RIP, he wasn't a bad player even if he played for the enemy and always got the best out his teams as a manager. I know he and Bobby had the differences, but they did seem to make up. Thoughts go out to all his family and friends at this difficult moment.

RIP Big Jack

Watching the BBC then it was lovely of them to show him handing the lifetime achievement award to Sir Bobby at the Sports Personality of the year awards.

His words on Bobby nearly brought a tear to my eye and I'm glad I seen it as I thought they were still not talking.

I was just going to post a similar note about this - they fell out for many years as Jack accused Bobby of leaving their family and their mum but also Jack had been disrespectful about Bobby's wife. I think they were just 2 totally different characters but still 2 brothers who won the World Cup together in 1966 - how good is that ?!!

However he came on that stage in 2008 and presented it to Bobby saying he was the "greatest footballer he'd ever seen and he's my brother."

RIP he was one hard footballer and a pretty decent manager especially for Ireland

As an Irish lad I'm gutted, he gave us some great memories.

In around 2004 I got on a train in Birmingham on my way up to Edinburgh. Making my way down the isle I wasn't looking where I was going and walked into a man in front of me. He turned around and it was big Jack. I stared at him and said "oh my god, you're Jack Charlton!". He responded "last time I checked" with a beaming smile on his face. It was a great moment.

RIP

awful news. A hero in Ireland , so many incredible memories when our Country literally stood still during Euro 88 and the World Cups in 90 and 94

RIP.

Very sad. An absolute legend of Irish football. That era in the late 80s early 90s was one of my most enjoyable periods of watching football.

A real feel good period for the entire nation. Thanks for the memories Big Jack.

That moment in 2008 had me choking back the tears.
I met Paul Reaney a stalwart of the horrible Leeds side a few years back and he told me that he and Norman Hunter were looking after Jack’s financials as he was really bad.
Feel sad for Sir Bobby too, I bet he’s devastated. RIP big man:(

RIP big fella. Not much got past him on that pitch. Great partnership with Bobby Moore for the England team, possibly the ideal pairing, uncompromising, ball winning, tough, vocal player alongside a calm, ball playing, silky smooth player who could sniff out danger. Sadly, not many left of the World Cup winning team now. Bobby and Nobby (how is he doing by the way?), George Cohen, Geoff Hurst and Roger Hunt. I can still see Bobby's tears, Nobby's jig, Bobby Moore wiping his hands before receiving the Cup from Liz, Sir Alf's very headmasterish matter of fact way he had about him. So many happy memories, so thank you big man, for being part of some of my fondest recollections.
