I liked it. I really like the lead guitar, it wasn't technical but the note choice, feel and use of effects really complimented the sludge metal kind of rhythm parts. I got a lot of sludge vibes from it but mixed with Scandinavian prog rock/metal on the clean parts through the vocals and clean guitars, kind of like Opeth or Katatonia.

How did the guitarist achieve that really long feedback note to bridge the sections of the song from 1.59? I loved that.

The mixing didn't sound right to me though, the vocals were lost in the mix at times.
Thanks for the input! I'm glad you like it, it's a very special song for me personally besides being our first "single" and all that. It's an honor the comparisons to Opeth (my fav band ever) and katatonia. Definitively we're influenced by the genre.

Actually i wrote the song and play the lead guitar in that section (you can hear my guitar in the right channel the whole song), aaaand i sing hehe. Yeah the mix still needs to be masterized and fix some volumes here and there before we upload to spotify.

The feedback is achieved by an E-bow which is a device that makes the string vibrate for ever and it makes it feedback a lot creating atmospheric noises. I use a lot in our songs!

I think that is what Guthrie Govan uses on the solo on Drive Home with Steven Wilson isn't it? I think I'll have to get one!

Ok fine if you insist :D

This post caught my interest, since I'm a massive fan of both Opeth and Katatonia, but I didn't really get that from the song. I got a sort of post-metal vibe, sort of like the more chilled out moments of ISIS, with a Pink Floyd-ish solo, which was great btw. I liked the way the song build up to that, ala post rock, then tore it down before kicking in with a cool riff.

ISIS came to mind too when I heard it. For me though, the parts with the clean guitar and vocals sounded like Opeth and Katatonia.

I actually thought the drums were quite reminiscent of early Katatonia tbf. Nice and simple, just serving the song rather than doing anything too technical.

Here's a good record I've had on lately. Sort of Tool, sort of Porcupine Tree.

Which reminds me, anyone heard the new Tool song?

I really like it after one listen. It's pretty deep Tool in fairness, a lot of groove, kind of like Lateralus era. Maynard sings a bit like he does on APC in it too. I hope that he does more of that on the new album as he has a fantastic haunting singing voice.

Yeah I got Lateralus from it too. As always with Tool, it'll need a few listens but early impressions are good!

Love it. Same old Tool - better with every listen. Shades of a lot of earlier songs - Reflection was the one I was instantly reminded of.

The production is also great.

Me and my band just released a second demo. Thinking of releasing an EP this year. Opinions greatly appreciated. Please consider the mix is not masterized yet so it might sound a little raw on headphones, but on speakers the sound quality is great :)

I haven't listened to any of the tracks posted, but weren't Rush doing this in the 70s?

They provided a link from Glam Rock, to a Power Trio, through Progressive Rock, Techno Rock and beyond.

They were bigging up Dream Theatre when they first appeared on the scene in the mid to late 80s.

Can't say Dream Theatre were ever my cup of tea, tbf.

I'd actually say Dream Theater were the first prog metal band. They took prog rock (Rush) and merged it with Metallica to form something new. They're not my cup of tea either in fairness, and neither are Rush, but I think they took it somewhere new when they came on the scene.

Animals As Leaders is insane technically. Exivious has a touch of that as well though it's more like metal-fusion.
Good stuff. I've listened to some Textures before but haven't got deep into their music. Personally I have AAL down as a fusion metal band. They are kind of underpinned by that djent prog metal style but they incorporate a broad range of genres and styles into their sound, even if it might not be on top of it. I do like Matt Garska as a drummer. I like these two videos he did with Josh De La Victoria. The first is a more technical piece time signature wise and the second a bit heavier and relatively straight forward. For this kind of music I really like to see the musicians at work and in HQ sound. AAL's official videos for their new album seem to feature conceptual dance pieces but I much prefer the playthrough videos.

Textures I rather like - although I have to admit most of it is based on a cursory listen to their work; I only actually have one album of them. But I like the general vibe at least; a band like Meshuggah (also djent, or in the same corner anyway) is too 'brutal' to me, I can't listen to that sort of music very long. Textures fits me better. Also Gojira for that matter, but that's not djent anymore, just rather technical.

Yeah, good point, Animals As Leaders also have a strong jazz sensitivity in their music. Probably also modern classical music. I don't know much about people like Reich, but from what I know, I think AAL probably appreciate him as well. (And 90s/00s King Crimson - or maybe King Crimson had the same influences underpinning their own metal(ish) turn.)

I like when the interesting part is in the rhythm. I have poor harmonic hearing, so a lot of what supposedly makes jazz interesting escapes me (Oh, they jump from a C#2sus6 to a Eb9? Well now!), but I really like having to figure out how the rhythm hangs together. Although in general I find most long-winded instrumental music hard to really listening to. It's great for in the background, but hard to follow through for me. I agree that being able to see the actual playing is great though - I like your Meinl Cymbals videos! (Sounds a lot like AAL and Exivious as well.) Where do they get the bass, keyboards, and second guitar from though? All on tape? (Booh!)

I was thinking And So I Watch You From Afar is another instrumental band that might fit this thread. They're not grounded in metal like most other bands here (their drum sound and style clearly come from rock, for example), but they make hard and loud and complex instrumental music. To be honest, I can only really enjoy this as background music, but then it's the same for virtually all heavy, complex instrumental music for me, so what do I know. :D

@Classical Mechanic - this might be a bit simple for you, but I think you might like it. I just noticed your Felix Martin post on the previous page and I'm listening to that, and it sounds a bit similar conceptually with the endless succession of arpeggios.

I did enjoy it. It kind of had some (what I would call) skater punk vibes. I used to hang around with a lot of skaters when I was a youth so I immediately thought of that time. I thought the production was off a bit though. It had a kind of hypnotic quality to the repetitive musical motifs which I enjoyed.

Not sure if I shouldn't take the skater punk as an insult!

Anyway, I personally don't here that at all in ASIWYFA. More generally, I don't hear punk in them - although they probably like hardcore. (Which I am saying just on the basis of having listened to Fvcked Up a lot this week. :D ) To me, they are rather some kind of heavy stoner-ish version of Mogwai. Their songs do vary a fair bit though; maybe I picked a bad example.

Skater punk is not an insult. One of my best mates from school was well into this scene and is a talented drummer. Back in the early 00's I remember they set up a band setup in his conservatory whilst his mum and dad were away and did a gig for us at a party in there. It was pretty incredible as they were more advanced players than we were used to hearing. They were more hardcore than the link I posted. That was the first time I heard Eminem too as they were obsessed with his first album.

Speaking of Hardcore. I thought Code Orange's most recent album kind of fell into the progressive realm.

I was kidding about the insult bit. :) Skater punk just seems pretty far away from prog - but I listen to everything. Well, everything I like. ;) But it's pretty varied, including punk.
