I had the worst flu I've ever had in December too. Lasted from 18 Dec - 27 Dec. It was crazy because I'd just completed a 4 week powerlifting strength gain cycle in gym, and PR'd in all my lifts, so theoretically was the strongest Ive ever been. And yet during this flu, I could barely go for a 10 min walk before feeling exhausted.

Started with a dry cough, quickly became like I had glass in my throat and I was dreading each time I coughed. Lasted 3 days. Then came a crazy fever and the deep flu sleep that comes with that. That lasted 3 days. Then I had these crazy intense abdominal pains, like I'd been punched just below the rib cage. Half way through this saga, I felt vaguely suicidal for 3 days, especially at sleep time, when I was questioning the purpose of life itself.

My Mum also had it a few days before me, I almost certainly contracted it from her. She had very similar symptoms but not quite as bad and recovered more quickly. Neither of us went to the doctor, we just assumed it was seasonal flu and toughed it out using OTC medicines.

The Convid19 symptoms sound exactly the same.

Its very weird, mate. If it's a coincidence, it's a crazy one. But I have serious suspicions that this thing entered Europe much earlier than we suspected. Your symptoms sound more extreme than mine, but still, definitely unusual. My manager in work also spent around 1.5months flitting in and out of pretty heavy flu-like symptoms - she also says she's never been ill for that long with flu-like symptoms in her life. It's really weird.

The Dutch strategy that was announced an hour ago:

- No total lockdown
- Building a "controlled herd immunity"
- Trying to reduce peak demand on healthcare, in other words "flatten the curve"
- Isolate those in higher risk groups: elders and people with other health issues
What's the difference from what the British government are doing?

Can I just remind people how important it is to take a break from the information overload. It can be particular overwhelming and can affect your mood to be constantly reading these twitter 'facts and figures'.

Please take time out to relax. Do something you enjoy and stay rational and level-headed. When you want to read an article, scrutinise the source. Don't read too many articles at once.

Just a friendly reminder.

When they were explaining the strategy (on live television) I was literally thinking to myself "wait a sec...isn't this Britain's strategy?".
I was trying to work out where your government sits on the conservative-liberal, left-right spectrum and gave up because of all the random parties in government and opposition.

This is good advice. I won't be following it.

I genuinely don't know. During the whole speech I was thinking about the resemblance to Britain's strategy.
There is no difference and outside of the second point the rest makes total sense.

There was a chest virus that did the rounds between December to Feb, but I'm afraid it wasn't covid 19. Saw the name of it. If I find it I'll post it on here.

I've just been stuck in meetings all day discussing how cancer care will be affected by this and how to strategise delivering it. I come home, inform the relative bodies via email about what was discussed and what still needs to be discussed. Come on here onto this thread while channel 4 news is talking about plus a BBC tab open with the coronavirus.

I just thought, nah, sack this shit for a bit. Went and played Rocket League for a bit then prepped a steak dinner. Found it particularly cleansing to not think about it for a while. Thought I'd try to spread the feeling.

Best of luck in the Corona black hole!

Why do you feel like building a controlled herd immunity doesn't make sense? The Dutch leader regularly mentioned it's based on expert advice.

I'm not saying they're right/wrong, just curious why you think it doesn't make sense.

It's official; we're ending face to face lecturing with students on Friday. 22,000 students and about 1,000 staff will need to be able to work from home for what might be until the summer.

We've got the fun task of making sure everyone has a device to use at home and can access their Office 365 accounts, set up Teams, expand iLearn support and help get everyone onto remote desktops. Plus create training manuals and videos. We've been doing it for the last couple of weeks but still. Our colleagues have to make sure that the servers don't explode and they've all got the right access to shared drives. No pressure, just several thousand students wanting to graduate and not fail the year......

......feck.

Because experts have no idea about whether it's actually possible in the short term, we don't know how this virus work and one of the characterics of coronaviruses is their constent evolution. It's a speculative point, maybe it's possible, maybe it's not.

My partners grand father passed away last night with pneumonia and corona like symptoms.

They didn’t even test him for corona virus.

Good post.

I don't think it's helpful to anybody's mental health to fixate on facts, figures and potential outcomes. We all know this is serious, focussing on the outcomes has been a source of anxiety for me.

Sorry for you & your partners loss. It doesn't surprise me that people aren't being tested, it's like they're trying to massage the numbers, and equally they don't have the plan to sort out testing en masse.

Sorry to hear that, it could be the flu. My mum is a nurse and one of her patient got a really bad case of the flu, they really thought that it was the coronavirus.

Sorry to hear that, mate. You won't be the only one here having to cope with that

Where you from, by the way?

No difference.

Could it be that the govts are listening to scientific advice.

Anyway lets get back to cursing the British Govt as fools.
The dutch still face the same risk then, only difference is the Dutch government as far as I know don't have a recent history of making stupid decisions.

I think this is good advice. Read through a dozen pages of this thread before going to bed last night and my mind was racing.

Doesn't help that it's all people are talking about at work too.

I try and check this thread only twice a day. Otherwise i'd just be constantly refreshing and that seems like a really, really depressing idea.

I
Baby formula and nappies in my area completely sold out. Bare essentials for little babies and I imagine some King of Cnuts, or Cnut Overlord, or General Feck Head, or Cnuty McCnuterson, or whoever, is trying to sell them all on eBay right now.

People are wankers. Knackered wifey with two newborn bairns stood there gasping because there were no baby wipes. Had some in my boot that I keep as back up so she got those plus an unopened jumbo pack of newborn nappies that I forgot were in there. Only a four pack of wipes but hopefully that keeps her going for a week or so.

The moral of the story is that everyone's a cnut except me because I'm amazing
I’ve seen far too many new mums crying due to the fact there’s a lack of anything for babies. Me and the wife are trying to help as many people as we can but it’s getting harder
