He is not just an 8 though. He could come into the team over Bruno or Pogba without any significant drop in quality. He's disciplined too and could also play in a pair with Pogba.
He can't play in a pair with Pogba, unless there is another DM sits behind them.

Newcastle wanted 50m pounds

Thiago at 36m pounds looks like the bargain of the century compared to him. I am just glad we didn't buy him.
Yeah we should and I get what people are saying about a midfield of Bruno, Pogba and him being too open, however we badly need someone silky on the ball in there and that is Thiago.

Pass at what? He would instantly be our best player in possession and make a mockery of pressing from the likes of Southampton.

Kimmich would be great but he's never leaving Bayern.
29 yr old injury prone player with no drive left (he's won everything there is), likely to be on massive wages. Shades of Sanchez and Schweinsteiger about him.

Listen to what Bayern’s supporters think of Thiago and you should be up in in the moon if we bought a player of his caliber. He don’t rely on pace. Technique, vision, passing, first touch and dribbling is world class. Extremely press resistant. Team player. (just like his father) A role model on and off the pitch. Available for €40m. What is it not to like?

I saw his injury record. He average approximately 30 games the last 3 seasons. With him our midfield could be world class in every PL game for the full 90 minutes.

I refuse to get dragged into to this. To good to be true. Last time it ended in a total meltdown. Just memories of Moyes makes my blood pressure go up.

Why are people paying any attention to this?

We know exactly the sorts of players we're looking at this summer, and know the positions we're most in need of. We also know that Ole submits a list of options for these position. Thiago isn't on any list, nor does he fit any criteria that Utd are now using for targeting options.

He's not young or up and coming, he has a poor injury record, no sell-on potential and doesn't play in a position we need fixing. Next.

Yeah will never forget how close this was in 2013,know it's unlikely but maybe we can pay up for him when Liverpool don't like Chelsea did with Werner.

He has "won" the CL with Barca in 2011 with one appearance in their CL campaign, I doubt he really regards himself as a CL winner. Has no international trophies and no trophies in England either.
I doubt drive is an issue, pretty sure he is very motivated. Injuries are a legitimate concern, one obviously never knows what might hit him. But unlike others he's not reliant on physical attributes so it's not something unheard of that someone will play at a world class level from age 29 to 34 (if given a 5 year contract). Modric had his best years in that time span.

Yeah, awesome player. We would be very lucky to sign him. We need quality players like him. Doubt we will sign him though, looks like they using our name to put pressure on Liverpool.

You are almost certainly right about him not being on Ole's list and he doesn't fit the general criteria.

The only thing I would say to that is sometimes things crop up unexpectedly like Van Persie in 2012 and you just go for them.

He’ll be fighting more with Matic for playing time. If we plan on competing on all fronts then having quality depth is incredibly important. Matic’s resurgence has been a positive development this year but there is no way he should be starting every game. We need more players with the profile and experience of Thiago, it would be a very good move if true.
If it's Matic position it's not going to be much of a fight

Good luck for Bayern though. That type of strategy will only work if the club is desperate to sign, don't think Liverpool is desperate to sign a midfielder.

In a normal window I would absolutely agree with you, and if Thiago was available for the reported price we'd be mad not to go for him.

But we're operating in a window where we are going to have to be very careful with the money we're able to spend. I can see us spending a decent amount, but can't see how we get diverted from key areas in need of bolstering in order to spend a decent chunk of our budget on Thiago.

Don't get this idea that he doesn't solve any problem. He plays in a position that we are relatively strong in. To me, that gives us room to take a bit of risk. If we can get him for decent money, it would be madness to refuse it.

Just when I thought the links with Liverpool had thankfully died down, it's clear from the article the only club in for him is Liverpool but they are trying to get him on the cheap as he wants to go there. Our name is being used to put pressure on Liverpool. Watch when they inevitably sign him all the media will make out out we missed out on him.

With 5 subs next season (and beyond I reckon) there’s absolutely no harm in having strength in depth.

Ole shouldn't just rule him out due to age and not fitting the criteria of players looking to make step up.

The guy has so much experience at the highest level which would be so valuable to this growing team.

Maybe should speak to Fergie about him as presume he had him scouted at Barca

Our name being used to get Liverpool to pay up.

Boring.

Id take him if he’s happy to take a pay cut & sit on our bench. He’s better than Fred & Scott. I’d rather we got a DM though. Moot point anyway, we’re not in for him.

Could be another case of mistaken identity. Source says 'Manchester' and the grapevine presumes 'United'.

First time I’ve entered this thread, and upon reading the first few pages, I feel bloody sick. How did Moyes turn this guy down? Questions like ‘Hey Gollum, would you rather sign Thiago for 22 million or Fellaini for 27’ shouldn’t be consultation questions, but tests. If the manager goes for the latter, you sack him on the spot. If I was Ed, that’s what I genuinely would have done.

What on earth was he thinking in 2013,still an absolutely staggering decision to say the least

Well if he's after the CL, he'd certainly shouldn't join Man Utd - his chances are much better where he's at. I also don't get the "no trophies in England" argument either. I doubt in 20 years Thiago will feel less accomplished because he never won anything in England. Or France. Or Italy.

Also Thiago reminds me more of a Marco Verrati type player than Luka Modrič. Don't think their career trajectories will resemble in their twilight years.

That’s absolute bullshit. Wouldn’t you know... our name is used to get our biggest rivals to pay up. We’ve no interest in Thiago.

He was told at various points that summer that he was getting Fabregas, Herrera, Ronaldo and Bale.

Woodward ended up only signing Fellaini, at the end of the window, for more than his buyout clause.

Thiago is not swapping Bayern Munich for United to come warm the bench. What is wrong with everyone seriously? He's not a bench player. If he comes to England it will be to play regularly. Probably at Liverpool or maybe even City or Chelsea.

He's not a DM and he's way too good to be a back up player for us. We haven't even been a regular CL club of late.

Transfers do crazy things to people on here.

I think the point is that he will laugh any club that offers him a pay as you play deal out the door.
Oh I agree don't worry.

We should sign Pogba up on a pay as you play deal then, yeah?
I was just highlighting why people might be reticent to sign him on anything that burns us like Hargreaves and Schweinsteiger did. Bayern know when to sell players.

I will say though, if I had the chance to sign Thiago I'd take it, he's one of my favourite players.
