper as he's got a very good work rate which in turn negated his best qualities.
I wouldn't say his time in Italy was unsuccessful honestly. He moved in Italy at age 18 were he played with a struggling Novara scoring 4 goals in 23 games. He then moved to Udinese he scored 11 goals and 13 assist in 95 games only to move at Sampdoria. He spent just 1 year at Sampdoria were he was constantly moved around mainly cause there had the more physically imposing Shick there. However he still scored 5 goals in 35 matches there. Regarding him being sold that doesn't come as a surprise as Sampdoria is a selling club. Apart from Bruno (8.5m), Samp also sold Skriniar (20m), Luis Muriel (20m) and Patrick Schick (5m loan, 9m fee afterwards with 8m in bonuses) that year, all on cheap, all great talent. So lets not pretend that Bruno was some flop whom Sampdoria kicked out in disgrace. This is a club who would probably send the owner's daughter to prostitute for the right price.

He's not back in the team, he's a sub in the last 10 mn... Is that an attempt to say all stories are BS and Ole is not playing him because he's stupid?

So we just carry on with matic-Fred-pareira and hope no one else gets injured? We literally don’t have anyone else unless you want to see jones in midfield or Lingard. We need players.

Secondly, We aren’t going to spend €50m or whatever on a player unless we rate him.

Lastly, there is nothing other than rumours linking us to Maddison and grealish so why should we hold?

Mane, VVD. Nothing wrong with signing a big fish from a small pond, sometimes they are just waiting for the opportunity to thrive on a bigger stage.

Prove it. Just prove it. No one knows what this means for our transfer policy seeing as I don't think anyone saw this move happening this month. But any reason to be negative eh, doesn't take much.
I can't see how one can slot both Maddison and Bruno together unless we go for a narrow 4-3-2-1.

United should be able to afford to have competition bruno and one of maddison/grealish is great for the squad although costly. Why does it suddenly have to be either or.

OK, fair enough. It just looks to me like we wanted him last summer but the price was to much and now it got more reasonable; making him part of the long term plan. He might not kick the ground running this season but with a few months of football under his belt he should be ready to go next season. I guess i'm not looking at him as a saviour for this season but rather part of the rebuild; we just happen to be able to make the deal happen now rather then last summer. Having him here now should, adjusted to the league or not, help a lot given our injury crisis. It's a win win i think.

I remember all the caf experts saying we were missing out when we didn’t sign Pepe or Keita, swore black was blue that they were both the second coming and would rip up the premier league . I’m not against this signing as we need some bodies in midfield, but I would be disappointed if he replaces one of our other rumoured targets like Maddison or Grealish. He seems ok from the very limited amounts I’ve seen of him and, who doesn’t love a transfer, but...

The last time we afforded 2 high tier playmakers was during Veron-Scholes time. It didn't really worked well. Graelish wouldn't have been too much of an issue if only he could also play as RW instead of LW. We've got James, Martial and Rashy there. Therefore in such circumstances we should consider signing one between Bruno/Graelish/Maddison + someone like Zaniolo. The latter is doing wonders as Right sided forward.

1) Pogba and McTominay will be back in a couple of weeks so the currect situation will resolve itself soon enough.

2) This is what I'm afraid of, signing someone we're not all that keen on because he's available, we can't get our top targets and they're thinking we need to get top 4. Considering the financial implications of missing out on CL football (both TV money and sponsorship penalties that will kick in next season) he will have paid for himself if he helps us get top 4. I just don't see it happening. Like I said in another post he's likely to take time to adjust to the PL and we'll only start to see the best of him next season, by which time most of the people desperate for his signiture in this thread will have written him off as a failure and not good enough.

3) You're right about Maddison and Grealish but my point was that they don't need time to adjust to the PL and so are more likely to help us get into the top 4.

We are not signing Grealish or Maddison in January so why are you even talking about them? Bruno Fernandes is the highest goalscoring midfielder in Europe and if you've watched him at all you'd see he's several levels above both of those players.

If Leicester could took us to the cleaners for the new Steve Bruce then imagine what they actually do with a player who is actually very talented. You might not notice but we're in the beginning of a huge rebuild. We can't afford spending all the dosh on 1-2 decent but hardly WC players again.

I think he will come here but this is crazy how we do business. Not having a clear plan for this window is showing us that we are totally clueless when it comes to signings.
We have watched him for a long time, showed interest in the summer but for whatever reason decided against, and he plays in a position we need to strenghten. I does show the club has a plan.

the muppets expect us to win matches without a midfield...and when we lose blame Ole.

Some people completely disregard the role the player played in, system, actual abilities as a player etc.

This season in the Portuguese league (using Whoscored as the basis for the stats):

Highest rating in the league. Don't know what to take from this given that their algorithm is "secret" and seems to give high ratings to offensive players. I would argue that their weighting of different elements of the game is wrong (https://lib.ugent.be/fulltxt/RUG01/002/304/375/RUG01-002304375_2016_0001_AC.pdf) and favours offensive players with a high risk/reward style of play --> Pepe and Ben Arfa top 10 ratings in Ligue 1 last season. What WhoScored is useful for is raw data: Key passes, loss of possession, long balls etc.

Key Passes: 3.7 per game. (Set pieces included)
Long balls (over 25 yards): 3.9 successful, 3.9 unsuccessful
Short passing: 40 successful, 10 unsuccessful.
Dispossessed: 2.1 times per game. Unsuccessful touches 2.7 times per game. Combined they are higher than PP last season.
3.6 shots per game.

In general, he plays high-risk football. I think his attractive stats, like goals, assists and key passes per game are not going to translate into our league at all (similar to Pepe for Arsenal). He will get even less time on the ball and not the same opportunities or situations for pinpointing a cross or the final pass. People thinking that he will help our passing and build-up play will be disappointed. Our problems in trying to create against a balanced defence will not be fixed by adding a gung-ho player like him that will shot or try to make the killer pass as soon as he gets the ball in the final third. Patience, efficient passing and movement until good situations happens (What City does) is what is needed for this. And Bruno Fernandes is not the type of player to play this type of football.

He will be an asset on set pieces, should we sign him, but struggle in the general play against teams and players that will not give him time on the ball nor allow many situations where he will be able to play the final pass. And he is not good enough on the ball or physical enough to create these situations for himself either without risking to lose the ball.

For our current approach on how to attack (transition dependent, inpatient and coincidental), Bruno would fit right in. When OGS is replaced, hopefully by a manager and coaching team that prefers a more relevant type of football, his high-risk style of play may not be that useful anymore.
There’s this new thing, it’s called actually watching football, not just reading stats. I know, crazy!

I don’t know anymore than you about him btw, but to come to this conclusion before he’s kicked a ball for us seems kind of mental imo.

The Pattern of Ed's play is getting quite predictable.

Leak Van De Beek rumours as soon as the city humiliation
Get Bruno rumours started and drag till end of the month and pull away with quotes "Sporting wanted too much", 'Agent wanted a part of OT as negotiations' etc and sustain the 'No value in the market' statements.

We might still get Bruno but the pattern emerging is not going to fool anyone
So Woodward was briefing the press in Portugal and Holland? Impressive.

This might the longest transfer saga in United history. I don't recall another spanning two transfer windows except for Van Nistlerooy, but that one was firm from the beginning.
That must be Gaitan. Could still happen that one.
