So basically what I'm taking from that is that it's all gonna kick off in the next few weeks, you're more likely to catch it than not but that you've got a good chance of pulling through if you're healthy.

NHS could well be in meltdown by March/April though.
Not even sure why people are going to the NHS for cold/flu anyway?

What can hospitals do for you that you can't get at home? (unless breathing troubles/pneumonia) it's better for people to stay away at home and contain the virus until it's gone.

Because people are idiots.

You wait until someone dies from it (or rather complications arising from it) here. Panic buy!

Be interesting to see how the goverment communicates to the public to try and quell any hysteria.

Yeah everyone work from home until April. That should sort it. I actually could tbf but I like to live dangerously...
Its probably the best method of stopping its transmission. After about two weeks, you'd probably be able to identify most, if not all, the cases.

Fine by me. I have just started being able to roughly aim where i'm going to throw on my dart board I got for christmas, i'm finally not terrible on COD, and just started to play gran turismo. I am happy "working from home" permanently for a bit.

Of course it isn't but I think only a very small people will develop pneumonia just like those who have the flu.

Just seen this on Reddit which is a transcript of an interview with Prof Neil Ferguson - Director of MRC Centre for Global Infectious Disease Analysis, Imperial College London on R4...
That is frightening indeed. Especially for all the new born and old people.

Is it? The "super speader" was discharged in 5 days. I said this before but China (the government) has caused its own destruction here. Just compare the mortality rates within China to those outside. Only two people have died outside of China and I imagine its because the rest of the world was prepared.

My cousin is a very well respected doctor in London and he believes its fear mongering at its finest. Won't say I totally agree though.

The reason so many have died in China is because they are overrun with cases. There's nothing to suggest that can't happen elsewhere.

And why do you think they were over run with cases? It is believed that the first case came about in early December yet news only started to break in late January.

Really? I studied bacterial infections and honestly cannot remember this. Was a few years ago.
I am sure that you are far more knowledgeable than me.
I have just quickly looked at the NHS website for antibiotic resistance and it mentions that there are some strain's of bacteria that are already resistant to current antibiotics.

Think it's common knowledge? Bacteria are developing resistance to anti biotics faster than newer ones are being formulated.
I was referring to the part where we're one mutation away from being unable to fight against bacterial infections. One thing I learnt is never trust pharmaceutical companies. They lie A LOT.

I'm with you on that!

But there's some truth in what I said. At least here in India, many doctors directly prescribe higher classes of anti biotics without even trying the frontline ones first.

This whole pandemic is off to me. Something just doesn't feel right about whats happening.

Science has advanced an incredible amount in just the last 10 years and yet here we are unable to fight against a different strain of the common cold?

For anyone interested in losing an hour or ten (and wants to go back to panic mode), this guy is a British doc that seems to be spending all his time right now reading through published reports from the medical community and explaining them with multiple daily vids on youtube.
His latest vid:

This is slightly more alarming. Yeah, if it spreads in UK, at the same rate it did in China and 11% of the infected are severely ill who require urgent hospitalisation -- we'd be overwhelmed. I mean, we hardly have beds as it is.

Do you think the large brands would close and cities would be closed as they are in China

I'm sure UK would attempt to do it. Depends where clusters appear I suppose. In fact I'm not sure how UK would cope. China have a lot more man power obviously and can mobilise far quicker. Again, having been to an A&E a month back during week night, and having seen the immense pressure the staff are under, I seriously doubt they'd be able to cope with a fraction of confirmed cases as are reported in China, considering it was pure bedlam on a Thursday night with a few minor injuries and drunks being tended to.

I wish it was.

Indonesia has 0 infected. But i hazard a very scary guess that we just dont have the tools nor the ability to detect covid.

What took months to create antivirus used to took decades.

Humanity has beaten and outlived alot of deadly virus and plaque along history. Things like malaria, dengue, tbc, small pox and many other trivial sickness these days, used to kills by millions.

The only reason it's so bad in China is due to the bad timing.

The long incubation period of the virus and the Chinese flying back to their hometown for the Chinese New Year celebrations means that it's basically impossible to trace every patient and the people they've come in contact with.

There is no vaccine or treatment for the common cold yet either.

What about all those tablets? Are they not treatments?

That sounds a bit sarvastic but its a genuine question
They can help alleviate the symptoms but don't attack or stop the virus. To be fair that'd be exactly the same with Wuhan, a paracetamol will bring your temperature down as that's what it does but it's all about waiting for your body to learn how to attack and eventually kill the virus.

They make you feel a bit better through caffeine and paracetamol and that's surely worth something

It's why most of the deaths being reported are those with weak immune systems - they're unable to fight the virus (as well as not being treated properly by the health care system).

That's why I said earlier, it doesn't make a whole load of sense. Either its really, really fecking serious or it's fear mongering. Or something else entirely - Chinese government killing their own?

They're doing nothing to fight the illness, it just alleviates the symptoms.

We totally need to shut down travel to and from
China. It seems we are not even screening people at the other end. The government are taking a very blasé approach to this.

Nonchalantly scoring the winner...
fecking shut down travel to and from China FFS.

There are babies and old people (who've contributed tax money for decades) and ill people in hospitals who deserve better than this.

Who fecking cares if it's 'tricky' to get travel to and from China for a few months.

fecking shut it down, blithering morons.

My wit's end
Given the speed at which this is spreading, all these travel restrictions feel like shutting the barn door after the horse has bolted. The virus has already crossed international boundaries and it's very obviously slipping through the net in a lot of places around the world.

I fully expect C-19 to reach here sooner rather than later. And because I live a life that sees me congregating with a lot a international-types and frequent travellers, I've pretty much resigned myself to getting the virus at some point.

I guess I'm a little worried, but not particularly frightened for myself. Luckily I'm still young, fit and healthy so I figure my chances are about as good as they would be if I caught the flu. But fingers-crossed they can come up with a vaccine for the more vulnerable (and hopefully I don't turn out to be one of them).

Malaria kills about half a million people per year. Around 200 million get malaria on a yearly base, often having devastating effects on their lives. Wouldn't call that a trivial disease.

Ah, it’s ok, the London-virus-woman only landed at Heathrow....hardly anyone there and it’s not a confined space. No chance of passing it around.
Even better if she used the tube a few times as well

Typical, today they said new cases were slowing and then they pump out numbers lots had presumed
