Commentators just mentioned the investigation into their engine which coincided with them not taking poles anymore. They were definitely up to something a bit fishy.

Yup, it seems like whatever “trick” they used to get that extra power from the engine was decided by the FIA was on the grey area. Maybe not outright cheat, or maybe it was. But it means they are miles slower than they were last year. That Hungary update better give them a new engine power boost otherwise they are fecked.

Happy with that. Hopefully Norris can do the same in the race tomorrow.

Pretty bummed by just how far the Mercs are ahead. Pleased for Bottas, hopefully he puts up a fight this year. Pleased for Norris too.

Over half a second ahead on a minute long track though. Jeez.

No doubt about that, but you’d think an updated Ferrari with the same power level as everyone else would at least be closer than a second off pole.

Oh well, they wouldn’t beat Merc anyway and adding one more team to the midfield battle is hopefully going to give us even more great racing.

The Ferrari is looking so weak this year. Not sure if this track is highlighting their weak spots, which just seems to be flat out pace, but even if so they are in for a bad couple of races... At least.

It's only weak because they're not exceeding the fuel flow limits that they were doing last year.

Lewis is under investigation for not slowing down, when yellow flags were out could get a grid pen.
No further action because "the video footage confirmed that there have been yellow flags and green light panels at the same time and therefore conflicting signals were shown to the driver". Do think it ought to be the rule that if there are conflicting signals then you take the safest option - in this case the yellow flag - but the stewards are right to not penalise him. He did lose one lap time for exceeding track limits, still P2 though.
Right about what?
He called out Ferrari for cheating last year and they kicked up a massive stink about him doing so as the link provided by @F-Red shows. And after the confidential settlement with the FIA during the off-season, all Ferrari cars are between 0.6-1.2 seconds slower than last year.

Not great for competitiveness that Mercedes are so far ahead again. But Red Bull might catch up if they create their own DAS, but in the meantime, it's cool to see McLaren and Racing Point getting into the mix at the top. And can't forget about Ferrari either. Just the first race's qualifications of course, but here's hoping this means things will be mixed up a bit more this year.

Well Ferrari's shambles was to be expected, but Red Bull was making all kinds of noises during preseason, yet they are a mile away. fecking hell, another Mercedes domination is coming. I wouldn't mind it if Merc actually had a strong driver next to Lewis like Rosberg was. But Bottas is just beyond useless (yes I know he got pole, means feck all).

Gotcha. Thanks - totally missed that last year. Indeed sounds like Max was on to something there.

Bit curious to see the RBs slightly off pace as well though but with Albon high up on the grid as well there is not much to complain about at the moment. Think it's way too soon to consider the RPs and McLaren contenders yet - so far we have seen nothing to prove the reliability of any of them or the ones further down the pack. Either way - aside from Mercedes possibly making the winner predictable, it looks to be an exciting season. Surely this is one of the most talented lineups of drivers across the board in a long time.

Wow Ferrari are pathetic. Makes it so hard to watch. How can a team so big not even win the Constructors for over a decade? They need a serious reshuffle of the team from top to bottom.

I had a dream three drivers died following collisions. Stroll, Massa, and Glock. Would be insane if it came to fruition.

I’m delighted (as a McLaren fan) for Norris to qualify 4th. Excellent effort, and again shows steady performance increase of that car. Hopefully they can fight with RP & Ferrari for 3rd best car this year.

Merc completely dominant, their 1 lap pace is insane.

I don’t expect them to be as far ahead on race pace though, and I actually think Max will be a total pain in the arse for them, starting on the mediums (masterstroke by RB strategists imo). If he goes long, with decent pace (his medium race pace run was v strong on Friday) then sticks on the softs for a series of quali laps at the end, he could spoil the party for Merc (I’m predicting he splits them).

Ferrari. Wow. I knew they were taking down their chances, but that’s pretty embarrassing. They’re nearly a second down on last years’ quali times! I think it’s pretty strong clarification that they were up to something with that engine last year.

Other things to note - Ocon & Latifi were miles off the pace of their teammates. Didn’t expect that from Ocon. Ricciardo didn’t even get his last run in properly.

GRID PENALTY FOR LEWIS HAMILTON?

Well, this could be huge... it looks like Hamilton has been handed a three-place grid penalty in Austria, as Red Bull are setting up on the front row of the grid!

what a crock of shit !!

so what was the difference form yesterday to day ?
Pressure from Red Bull and Ferrari apparently
Red Bull issued the petition, they felt there was camera angles that weren't reviewed and they will benefit the most from a review. It concluded to be the correct decision, why the stewards didn't review the 360 degree camera from Hamilton's car yesterday is beyond me. He was flat through a yellow flag.

To be fair it was the right call and should have been made yesterday. Smart my Red Bull wait till last minute for a review.

Anyway interesting both Max and Leclerc have tweeted they won’t be kneeling. Now being turned in to Lewis shammed then in to doing it. Surprised by to be honest gonna look bad on camera if Lewis is only one kneeling while the whiter drivers all stand.
