Does it make sense to limit our spending this summer?

Sancho is «one of a kind». If he is available and you can get him, you get him. To Man Utd it makes sense too as we are desperate for a RW (used to be anyway). But should we just leave it at that (if we are able to get him and that is a big if)?

I think you could make a good argument that we should. Our squad and first team is starting to look very good. Our midfield is as good as any. Both in terms of quality and depth. The same applies to our attack. If we manage to get Sancho we have not had more talent and potential since 2004. Our defence looks decent. Quite good. Not the same level as our midfield or our attack.

If we want to challenge, the defence is where we will have to improve. But looking at the thread regarding what defender to bring in it looks like the market for a central defender is quite difficult. There is few options available and we are probably competing with Chelsea and Man City. At a minimum. I know quite a few thinks little of Lindelof, but our defence is doing good with him in it. If we are going to improve significantly on it we probably need a RvP/van Dijk-type of signing.

Last summer, when we decided not to sign a RW we probably did because we wanted to wait for Sancho. A similar approach for a central defender could make sense. Maybe even more so considering we are in an decent state. Even if we do now know who we are waiting for.

I know there is a couple of really promising young defenders getting a lot of attention in here. But there is question marks on most of them and a few of them are still very inexperienced. In one year time, we will know more. Maybe the competition will be less too.

There is also a second argument. With the squad we have now, we should be able to raise or expectations of OGS. Meaning that if we fail to improve significantly next year, coming close to Man City/Liverpool, we might have to replace him. A new manager might want to put his mark on the team with a couple of signings.

All that being said, I would make an exception to Thiago if he is available this summer. First, I think he is world class and a midfielder in the mould of Paul Scholes. And I really miss Scholes. He would add something that we do not have and also depth making us less fragile to injuries on Pogba/Fernandes. In terms of quality he would have been a RvP-type of signing. Second, it felt as if he really wanted to come here a few years ago. If that is still the case, you do not turn down a player like that. Any manager would love to have him.

First of all holy crap you are all over the place with that post. But good as any? Depth in squad? What are you talking about? We take out one of Rashford or Greenwood and we got James and Mata as options on the wing. That’s not depth. You take out Bruno and you Perriera and Lingard. That sure ain’t depth. You take out Pogba and you have Fred. Not bad but obviously not as good. Mctominay and Matic that’s fine. We have a great starting attack provided no injuries. We need able backups like City and Chelsea do. Simple answer - we HAVE to spend and get in three players. One winger, one versatile AM/CM and one CB.

No. It makes no sense whatsoever. Indeed that's what will make the difference between this being a brief high or a true return to competitiveness. We have a platform now. We have to consolidate, starting this summer. Piss about and it'll be another sob story come next summer. 11 men don't win you anything. That's all we have so far. A good first 11, and even that comes with a couple question marks.

No it doesn't make sense. We're at least 2-3 quality players short.

The 'quality and depth' part is nonsense. Yes we have depth but the actual quality of that depth is poor. Just look at all the post-corona games and the significant drop off in quality as soon as we don't field our best XI. If we actually had 'quality and depth' we wouldn't be fielding an unchanged team for the fourth consecutive time with games every 3 days after a 100 day lay-off.

Our depth is very very average . Lingard , Periera , Mata ,James Ighalo to come in when our front 3/4 need a rest ,break or injury . Add the fact we might have champs league (If we make it )on top of the league And consider we have had half a team out in most EL games because the standard is crap. Throw in a FA cup and a league cup as well.
Squad still needs players but on a maybe like for like (better) replacements .

Yeah, it seems pretty obvious when you look at the fact we keep winning by 3 goals, then bring in James, Lingard, Periera etc. for the last half an hour and there are no more goals scored in the game. These are the same players that lost 1-0 to Bournemouth earlier in the season. Mid table level at best.

Absolutely not. We need to strike while the iron is hot and get actual depth into our squad.

Agreed

It actually makes sense to take advantage in such a scenario. Standing still would be silly if we have the funds.

It would make more sense to spend even more and add quality to this side. Opportunity needs to be taken as we look very close to where we want to be. We can start to ease next few transfer windows because hopefully by then our squad will be challenging for all competitions.

Would you guys take Thiago Silva as the central defender ? He's been playing in europe for 11 years at a good level and since PSG is going to release him at the end of season, could be a free transfer.

It would be a short term solution, but perhaps a good one.

Not sure what your point is really. You are too scattered. If your point is that we should go ahead and spend money if top players are available even if we have decent cover in those positions then I agree with you. This is the time to consolidate and go for the title next season.

Maguire needs pace next to him, so I'm unsure, but as a temporary fix he wouldn't be an awful option, as long as his wage demands are reasonable.

If all options were exhausted, and Man Utd went all out on other targets like a striker and a winger, I would take Thiago Silva on a rolling 1 year contract on 80-100k max, that's if there are no better targets, and if his lack of pace isn't an issue.

It's been done before with Laurent Blanc (36 years old at the time).

One of your reasons for not spending is because we won’t perform as well as expected and ole could get sacked! Hahaha

How’s about this crazy idea
We get the players ole wants so we can return to the top and nobody gets sacked?

Absolutely not! This is the window we have to be cut throat and ruthless! This is the best squad we have had since Ferguson retired, with Chelsea already spending smartly and Liverpool and City's squad looking close to a rebuild in a couple of years, this has become our most important window I can remember.

We don't need to sign alot of players, but if we strengthen our RW options with Sancho, bring a creative player into the midfield options in place of Lingard/ Andreas like DVB or Grealish and get a partner next to Maguire that will pair well with him, someone with quick acceleration and agile, I am a fan of Lindelof myself and have hopes this is him, then I see us right up there next season and leaves us just looking for a Matic replacement going forward, which next season we may discover we already have in Scott or Fred.

We are so close now that not being objective this window could see us left with our pants down if we have a few key injuries again.

That is a question for our accountants.

Tbh, I think there are some potential swap deals to pursue. This summer we plan to get rid of a few. Smalling could be used as a makeweight for Zaniolo who is apparently on the market for example. And if West Ham want Jesse and Jones, perhaps they can be used in a deal for Rice.

The Zaniolo swap with Smalling makes a lot of sense when compared to Grealish IMO. Zaniolo is also a better player and even more versatile.

Yeah that's my reasoning. Bailly has pace, but seems like the Cafe has given up hope on him

If we can afford it now is the right time to spend big on quality players.

We have momentum , for the first time in years Utd looks like a good place to go for ambitious players who want to go to a big club and help challenge for big honours , no longer just for a big pay cheque.

Need to strike when the iron is hot.

In fact this is the summer we should spend and reach next level. So no it doesn't make sense to spend less. Let us stop playing catch up. Ole has done a good.job with this squad but one or two injury we will be back fighting with arsenal.wolves and spurs for top 6.

Our depth is shit, as others have pointed out. This is the time to really build. We finally have a decent foundation. We might have numbers but it's a drop in quality. We need to address where we have a serious drop in quality.

A club our size should have 16-17 players who are nailed on to be our best 11. Players who are challenging for a spot in the first 11, giving the manager a headache.

Where do we have that? McTominay, Fred and Matic. Maybe Shaw and Williams to a lesser extent.

Nowhere else. An injury to Pogba or Bruno and suddenly we look a lesser team. Take Maguire out of defence and would you trust a Lindelof/Bailly partnership?

This transfer window is supposed to be an opportunity to try and level the playing field with the likes of Liverpool and Man City who do not plan on investing much. Chelsea on the other hand have gone all guns blazing and rightly so with the acquisitions of Ziyech, Werner and possibly Havertz. The numbers speak for themselves for each of those players and they've got the likes of Mount, Abraham, Hudson Odoi who are young and are talented. Chelsea will be the team to watch out for next season with the likes of City and Pool. With that being said, I think if Ed is smart, he will sanction at least 3 incoming and about 4 outgoing deals this transfer window. Lingard, Jones, Smalling & Sanchez should easily fetch us 25m + 15m + 12m + 20m = 72m respectively. That would easily mean 75k/ week (Lingard) + 75k/ week (Jones) + 70k/ week (Smalling) + 350k/ week (Sanchez) = 570k/ week off our books and I've not even included Mata and Periera just yet.

We should be looking at hidden gems with the likes of Benrahma (12m) and Buendia (15m) to strengthen our bench. With all the talk surrounding Sancho, I think Ed will end up paying 90m or so for Sancho given his age, his star appeal, already fan-favorite ala Bruno, and also current players are already excited to link up with him.

90m + 12m + 15m = 117m

Net Spent: 117 - 72 = 45m

Your whole hypothesis fails once you think about the transfer fees for Jessi , Sanchez and Jones . We would have to Sell Jessi twice over even then we might struggle to get 25m and Sanchez for 20m is a pipe dream and who is gonna pay 15m for perma crock Jones.

If Roma are willing to pay 12m for 30-year-old Smalling. I can see West Ham or Everton paying 15m for a 28-year-old Jones. With an agent like Raiola, I"m sure he could move Lingard for 25m. There were rumors of Inter being interested in signing Sanchez for 20m. So those numbers that I came up with had some basis to it.

Sounds like Utd may have more to spend than we think, however you don't want to show your hand to other clubs or will get ripped off.

You make it sound like limiting our spending is a decision we can just turn on and off. Transfer budgets are limited when the money is tight or simply isn't enough. Who wants to limit their spending by choice? We will spend that's for sure, but the fact that we just had to secure a credit facility during the lockdown doesn't exactly indicate that we have as much on hand as we would otherwise wish

Depth in squad? What are you talking about? We take out one of Rashford or Greenwood and we got James and Mata as options on the wing.
As I said, if we get Sancho. If we get Sancho we will have to leave Greenwood or probably Rashford on the bench. Compare that to Liverpools options if they get a few injuries. If Bruno got injured we would probably play Sancho as a replacement (and Greenwood as RW). Or maybe Pogba and then Fred. Point is, Sancho would give us so many options.

My second point is that we should avvoid spending on players if we are not certain they will be a huge improvement on what we got. I do remember quite a few wanting us to spend big on Pepe a year ago. Would we be able to compete for Sancho this year if we did? Probably not.

I agree, if our scouting department are convinced Konate is the second coming of VvD we should just go and get him. But Konate has been injured for basically the entire season. Before that he has not played that much competetive senior football at a high level. Approx 5 000 min. I know all of you in here crying for him have seen every minute of these 5 000 minutes, but I’m not sure OGS and our team have.

Sancho + Konate will do for me this summer. If somebody catches our eyes as potential replacement for Matic then go for him as well.

As long as we are able to flog Jones, Smalling, Lingard, Perreira, Sanchez, maybe Dalot (depends on whether Ole want to keep him as back up) we should free up plenty of room wage wise, and recoup some money in the process. After that it’ll be back to Fergie style couple of signings per year to refresh the squad and create competition.

We will limit our spending to around 50 million net this season and it seems like the sensible thing to do. Since we have zero clarity on the revenue sources for next season.

We might end up with no CL football, no match day revenue and limited sponsorship money too. I would be mad to spend more than a very limited sum.

And it could put us in a strong position next season compared to a few others. One year from now we will hopefully have more and better options or more information about current options.

If we actually have the money, then no.

If we don't have the money.. gee, wonder who's the genius that decided it's a great idea in keeping players that doesn't play and generously give expensive contracts to many players who don't deserve it.

Same ones who moan about us spending too much (which I find weird.. it’s not their money) are the same ones who’ll soon moan if we pull out of expensive deals and then get thrashed by Chelsea next season, who seem to be intent on spending around £895m this summer

Very few is moaning about us spending too much. I just question the value and quality available where we really need players. And that is excluding Sancho, who I say we should get regardless.

And let me be clear, if real quality is available, we should go for it. Like Thiago for instance. He would be an option in every position in midfield.

Every year people moan about it. “I want player A, but not for that price”

Really confusing. I wouldn’t stand behind someone in Sainsbury’s and be like “I want you to have those carrots, but not for £3”

Happy for United to spend whatever they want on whoever they want, as long as it improves us as a team
