What I have found slightly strange in the predictions of top 4 has been the overrating of Chelsea. They have been as inconsistent as us this season without the same excuses of injuries which we have had all season. The fact is Utd are a different beast with Pogba and Fernandes in the team, combined with an ever improving Greenwood and a fit and firing Martial max Rashford. It’s only natural that when we have everyone fit our fortunes will turn, whereas with Chelsea they are just the same as all season. Makes little sense to me.

After watching them last night they could drop points in any game. As long as we do our job we should be getting 3rd.
Any team with a good counter attack could have got a result there.

Think our cup game is going to be a interesting watch because if they attack we'll counter and if they sit back Bruno and Pogba will hopefully pen them in.

The only worry is the counter from them as Pulisic looked really good.

He's come on massively.

Pulisic
Werner
Ziyech

That could be very good.

7 games(so far) is almost 2 out of 9 months. That's lengthy, imo.

The bottom line is that we've spent the majority of the season with a severely weakened team. Ole isn't given enough credit for how we've managed to stay in the battle for 4th(or even 3rd).
Exactly. This without considering the games needed to get back into form (like for example now).

Just imagine if all the people who got a 2nd mortgage on their house to place a bet on United to finish top 4. If we lose just 1 or 2 games, top 4 could be 100% done and dusted. I know a guy who was stupid enough to get a second mortgage so he could get. Idiots.
I put in a decent amount for a bet but not mortgage sized.. how much did they put?

Which makes it all the more frustrating that we didn't sign Bruno in the summer.

Fa cup is a fixed date, one of the palace or West Ham games will be moved forward. If our challengers get points on the board we will be under enormous pressure.
We play our challenger Chelsea int he FA cup.

Won't be surprised if we lose or drop points in the next two games. Since Ole joined, most times we've had the chance to close the gap on the top four, we dropped points. It happened many times last season, and I thought there was something wrong with the team mentally. I hope it doesn't happen again.

I'm not that concerned about Pulisic as he plays on the left wing. I'm a lot more confident he'll have to deal with Wan Bissaka as opposed to Shaw.

That's why some people are saying it's his first real test, while that may not be true in terms of fixtures, it's a test in regards to taking advantage and getting us into those CL places and staying there until the end.

but last season we had poor tactics and no system (let alone worse squad).

As we all know at this moment in time and indeed in future weeks too , there are going to be some surprising results because that is the way Football works especially with teams fighting to stay in the Premiership and that. Of course United's fixtures do look favourable and like many other poster,I feel that the top 4 is pretty much a certainty now as Leicester seem in complete free-fall and cannot seem to buy a win at present. I would be delighted like most supporters I suspect to make the Champions League positions though also at the same time I am not losing sight of the fact we seem to be competing for 3rd or 4th place now whereas we laughed out loud when the Scousers' were aiming for those places a few years back. Next Season , we have to and I mean have to start well and try to make sure we compete every week against both the lesser teams as well as the better ones and with maybe three top class and I mean top class signings in the Bruno Fernandes mould then perhaps we can challenge for the top honours once more, I am hopeful though if you were asking me to put money on us finishing above say City and Liverpool,I would have to decline

The round of 16 games will be played in the original stadium, but apparently without crowd.

Top 4 could realistically depend on goal difference vs Leicester.
Unfortunately, it seems they'll be ahead of us in GD unless we give them a proper beating in the last round.
We have 5 games before we play them to eat into that 9 goal difference. I think we can do it.

We made up four goals on them just in the week 32 matches. If we win out, and the Foxes drop any other points, then it becomes a moot point, anyway. That's a comforting thought. And it's not like Wolves are suddenly going to start scoring goals for fun.

I called it with Chelsea early on that their form would fade due to the inconsistency of their younger players. 500 points to me. I think we're a better team than them with everyone fit but they have better depth. Leicester fumbling so badly has been more of a surprise. I also think the break has actually benefitted Chelsea a lot so see Leicester as the most viable target now.

I think it's in our hands really. If we get the results the likelyhood of both Chelsea and Leicester not slipping up at all is extremely low. I think the biggest if is still over whether we can get the results to take advantage. As good as our form has been things can still change quite quickly. We're only ever an injury or two away from Lingard.

Our current situation has some parallels with last season. Out of top 4 by a mile then that amazing run of games while all the teams around us spontaneously combust and bring us within distance of a respectable finish. The team can redeem themselves from that late season collapse by seeing this one through on a positive note

Exactly, this is a mental exercise for us, preparing us for future greatness implies us being able to overcome those runs.

Love the positivity but it will only take a draw at the weekend and it’ll be back to “Ole out, sack Woodward”!

Well let's just hope we don't stumble again when there's finally something to play for. We've only had a million false dawns since Fergie retired. Anyway it will take more than a single draw to knock us out of the running

Given the fixtures, form, and scheduling, my feeling is that win the next 5 and we can go into the last match only needing a draw to secure a top 4 place.

But in general, 3 points off 3rd with the 4th best GD and 6 matches left - after the depths we've hit this season - is hard to complain about

Don't we already have a top 4 race thread? This thread is a bit embarrassing tbh. We're happy the team is doing well but we're still miles behind where we should be.
Are you happy when We are still talking about "hands" there, instead of talking about remining fixtures?

It all hinges on whether we can maintain momentum. This season has shown us that when we are given a chance, we don't often capitalise.

Also, we appear to have an easy run in but it's actually very hard, those are teams we really struggle against.
I feel we're a different team with a different mentality and understanding to where we were months ago. It's not just direct Bruno inspiration - we were, in a way, slowly improving before he arrived, and it has come together clearer in the players heads where we are going.

Completely agree about the teams we normally struggle with, but suddenly we look capable against them. That is the direct conequence of the injection of quality, and overstressing oppposition defences with enough credible threats we now have.

Where we should be as I predicted in the start of the season. Our fans underrated the quality of our squad as if they just started watching football yesterday. You don’t have one of the most expensive team in the world and not finish top four at least. Our manager must be really incompetent or has lost the dressing room for that to happen
You more than likely predicted Ole to be sacked by now than a 3rd place finish under his watch.

Expensive doesn't count for much especially when you have a clueless Woodward over paying for players.
If United had such a quality squad they wouldn't have struggled as much early/mid season with injuries. To finish in the top 4 right now it will come down to keeping the majority of the current XI fit until the end of the season.

Updated OP.

Wolves are out of the race.

Chelsea have two hard fixtures remaining, as do Leicester. Odds are that both teams will lose at least one of their last two games.

Counting on Liverpool to return the favour and smash Chelsea after we beat City. If it goes as predicted, there's a good chance we comfortably finish third. Or we all mess up and finish on 66 points.

We will go the season unbeaten I reckon, but we will (need to) win both.

This isn't just us getting CL for me, we need to show Leicester, Chelsea, and the rest we're back & heading to the top next season.

No compromises
