Up to 639 confirmed deaths, 31,586 confirmed cases.

However, the Chinese are definitely not letting on the full gravity of the situation. There are currently rumours in China of a vaccine that is available, where this has come from I don't know but could be the CCP or could just be (forgive the pun) Chinese whispers.

Tencent have released heavily inflated figures twice now before reverting to the CCP's official figures. Also the misinformation regarding the whistleblower who is now dead and wasn't resuscitated (that was shown to be a ruse).

There are internet shortages sporadically across mainland China occurring, however news is filtering through as are multiple videos of some truly horrific images.

No is the short answer. The cases have been steadily climbing and I wouldn't be surprised if they're drip feeding us the actual numbers.

The numbers are confirmed cases, so its people that have made it to a doctor for a proper examination and diagnosis. Actual numbers will obviously be higher but that doesn't neccessarily mean they are manipulated.

A doctor did predict that the virus would peak by Sunday/Monday. Lets see if he was right.

I wonder if there have been any cases of burka women being infected? Probably not.

I bet they are feeling very smug right now, not that we will ever know or see. ;)
I suspect quite a few of us have wondered about this. Is there any evidence that face-covering women get fewer colds and things though? They'll just catch it off their husbands and children won't they?

If we look beyond the trustworthiness of the Chinese figures, it is still likely that the number of infected is way higher than reported. Due to the supply crunch, it seems that suspected cases in Wuhan has to wait more than a month before test results are out. So basically the number released probably reflects the situation a month ago there.

Did he die though? :)
Worrying as he's quite young. He doesn't fit the profile of most deaths that are reported thus far; the elderly and those with pre-existing health issues.
The chinese guy that died in the Philippines was only 44 too. Not sure either of his overall health, prior to Wuhan flu
Wondering the same. Seen a few reports of people in their 30s dying..

Normally I would agree, but with China its probably more likely that it has been manipulated!

Got a email friend who's living in a province nearby to Hubei. Everyone there is scared like shit and looks like people are afraid to travel, meet or congregate anywhere. Schools are closed and most contract/temporary work has stopped leaving bunch of people without salary. The downstream impact is quite severe all over China.

Also looks like some are are stockpiling masks and selling them at inflated prices. Scum, profiting in tragedy. Hope they catch the virus first!

It looks like the coronavirus is a hell of a lot more infectious than SARS.

But thankfully, so far, much less deadly (coronavirus is at about 2%, SARS was at about 10%).

But now, another 5 Brits have just got infected at a ski chalet in France. This is going to get much worse before it gets better. The genie is out of the bottle.

Not sure any deadliness comparisons can be done yet? The SARS data is final. Of the Wuhan virus only 2k or so of those cases have recovered.

this will become a true pandemic.
I.e. almost everyone in the world will become exposed at some point.
its already way too far gone to contain and I suspect people working on it know that already.
A vaccine will be fast tracked but the timescales for that are way to slow to do anything. Maybe in a year someone will have something tested and ready for production. Something of a space race this is for big pharma. Whoever gets there first will be quids in.
So, stay healthy everyone!

Glad I'm not taking packed stuffy trains to work every day at a place full of international students now anyway. Two prime places for catching anything going round.

The subway here in Toronto is a good example of that. Two confirmed cases of Coronavirus in this city so far as well.

Not only physical. This could lead the world into recession.

Already prices are starting to creep due to import restrictions on chinese goods. Tourism certainly took a hit. Airlines etc.

Cathay pacific forced their 27k workforce to stay at home without pay.

Tend to agree...
A 2 week incubation period where you might have no symptoms or the symptoms might feel like you just have a normal cold / flu.
It makes the tracing and isolating pretty much impossible.
The death rate seems low but if it strikes Europe in the middle of a cold spell or it hits parts of Africa in the middle of the summer then those death rates could spike as well

The Chinese governments lack of concern for its citizens might be exactly whats needed to nip this in the bud. I know everyone likes to hate on them for being autocrats, but I feel its brutality in trying to stamp out this virus is well placed.

I’m on holiday, we landed today in Italy and they were doing temperature readings on all arriving passengers. Starting to get a bit scared now!

From what i understand, that family had arrived from a city that had a high infection rate and were being placed under quarantine, so its akin to a house arrest. No need to be dramatic.

What? People are already dying. You have any way of stopping a virus spreading that doesn't involve a lockdown? What they're doing is what I would recommend done. Quarantine, seal, lock, control the spread. And no one better than a single minded autocratic entity to implement it.

That “single minded autocratic entity” as you put it, did way more harm by restricting information from being released initially.

Whatever they do it is too late, the virus is already out there, in the wild, worldwide.

But WELDING people inside of buildings is never a solution ffs.

Also I actually believe those tencent figures to be closer to the truth sadly, I can't trust China to reveal the real figure.

Scary.

Was it?

Imagine letting people freely spread the news about a deadly virus. People would panic and flee the affected areas, carrying the disease everywhere.

You know that the news currently has been spread freely around the world about exactly this deadly virus, as has been the case for bird flu, swine flu etc. in the past...

They are using padlocks, not welding. Its fine not to trust government officials but you should at least fact check before completely trusting a twitter account that calls itself Captain Planet.
