Was thinking about this in slums across the entire planet. I have no idea how slum dwellers are meant to implement perfect hygiene protocols and social/physical distancing and self isolation.

When Convid19 reaches the huge slums of the Africa, Asia and Latin America, it will spread faster than wildfire, and then move very very quickly into the fancy neighbourhoods and beyond. At that point, no amount of bribery, ass kissing, influence or power will be able to save any person. For once, the 'haves' will really have to help the 'have nots', else they are all doomed.

Else, when the final math is done, its going to be the slum dwellers who die the most.

My only hope is that these people who have had to live their entire lives in unhygienic areas have developed the strongest immune systems on the planet. Its just my hope, and I hope I'm right, else when the final math is done on who died, it will be the poorest of the poor, who had nothing to do with its creation.
Good point, the rich pricks cannot even escape to foreign countries anymore as each countries has now closed its borders (or is in the process to). We all help each other or we all suffer together, rich people will get infected, that's without a doubt too

Has China even found patient zero? Considering they seem to find everyone, I find it hard to believe they cannot find him. I am sure a few million people in the world would like a quiet word with him.
Stop being an idiot

I dread to think what's gonna happen in Africa. There is possibility of having thousands and thousand dying everyday
I sincerely hope the warmer climate there is not very conducive to the survival of the virus outside a host and thus the infamous R0 rate will be significantly lower. Maybe I'm overly optimistic.

With all that that continent already has to contend with, I can only hope coronavirus doesn't get piled on top.

Yes, I think that "earliest" known case was pushed back to November, but wasn't sure so I kept to the latest info I had myself. I haven't looked into the beginning of the pandemic for about a week, so am not sure what progress is being made there (it seems more academic than practical right now - it will be important in the future to prevent similar things).

And yes, I know there was a missing link between the 1st December guy and the market.
I have been to China too and have good contacts and have been even to Wuhan a few years back. I have been to Bejjing and a few other cities too in the past. What you are saying is correct. China is fairly decentralised in most things. Even the health and Police are decentralised. Even taxation to some extents. The local governments are fairly powerful in their own way. Yes they all belong to the central party but have various degrees of autonomy. The information I got was this was a local issue where the Wuhan administrations messed things up. When Dr. Li reported this they never took him seriously. He then got together with some other doctors and started discussing this issue and the local police even threatened him.
This went up the chain to Beijing who had heard about this flu in Wuhan and send a team to investigate it. They also found that what Dr. Li had said was true and decided to investigate it further. In January they informed WHO and also wrote in the Lancet medical Journal who in turn informed the British Government about the article. The British government ignored the article. By January the whole World knew about this flu. The World had three months to get ready and most did not get ready and now blame the Chinese for them not being ready.
Viruses would come from all over the world and no one country should be blamed for any virus. All countries need to work together in the face of a common enemy like a pandemic.
It is pointless bashing one country. At least China is trying to help other countries by giving equipment and their doctors to help them.

Not true. Dr. Li Wenliang, from Wuhan, tried to warn his colleagues about an outbreak similar to SARS in late December after having treated multiple patients with unexplained pneumonia who visited the wet market. Instead of acting, the authorities summoned and disciplined him for spreading rumors and making "false" comments on the internet. He died of the virus a month later.
I would say at that time they didn't believe him and it wasn't until they did the research/testing that they found out he was right that this wasn't just a normal flu out break but something new and far more deadly.

I hope so, it's already above 30°C here and in the next couple of months we'll hit the 40s fairly regularly. We'll find out soon enough

What are the chances that the virus has mutated in Italy? The mortality rate there is insane.
I don't really think we can say anything about the mortality rate in Italy as we don't know how many actually infected people there are.

Supermarket play a role in this IMHO, I know in some places they limit the number of items allowed for certain things but greed will always prevail, some of them are rubbing their hands because they're exploding their profits.

The trains were empty this afternoon (West Yorkshire). Normally they'd be packed on a Saturday afternoon with people going/returing from shopping in Leeds or Bradford.
Same for me, started work for NHS at Leeds General Infirmary Thursday, been traveling back to Bradford and it’s been pretty quiet for me. Seems like most are paying attention but obviously some won’t. Saw a few but not a lot on public transport (My only way to get to work) I noticed it was all older people. I’ve seen some in this thread mention elderly getting on public transport and shopping. Gotta say based on the 4 buses and 2 trains I got, walking round Leeds, it was mostly older people sitting next to each other too.

No it doesn’t. It helps people know where it came from and how to prevent this from happening again.
I think accurately locating patient 0 isn't a great use of resources at the moment. Currently the global concentration needs to be on mitigating the spread and developing the vaccine.

Once it is under control, the investigations into how it spread/started should be conducted in order to learn lessons. It's just priorities.

Apparently nearly 600 died today in Lombardy alone. Italy will reach 800 today and will exceed 1,000 deaths per day within a week. This is shocking.
Italy, Spain and Iran are scary. It's heartbreaking to see the amount of people that are dying around the world of this. Everybody that dies is somebodies father, mother, uncle and aunt. I'm more scared about losing somebody that I care about than I am of dying myself and I don't think that I'm bulletproof in this as I have preexisting conditions or what ever it is that they call them.

A lot of registrar-level doctors I know now especially in hospital are twiddling their thumbs due to cancellation of outpatients. Wondering why we're not receiving PPE training, or training around looking after intubated patient on ventilator or anybody with COVID like symptoms. Now would be the perfect time to run through simulations etc but instead we're just waiting for the tidal wave in April where it will be chaotic and directly impact patient care.

Dont understand the penic buying. At most you self isolate for 2 weeks.

So day one go and buy 2 weeks worth of groceries. By day 8 you'll have ate a week, so go and buy another weeks worth.

You'll always have more or less 2 weeks stock on hand.

There's no call to buy a months worth of food every week. Its physically impossible to get through.

Some people are being asked to isolate for 12 weeks.

You need a ventilator for that

People are idiots though. I was in Sainsbury's yesterday and the toilet roll aisle was decimated, what was left? Boxes and boxes of Kleenex....for a respiratory virus...

Unless people cough out their arse, they're selfish morons.

This is exactly what is going to happen all over Europe starting in 1 or 2 weeks.
