Don't know if it's just me, but I've seen a lot of "new" or rather popular football terminology being used of late that just gets passed on to the next poster and the next, sometimes because it sounds clever using it, while sometimes not actually knowing what it really means.

The latest ones being banded around are:

1. Generational talent

2. Press resistant

3. His, our their "xG" (this one is not so much latest, but used frequently by some who don't quite know how to use it properly)

4. World class (more outdated now since everyone and his mum has been world class before turning back to shite. The new in word is no1 on my list)

5. Double Pivot. (It's Paul Pogba's second name apparently)

There are probably more, maybe list some you've come across recently.
Would be nice to put definitions on these so when people want to sound clever they can learn what it actually means or how to use it before they spout it all over.

Do tell.
None of those are Jargon terms (with the possible exception of World class as it is rarely ever applied correctly and means something different to just about everyone who uses it). They are terms used as short hand for actual footballing concepts that would take longer to explain, but most modern day football fans I know understand them, and it doesn't really take that long to if you don't (hence them not being difficult to understand). The prevalence of their use instead of providing longer explanations of what the actual significance of each term is, is more a product of the internet and the need to sound more pithy.

Always funny when the British are on their high horse about ‘fecking Americans‘ for words that they coined. The quarterback position originates from rugby.
Soccer is also a British term originally but it’s still fecking annoying hearing people use it instead of football.

"Typical northerner" is one that BBC radio Plymouth have tediously brought back and I'm also tired of "sweeper's flange".

I’m assuming it’s a name given to a deep lying playmaker, someone who sits back and dictates the tempo of a game but it’s a fecking stupid phrase that has no place in football, I hate it!
Well, if that's what's meant by it and I guess you're right, Scholes wasn't one.

"Box-to-Box" is being re-defined I think. or misunderstood

I've seen people say Pogba, Fred.. or even Hazard is B2B. Hardly.
Everyone is banding about 6s, 8s, DLPs, B2Bs etc but nobody knows what a DM is. Like it applies to anyone who isn't a silky midfielder. Fred, Mctominay and Matic are all interchangeable DMs apparently. Yet only one of them is in the true sense of the term.

And generational talent needs to feck off ASAP. Every other player is a generational talent these days. Which means nobody is.

I mean, American's speak English so most of the stuff they say is of British origin!

Does than mean we can't take the piss? I could care less.
Of course you can take the piss about anything you want.

I just made a post saying I don’t like when commentators say “Quarterback” in football, just doesn’t fit for me completely different sport. It’s like describing someone’s shot and saying he struck the ball like Babe Ruth, just doesn’t go.

Can you remember when Pace and Power was the cool thing? There was a period where every good player had Pace and Power!

That’s what I meant, obviously younger Scholes was a completely different player. I think Pirlo would be a better example.
Stop with the quarterback nonsense, it’s an American football position. Football/soccer has enough terminology to explain every position without bringing NFL into it!

sorry wasn’t directed at you as such as we are both on the same page!

Agreed.

Imagine being on a football forum and moaning about people using the word 'low block' or 'double pivot'. They simply summarize things that would take too long to explain.

@BAMSOLA i don’t agree. This may be a minor thing but it continues the Americanisation of our fine game. What’s wrong with saying “deep lying playmaker”? We don’t need NFL terms

Low block - as soon as Jose Mourinho said it on Sky Sports it became the go-to buzzword for armchair managers
Yes came here to post this. It is hilarious how people use this stuff and think they’re experts.

Never hear of 'generational talent' until last summer in the De Ligt transfer thread. At first i thought it was cool but now every time i read it i find myself getting really annoyed, it literally goes through me.

Whilst i am hear can anybody please tell me, what exactly is a 'smart save'

"false dawn"

Folks, if the sun came up, it's not a false dawn. It may go down sooner on some days than others, but when it comes up, it's dawn. The day may be short, the day may be long, but every time the sun comes up, it's a new day.

Now, just because you win a few games and then lose one doesn't make it a "false dawn." You won some games. You lost one. Or more. You'll win some eventually again.

It's a metaphor.

What should we say instead of double pivot?
We could talk about midfielders without saying that before someone made up that word.
Unless i got it totally wrong, it just means two midfielders, often behind the attacking one.

When ever I read "Pace and Power" my mind automatically does so in the voice of Andy Gray

"Paaace... Pwr... AND ACCKKKKURACY!"
