Two weeks away and too many are jumping the gun on line ups and such.

A few things to consider include: the weather, friendly matches before the restart, and fixture congestion.

Hopefully nobody gets serious knocks during any potential friendly, but need to exert themselves in order to build some match fitness and not too off the pace when it matters starting with Spurs. Looking at Bundesliga as the main reference point, more players will be subbed around the 55th to hour mark to ease some players back in and/or for tactical reasons. Plus, it's going to be fecking warm. So cramp will be an issue, especially as the players do not have the same pre and post game preparation and recovery due to social restrictions.

Pogba starting and knocking either Fred or Scott out is the big decision here. Pressure on Ole to back the big name and add to the hype but it’s rough justice on whomever he drops.

In other news, Daniel James looks like first choice RW when we have a full squad available. I like the lad but we really need to strengthen in that area.

LB and CB also big calls to be made.

Two weeks is such a long time to have to wait.

Il go for something different and say that Ole plays Fred & Bruno Fernandes in centre midfield due to Bruno's defensive ability whilst playing Pogba as an AM or
All 3 in a flat 433 with Bruno & Pogba taking alternatives to attack the half spaces in midfield one at a time.

    Rashford- Martial -Greenwood
    Pogba
    Fred- Bruno Fernandes

    Or

    Rashford-Martial- Greenwood
    Pogba-Fred- Bruno
This is a big waste of Bruno, instead of using him in attack where he was our best player in the few matches he played we'll be wasting him in doing defensive work.

Just play with the formation we were playing before the season stopped. If Pogba wants to play he has to prove himself from the bench. Fred and Scott have provided a great combination defensively and Bruno was our best player as I said.

With Pogba back, I believe Ole will begin the restart with the same 4-2-3-1 he opened the season with in a 4-0 vs Chelsea.

    de Gea
    Wan Bissaka Bailly Maguire Shaw
    McTominay Pogba
    Greenwood Fernandes Rashford
    Martial

I see that too, the first one is just me just wondering if that could be played but couldn't Pogba, Fred & Bruno Fernandes play in a flat midfield 3 with the ability to take the CAM spot off each other ( Pogba or Bruno) depending on where the space opens?

I say this because when Bruno was playing for us last time - we didnt have Rashford and so Martial had to lead the line as our main and only goal scorer. Now that Rashford is back and if he can play with Greenwood, Martial can play a bit deeper as a false 9 potenitally trying to interlink the clinical strikers playing wider off him but also 2 great passers and long range shooters playing behind him too.

    A bit like this.

    Rashford- ------ - ------- -Greenwood
    Martial

    Pogba-Bruno Fernandes
    Fred

The creativity is there, it's just that if Pogba sees the space in AM then Bruno stays in Midfield whilst using Martial as a 1-2 support/Pivot player. The same with Bruno Fernandes, if he sees the space, Pogba stays back.

Has everyone forgotten about the shit that Pogba and his agent have dished out in the last year. No way he should start. Keep him on the bench.

Not really. Maybe in terms of fitness but otherwise it's a pretty simple and straight forward decision. Everyone from Ole, players, fans and pundits know that a fit Pogba would be part of the starting line up. The harder decision is who joins him and Bruno to complete the midfield.

I know all of Fred, Scott and Matic have improved which is massive and a great thing for us but any manager out there will always be looking to field his best players when they are available.

Yeah, if everyone is fit and Rashford is ready to start the game. Will be interesting to see if Pogba and Bruno step on each other's toes as happened with Sanchez and Pogba.
Pretty much. Don't know how it would impact the setup though but Ole isn't dropping Fred or McT . That's his base to build the attacking play.

All true, but none of this indicates based on the situation as it stands that we'll be starting anything less than our 'best xi', whatever people might think that is. If someone gets injured, I'm sure people will adjust their predictions accordingly. So no-one's really jumping the gun.

    I’m guessing

    De Gea
    Wan Bissaka Lindelöf Maguire Shaw
    Fred Pogba
    James Bruno Rashford
    Martial

James the hardest guess, Mata, Lingard, Greenwood and Pereira all options. (Yes, we must bloody well strengthen RW)

in attack, it will look something like this

    De Gea
    Lindelöf Maguire
    Wan Bissaka Fred Shaw
    James Bruno Pogba
    Martial Rashford

No chance we suddenly start playing Bailly. Lindeløf is 100% certain to start. Dont think Greenwood is starting either

    Come on now

Any manager would be thinking to build their attacking play around the likes of Pogba and Bruno in midfield if available, not Fred and Scott. One of them will have to drop or even both if Ole deems it's necessary to play a sitting midfield in Matic.

Pogba has always played in a deep double pivot under Ole. It's bizarre that some people think he's going to start higher.

I’m not sure we will see such an adventurous set up against Tottenham. I haven’t been impressed with Jose’s team, they have been slow and insipid on the ball whenever I have watched them but they will be really up for this. Now that Kane and Son are back, they will fancy there chances. We are excited to see Bruno and Pogba play together but I’m not sure this is the game to try it.

Fitness permitting, I think Ole will opt for a more pragmatic approach and I will go against other line ups here and say we will play a 3-5-2/5-3-2.

    De Gea

Wan Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Shaw, Williams

    Fred, Matic, Fernandes

    Martial, Rashford.

The game plan would be to stay tight and compact, let Spurs have the ball but try to cut off supply to Kane and Alli around the box, win the ball back and use our quick breaks to exploit their slow backline. We then have a number of ways to change the game with players such as Pogba, James and McTominay who can come on.

Spurs start slow every season and this is practically the first game so im expecting an easier than expected win.

Don't know, the way Lindelof got turned by Greenwood in training the other day makes me think he may have played himself out of the starting lineup. He won't be able to handle Kane.

Feels like I hear something similar before every match against a top 4-6 teams. "We'll get thumped", "X player won't be able to handle Y player from team Z" etc. Yet things never pan that way.

Good to have the matchday thread back. Really looking forward to see us back in action. It'll be interesting to see what Ole goes with. Hopefully we can pick up where we left off.

I don't understand why anyone thinks Pogba will or should start on the bench. It's been the same from day one. If Pogba's fit he starts. I personally don't see that changing.

More than likely he'll play as part of a 2 in a 4231 with Fernandes as AM.

It will be interesting to see what Ole does goes with and how the 5 subs affects things.

Pre lockdown I was confident of a big win. Now it’s all unknown. They have, Kane, Son and Bergwijn back.
Who the hell is he ? Have I been asleep that long that I have forgotten star players ?

Edit. We are + rashford and Pogba so feck them when has Kane ever had a good game v us ?

High on confidence and at an empty stadion, I think Ole will look to dominate the game, which could imply Mata instead of James. I don´t expect to see 5 at the back.

    ....................De Gea

Bissaka - Lindeløf- Maguire - Shaw

    ........... Pogba - Matic

    Mata - Fernandes - Rashford

    ............. Martial

From my recollection he has scored 2; one at White Hart Lane in 2016/17, and one at OT in 2018/19 (when Mourinho completely lost the plot post-match).

His record against us has generally been very poor though; more bad games than good ones.

Really interesting watch. I thought intensity looked really poor at the start, but I've never actually seen a training game before so that could be normal. Thought Son looked really sharp, while Kane looked extremely sluggish.
Even if the low intensity is normal for training games like this, it just makes me more convinced that the way to win this will be to hit them very hard and very fast early on. They haven't played a game for a long time and they don't look like they're preparing for it particularly, at least so far. Compare to the little half-pitch games we've seen in almost every United training video so far, with absolutely no space and almost instant closing down.

Even if a couple of players exhaust themselves in the first half we can make a couple of changes at half time and a few more throughout the rest of the match. It's worth it. Mourinho teams do not recover well once you've got your goal. They are set up to win from the foundation of a clean sheet.

It'll be great to see the team playing again. I just want to see Pogba and Fernandes in tandem in midfield.

It’s the first game, Pogba can wait to start, we knew what worked before lockdown, don’t change It in the first game.

    ———————martial———————-
    Rashford——-Bruno————James
    ——-Mctominay——Fred—————
    ———————-Back 5———————-

Greenwood, Pogba and Ighalo to come on depending on game necessity.

Trust is key and I trust this team in terms of work-rate and cutting edge.

Control the first 70 and annihilate them with our subs. I’m sure Pogba wants to pay mourning back also..

No Lindelof or Bailly in the United training game has me a little concerned.

But it's a two week gap to the Tottenham game, so hopefully there'll be another match next week for them to make their case.
