Fully agree with this. I literally do not get the moral standards we cherry pick today. People harp on about cutting fossil fuel usage but happily consume meat (higher carbon footprint per capita than carbon emissions from an automobile). Oppressive Saudi regime but using iPhone made in China is fine. I don't really protest any of these since I do not understand where an objective line can be drawn. It's become so tedious now :/
Hit the nail on the head. People with moral compass gymnastics. Cringe but not surprising.

The UK Government is not interested in buying man utd and if they were I would object
as i alluded to above, why is this the line? why are we all happy to buy clothes and shoes made in sweat shops but only when our football team (of all things) could be bought do our morals finally kick in?

I think most people are well aware of the humanitarian crimes carried out by all countries even the ones we are in. I don't think any country or regime should be allowed to buy a football club the soul purpose would be just to improve their image on a global scale.
didn't answer the question though.

Correct.
The press would hang it like an albatross around our neck. Every win would be followed by a piece on the regime instead of our victory.
Well the Saudi's have great ways of dealing with the media. Picture the scene; Lockhurst, Castles et al giving us a tough time in the media only to be found leaving the press room at Old Trafford inside a couple of suitcases never to be heard from again.

Infact remind me why this is such a bad idea again?

the question is whether people would be just as against a US consortium bid lead by Trump and Bush.
Between trump/bush & MBS I can guess which one would expect our players to be subservient to them and want to lead them in daily prayer.

That’s a lot of whataboutism for one post. I don’t care if we were winning absolutely everything at a canter and the Saudi’s took over. I still wouldn’t support a team owned by the Saudi state. If you could and would, all the power to you.
We manage to live in countries that created the Saudi state. Compared to the U.S/U.K, the Saudi regime is Non League when it comes to murder. The top of that soap box is getting a little slippery

Why septic, are you assuming that everyone's morals have only just kicked in!

This is a thread about the House of Saud buying man utd (the clue is in the name) and so people are posting why they would not like this to happen. No-one has said that they have never thought about other moral issues ever.

About capitalism? What do you want me to say, Apple and Nike are evil and we should all boycott them, I think its a personal choice TBH. Singling out successful multinational companies is an exceptionally easy thing to do. As far as I am aware they break no laws in China and compared to other employers there they are pretty good employers. Is it right that we in the West exploiting poor countries, no of course not and these companies should be pushed to improve their working environments further. Again though they are bringing skilled technical jobs to a country that is still developing. If you think Apples "sweat shops" are bad take a look at numbers of deaths in China's construction industry, or its mining industry or its agri/food industry.

Don’t forget driving cars. Beheadings suddenly become negotiable when it’s time to ride a bicycle to work.

Liverpool possibly equalling and going past our league title tally or a broken moral compass?

I know which I prefer. Bring on that filthy war chest

Unfortunately, you won't get one. Ive posted a couple times, trying to show a new perspective or angle to this deal. Maybe a country trying to better itself? But doesn't even get a look in. Everyone wants to jump to their assumptions and clouded moral judgement.

No one said this is the line, just that it definitely crosses the line for them.

Everyone's line is going to be a personal thing.

Me personally, I probably buy clothes and shoes that maybe made in sweat shops, it is difficult for me to identify the source and working conditions behind every item I purchase on a day to day basis. However, where I can I do choose ethically sourced/fair trade.

Where is the line, well for me the line is being owned by any state/government regardless of which one.

You have made it clear that House Of Saud ownership, for you, does not cross the line and so I can only surmise that for you, the line is somewhere between being owned by the House Of Saud and being owned by Pol Pott / Adolf Hitler. If that doesn't cross your moral line septic, then you don't have one.

Because it's actually different. One a state-sponsored purchase of the club the other the purchase of the club from citizens of the state. Secondly, claiming hypocrisy by throwing out random examples to generalize those against MBS ownership is quite laughable. A person can choose to not support a football club just like they can choose not to drive or choose to wear an eco-friendly brand of shoes. Even if they hold two positions you personally find conflicting, some people hold greater moral value on different actions, nor have the information to make the decision or viable alternatives.

While i agree to disagree; i find it difficult to comprehend a society led by a Queen, particularly how power was gained and is retained, questioning a society with a monarchy with lessor, western derived, progression accepting a take over of MU. I have lessor affinity with totalitarian over nepotistic totalitarianism particularly with signs of change within nepotistic totalitarianism.

That said; is Donald totalitarianistic? Is Boris leaning to the same thinking...

1. The bolded is completely false. United cannot spend £250m per season without the Saudis injecting money into the club.
2. That really doesn't matter. If United are a club backed by the Suadi government the supporters would universally be looked at as plastic. The same as any club. The football world would roll their eyes after all United's successes just like City and PSG. If Liverpool were bought by MBS instead of FSG, and financially doped to get to where they are doing you honestly think the praise they have received would be the same?
1) don't you mean increased incentive use MU as a tool, by sponsorship, which costs more than other clubs..
2) back by? Where is the evidence MU will be back by government.

But we wouldn't. Our debt would be wiped and the Saudis wouldn't need to put any of their wealth into buying players. We can already afford to spend £250m per season of our own earnings but the Glazer's choose not too. Man city, PSG etc was different as they were eaning peanuts as they were shit and didnt bring in much money. Plus what would make us plastic as we are already a huge club with a great history.

The truth is these "morals" would last one transfer window. Saudi's come in and buy 3-4 world class players and that's the end of the discussion. Everything would switch - United make their own money - and no one would complain about the ownership. It happens now with the majority of the fans towards the Glazers and Ed. One moment there's a walk out and chants going on at OT, bring a player in and that's the end of it.

If MBS takes over at United, what are we hoping he brings to United, that is not there now?

I'm talking about the solutions to the fans requirements!

1. Debt free club.

2. Money to improve the stadium which in parts is now a total disgrace. Not befitting of one of the biggest sports teams in the world. It need huge amounts spending on it if the plan is to stay at OT long term and not build a new ground.

3. New CEO and total restructure of management. Woodward sacked.

4. With no debt and no dividends to pay out we would have far more money available for new players every year.

5. No more Glazers, no more woodward and maybe the toxic atmosphere hanging over the club would finally go.

I don't know anything about politics - but from personality wise -

Glazers are okay with being 1-6th best as long as its okay for them.

MBS won't be okay with that - they will go for the top & I mean the top, top of the PL and top of the CL.

I think just in general its unfair to say theres a difference in the mindset between a class of people, but we just have owners that could try harder.

You look at City & their plan from the start to get Guardiola was obvious even if its flawed - but that's from a mindset. I'm 100% sure it's that mindset that would arrive at the club if they took over.

Highly competitive mindset.

I generally agree with you. I'm just hoping 3 would have a direct impact to 4. We have spent plenty of money in the past 7 years, just not very wisely. So I'd say point 3 is very critical.

Yea, City definitely had a clear plan and executed it. Probably hasn't turned out exactly how they wanted it but have done a good job.

Typical Western narrative though that it's only the middle East with terrible and evil leaders. It's all just spin. America attack more countries than any other and they are somehow portrayed as the saviours.
This is like saying because police officers kill people, they must be very good people themselves. Sometimes the world needs a little policing.

America only 'police' the world when there's something in it for them. Why didn't they go into Zimbabwe and stop Robert Mugabe who slaughtered tens of thousands? Nothing in it for them that's why.

The middle east was and always has been their goal. Bush Senior started it and his son took over.

Them all includes the UK and the US. That's the point I was making and you seem to have missed.

Well this is just false. America portrays itself as the saviors, but America is widely hated around the world. I say this as an American who actually travels to other countries.

Yeah. Don't really understand why this bothers people so much.
Chelsea are owned by a -literal ex KGB gangster- and their fans -do not care-.
Manchester City's owners (most specifically Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan ) have been accused of participating in atrocities in Yemen.
The bluemoon brigade do not give a flying feck and use the billions they've been spent on (while an average attendance of 42,000 actually go to the plastics games) to dare to look down their noses at us.
We are owned by some feckers who've set up a blood sucking parasitic hedge fund to slowly financing some sort of stock options in America through the lifeblood of what used to be our club while Old Trafford leaks and we sign loan players from China.
Like - most football fans wouldn't care if ISIS came and bought out their team, as long as it translated to good football on the pitch.
Me? I've been to the Middle East, if not Saudi specifically, and my family -has- been there. It's not the backwater shithole people seem to think it is on here - look up Neom and the plans they've got there. It's mental
Yeah they are still stuck in religious strife and there are certain things their religion espouse that don't really marry with Western ideals, but that's probably the case for like 95% of the WORLD. We don't really hold the moral high ground over -anyone-, but I think because it's Manchester United, and opposing fans would prefer us to remain in crippling debt, it's in their interest to vehemently oppose them coming in for us, and our fans are generally fairly liberal and moral (the worldwide base) so they tend to agree.

Again this is a tad stupid because I have no idea about politics & I have no interest in it -

But say in the future if the oil industry goes bust due to a rise in electricity will that effect Saudi Arabia?

Just want to point out that nobody actually thinks it's a backwater swamp over there... I mean Dubai is one of the most modern and impressive cities in the world, even if it was built from dodgy labour practices. I can only imagine Saudi Arabia being better not worse. It's their laws and traditions that are considered backwater by the western world.

Do you mean the same government that murdered a journalist for criticizing the government? Many see these plans as nothing but PR for the rest of the world. It's not about transforming themselves. It's about having a PR vehicle, which is what United would be.

United benefits monetarily but will be forever known as a plastic, oil-backed club sponsored by an oppressive regime no matter how much everyone wants to deny it.
Well of course it’s a PR thing because they’re trying to modernize to be an economic powerhouse to compete against Qatar and UAE. It’s not fake since part of that plan is to build a brand new mega city, which is already starting. They can’t rely on oil forever.

And I have to break it to you, but United are already a PR vehicle for corporations who do all they can to part fans from their money, time, and privacy. Our team is already whored out like a circus on the road with those US, Australia, and Chinese markets — the US and China being murderers of their own will yet we happily take their money. Modern football is a multi billion dollar industry and it costs money to compete with the best and be successful. And despite being oil-backed, most fans will wind themselves in once we start winning trophies and we’ll be here talking formations and being muppets for transfers.

US, UK, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Italy were totally built by fair business practices and not because of slavery and exploitation of the rest of the world. No that would be crazy.

And before Obama is was shit. I really have never gotten that feeling that Brits are pro-Americans (granted I've only visited London and Manchester). I felt like the attitude was of general indifference. Many Brits had negative stereotypes about Americans.

Regardless, America doesn't have permanent regimes so whatever comparison people are trying to make between the Saudis and US government is irrelevant.

It’s almost impossible to be an ethical consumer in a capitalist world. Best we can do is buy ethically sourced food and electric vehicles, if we can afford it.

If you are even thinking of that, I would question your support in the first place. How can you just support some other club? "I don't like Saudis at United, I will just go support City instead as their owners are much better".
He’s talking shit. We’ll win a trophy or two and he’ll come around.
