Who were players that were regular starters in great/successful teams but were overshadowed by their teammates and perhaps didn't get the recognition they deserved. I probably wouldn't include someone like Park as he wasn't a regular starter for United.

I'll make an eleven

Was Joe Cole really unsung hero? In his time before injured, he was always very well known to be top player and the same with Carvalho.

Duff was slight unsung due to the players around him in Chelsea.

Ljungberg. Not really unsung but was definitely overshadowed by the likes of Henry, Pires and Vieira. He was an integral part of that team.

Our own Carrick was unsung by many casual United fans when he was playing. They said he only passed it sideways and backwards.

In fact, he was often the scapegoat for poor performances. It's only after Scholes retired that many casual Utd fans realised how important Carrick was to the team.

A never-nude? I thought he just liked cut-offs.

Good shout. Heavy pro-Irish bias here on my part but I thought he was better than Joe Cole for Chelsea and I wish he'd signed for Utd instead.

For Sacchi and Capello-era Milan, Donadoni never seems to get a mention as it's all about that defence and the three Dutch legends, but he was crucial for them as a dribbling and playmaking outlet. Ancelotti was just before my time, but from watching some of their matches lately he looked a far better player than I'd assumed he was. Senna was understated brilliant for Spain in Euro 08.

Yeap. It was so sad back then.

Oh well, his team mates knew and often praised him. Even Pep and Xabi Alonso highlighted the key roles of Carrick.

David Villa ?
Often his teammates with Spain and Barca were being praised more than him.

Willian ?
Good call. He won everything there was to win for Barca, slotted in brilliantly as a Messi sidekick, yet the most high-profile period of his career almost detracts from how great he was as the main striker for Valencia and Spain. Brilliant player.

No way he was an unsung hero. He was rated highly back then and one of the top striker in his time even in Barcelona. Giuly was probably more an unsung hero if I have pick one in Barcelona's attackers.

Piracy on the High Seas.
• Jair da Costa for Herrera's Internazionale: worked incredibly hard, but the defense + architect Suárez + golden boy Mazzola received most of the plaudits.
• Alberigo Evani for Sacchi's Milan: quality player but perpetually in the shadow of not just the GOATs, but Colombo/Donadoni on the flanks as well. Ditto Marco Simone.
• Gianluca Pessotto for Lippi's Juventus: went about his business without a lot of fanfare, most of the adulation was reserved for others.
• Claudio Makelélé for the Galáctico period, obviously: ushered out of the clubs by Pérez and many supporters foolishly reckoned he would be easily replaced.

Tempted to include Clodoaldo for 1970 Brazil: energetic presence behind his more illustrious counterparts, mostly an afterthought in the grand scheme of things. That being said practically any balancing-act midfielder would be overlooked in the company of Pelé, Gérson, Jairzinho, Tostão, Rivelino.
Maybe Keylor Navas for contemporary Madrid as he was the unfortunate victim of internal politicking despite saving their bacon many a time over the years, but he was well liked by a ton of fans and received a lot of individual awards/nominations (like 4 x FIFPro Squad member), so I'm not sure.

P.S. When you think about it, certain positions/characteristics/personalities are fundamentally conducive to unsung hero categorization — like water carriers or understated conduits or multi-purpose grafters or fullbacks that don't make significant statistical contributions. Hard to be truly remarkable or memorable in a lot of system-based roles along those lines.

Seydou Keita made 188 appearances for Peps Barca over four seasons. Could always be relied on and offered a great alternative to the Spanish midfielders when needed.

Agreed. Rarely mentioned but he was a quality player

Paul Parker. Abit of a opinionated knob nowadays but he was a great little player himself.

Sergio Busquets tends to go under the radar a bit, despite being to say the least, massively important for Barcelona.

Not unlike the Carvalho/Terry dynamic, I thought Keown was overshadowed by his central defensive partner Adams. He seemed to be a more diligent defender, a niggly man-marker who went about his business relatively quietly, whereas Adam was all vocal leadership and lunging tackles. Although Adams was a superior overall package, Keown had purer defensive instincts.

Always felt comfortable when he was selected. He was quick, read the game brilliantly and was a good enough footballer to play in midfield when needed.

His flexibility and reliability got us through those difficult run of games to seal the treble but you never hear much about him nowadays.

I know that Ferguson himself felt he was as good as Stam, and was only held back by injuries. He said that if he remained fit “you will not get a better centre half in the country”

Injuries ended up curtailing his time at the club but his role in that great team is definitely understated.

Navas wasn’t very good.
That back 4 wasn’t underrated at all.
I don’t know anything about Marchisio so you may be right on that one!
Martinez and Wijnaldum are not underrated.
Pedro was rated pretty correctly (although I still think he was carried a bit)
Luca Toni was an average striker who scored a fair few goals.
Guily I’ll agree with you.

I don’t know, great players usually get recognised. Unsung heroes are probably unsung for a reason.

Antonello Cuccureddu. More than 300 games for Juve, 6 Serie A titles, played in every position aside from goalkeeper's and was a part of one of the greatest defences in club football:
Cabrini - Scirea - Gentile - Cuccureddu
Zoff
Average lost goal per game in Series A : 0.67, Clean Sheet Ratio : 0.52 (78/150)

In fact, that Juventus side of the 70's/early 80's has a lot of underrated players, as that team got way more spotlight after Platini came in: Cuccureddu, Causio (), Furino, Brady.

Interesting thread. I would say a number of those players were well rated though and I wouldn't see them as unsung heroes. Carvalho, Abidal, Silva especially.

A player who comes to mind: John McGovern. Played under Brian Clough at Derby County and Nottingham Forest. Reckon his name was 1st on Cloughy's teamsheet every week. As was not the case for his record signing Trevor Francis.
