Arguably one of the POTS candidates imo, i find it a bit weird that he didn't get a chance to come off the bench last night, especially since B&HA were getting momentum and he sure as hell is a better option to have than Pereira in those moments.
It's important that we get players back to match fitness.

Fred played 80mins on Saturday and no doubt he will be involved in some capacity this weekend against Bournemouth.

Although Pereira isn't great but we will need him for the rest of the season when we have games coming up thick and fast, he hasn't been given much game time since lockdown and he has now taken Lingards spot in the squad so he will get more mins to build his fitness up to ensure he'd be ready when called up.

I get what you mean but then again Bruno played the whole game against Norwich and he started last night. I get that he's one of our best players and that Ole can't gamble as much, but Fredo is probably one of our most fit players.

Fred had built up confidence and momentum, but now he's back to being a bit part player, not sure that suits him.

Exactly the point..Fred is one of our most fittest players so he probably doesn't need as much game time to get back to his normal standards.

It's all about getting the squad back to match fitness and Ole is trying to rotate as much as he can without impacting on the results.

Think the reason you’re seeing McTom/Andreas get the minutes off the bench as opposed to thread currently is maturity.

Them being named to the bench game after game with no time will demoralise them more where as Fred just comes across as willing to do the job when required.

Hopefully he’ll get some minutes vs Bournemouth.

But mate, is Pereira really that important squad player? He's easily at the bottom of the pecking order.

Fred has proved me wrong this season. I didn't think he was up for it and I agree that he's been our Player of the Season with the exception of Bruno. Game before last when he was subbed out (tottenham game i think) I thought he was one of the best players on the pitch.

Our midfield is crowded but probably about perfect for a team expecting to play over 50 games per year. Having Bruno, Matic and Pogba as the current starters and Fred, Mctominay and Mata (although often played RW) as our next batch of midfielders make for a deep part of our team and this group's excellent play has made the entire game much easier for our Defenders and Attackers. Under previous coaches, the midfield struggled I thought and was simply subpar under Jose and certainly LVG.

That said, I'm not set on Matic as the starter although he's had a good run of form. I think Fred and McTom can make a play for that position even though they'd both likely be better suited as players that are more free to roam up the field.

Fred is average at best and average for United is just not good enough in my humble opinion. He would be a decent player in a mid table outfit but we are talking Manchester United Football Club here and he is in,possibly aside from the goalkeeper maybe and a centre forward, the most important position on the field, centre of midfield and to think of the players we've had there over the years, the likes of Bryan Robson,Paul Scholes,Roy Keane, well let's face it,he cannot lace their boots now can he...

I have a funny feeling if we get another midfielder like Grealish he’ll be sold.

Hes not competing with Matic or McTominay for the #6, and as a #8 hes never getting ahead of Pogba or Bruno. Chuck in someone like Grealish and it’d be looking bleak for his game time.

He probably just had a rest because he was so average against Spurs. Maybe he needs a bit more training to get sharp again

Some very short memories on here. Best midfielder before lockdown, incredibly consistent all season.

He should be the man rotating with Matic. Which means that although Matic may be the best option, they should really be getting around 50/50 game time because Matic is only good if you rest him a lot to keep him fresh.

We are playing with 3 midfielders every game. There is place for more than 4 in the squad.

Lingard, Mata and Pereira would be much more dispensable if Grealish comes.

We play with 3 every game and currently have 5 who I’d say are first team - Matic, Bruno, Pogba, McTominay and Fred.

Not even counting Mata/Lingard/Andreas who I think we’d happily get rid if we can.

If we sign another midfielder I.E. Grealish you’d imagine Fred drops to 6th choice, and I don’t see him wanting that.

I think Fred is second choice to Pogba. I don't know why he hasn't featured much but he's a better box to box than Mctominay and I think Ole sees that too. When Pogba was injured and when Bruno came the starting midfield trio was Bruno Matic and Fred while Mctominay was on the bench. Mctominay only started against Brugge, Lask and Derby County.

That said I think the plan is to make Mctominay Matic's replacement. So if we get Grealish it would be.

First choice midfield
....... Bruno......

Matic.......Pogba

Second choice midfield
...... Grealish.....

Mctominay..... Fred

I hope he regains his pre lockdown form even with the changes.
Problem is, he’s a player that needs to be starting every game (or most) and it’s going to be difficult for him to displace any of Matic, Pogba or Bruno as a first choice starter right now.

Doubt wed pay 50m for Grealish to come sit on the bench behind Bruno who won’t get dropped.

He’d rotate in with Pogba and Bruno. I agree Fred is probably viewed as a box to box, but he’d be 4th pick behind them and he won’t play as the #6.

I don't imagine Pogba being dropped either though.

Unlucky to be benched. The whole thing just moves smoothly with him in midfield

For me he seems trapped between starting quality and squad player. To good to be just squad player but not good enough to start.

Its great having this kind of "problems"

I've been abit worried how we would play from the back and defensively without Matic. This guy came on and has cleared my doubts for now. He's on the bench now but he can displace Matic who can't play every game

We haven't seen him with Pogba and Fernandes before today. I like Matic but it would be interesting to see him from the start with them as he provides more urgency which is sometimes needed when we start as slow as today.
