Experiment with this in a couple of weeks in the EL, not in our most important game of the season.

Do you think the game against Leicester is the right time for such experiments? I mean logically speaking why risk that in such a high caliber game? C'mon man.

I thought this was a parody thread of the time the was a line of thinking (well of only one poster) that Anderson would make a great LB.

I'd be looking to sign two proper attacking wing backs (it hates me to say it) like Trent and Robertson.

Shaw and AWB just not good enough if we want to be going for league titles.

Would definitly get most of the money back for AWB.

I remember when Barcelona played Bronckhorst as leftback and I was like WTF

/watch?v=giR5TN631Dk Haha I forget he played for Arsenal, too. He played at leftback because he was too good to not have in the team.

/watch?v=JUUCF1FBB6g Bronckhorst was world class though. Versatile. He could play at leftback. He would walk into any team.

Just because he's left footed it doesn't necessarily mean he can play LB. It may be something to try in the future, but not for the most important game of the year. This isn't the time to experiment. I just hope Shaw is available...

Actually a very interesting idea. Not for the next game obviously but he has the engine to get up and down the pitch for the full 90. His biggest weakness is losing the ball in the middle of the park while under pressure and playing at LB mitigates this quite a bit.

Can he put in a cross? I don't have any memory of Fred crossing a ball for some reason.

He’s rarely out wide to put a cross in. But yes I’ve seen him put good crosses & decent corners in before.

He'd be awful there. Way too slow and will be a liability at the back post.

He has decent pace in closing down spaces but running after wingers in the open field he gets burnt every time.
Fred has the fastest time for a Man Utd player this season.

Under a tree.
Maybe as cover if short, but he's too slow in attack for today's modern day full backs and is terrible in the air, if I was the opposite manager I would just keep on targeting him with long diagonals.

I think it's something that can be tried, but I don't think the Leicester game is the time to try it.
Correct. Play Shaw if he’s fit, Williams if not. No matter how poor Williams has been, you play specialists in our most important final day since that bollocks 2012 one, and most important game since United 3-0 Villa in 2013.

I do respect the idea though, and would personally do it in the home tie vs LASK.

Seriously? They’re both already better than the Pool pair defensively, and are improving offensively. No point wasting money to upgrade these two when we have far more pressing concerns (De Gea, Maguire, new DM, new RW).

Would definitely give it a go. Defensive minded box to box midfielders and fullbacks are fairly interchangeable, particularly if you want the fullbacks to be able to play a bit

Fosu-Mensah was solid in the game at Palace. Would be great if Shaw is fit.
He really isn't. He ball watches massively and just stops defending if the ball isn't on his side.

He's athletic but that's about it.

So, you have two players who are not naturally left backs (Williams and Fred) and you are considering playing the one who has never played in that position (Fred) in arguably our most vital game of the season, based on deductions you have made on his attributes displayed in a completely different position (DM/CM)?

Probably not a good idea.

I'm not saying he's good, but he was solid in the Palace game. If it came down to him or Williams, I'd go with him.

Before trying him at left back I would be intrigued to see what type if job he could do as a left wing back firstly when we use 352 again in the future, he is definitely not slower than the likes of evra or Baines.

Evra was one of our fastest players, Fred might be quicker than Baines but nowhere near Evra.

This is the kind of disastrous experiment Mourinho would have tried towards the end of his time with us, along with a CM at CB. Definitely not something to be trying today, given what's at stake.

We have to trust our best players playing in their strongest positions today to get the job done.
