No in either model You have the development costs of the AAA games but one of the models earns an extra $440 million.
It doesn't. You have to use sony sales of the game for 12 months as a fair comparison. Unless they sell 0 copies in months 3-12 then your calculating is not right.

True. I will concede that in that context the maths was flawed. I thought the 9m copies sold was the total sales of the game.

I think the whole Xcloud in Gamepass thing is to sell Gamespass to people who will never own a console. There are billions of people out there who play games on phones but would never own a console. They are counting on increasing their sales of Gamespass to this target audience. If they can double their subscriptions through the cloud then gamepass really begins to work.

Gamepass looks excellent. I don't play nearly enough games for it to be worth it and my taste is too specific, but for any serious gamers out there wanting to keep abreast of the scene it seems ideal.

Gamepass is PS5 killer.

Ok... but what about the XSX?

Netflix movies tend to be shit anyway, but they have some decent shows.... What does this mean for gamepass, back to episodic gaming?

But seriously, not much excitement around XBox at the moment. Wtf?

Because it’s very poor in comparison to PlayStation.

If you're out when your Amazon boy delivers your PS5, tell him to leave it by the bins. It'll save you a trip.

It's not a PS5 killer by any stretch but I don't think the PS5 will outsell the Xbox massively this gen like last. Microsoft look like they're learning from their mistakes.

That said I don't think an Xbox will ever sell as many as a PS because you can get all the games through game pass on a PC anyway. Can't say the same for the superior Sony exclusives.

Gamepass looks great.

Gamepass isn’t worth it for a casual gamer like myself.

Gamepass is going to destroy the PS5.

Or Sony’s exclusives is a XSX killer?

Actually MS had a great advantage ( which it squandered spectacularly) at the start of this gen with lot of goodwill earned from Xbox 360 era. They actually did keep up with the sales of PS4 for the first 2-3 years. This time I don't think it will sell as much as Xbox one did in first few years.

No they didn't. The PS4 was always way ahead

Yeah no chance Xbox was close in first 2-3 years. By end of first year they were stripping off Kinect and realised they made a massive mistake. Xbox One had sold 7.91m and PS4 sold nearly 15m by the end of 2014.

PS4 was miles ahead in Europe. America was successful for 360 against PS3, but it wasn’t the case this gen.

PS4 was ahead by 5-6m numbers which was always expected ( compared that to end of this generation which is around 65m) . Same number will be there again considering how badly MS has performed this gen. Every E3 they were supposed to have this great lineup of games and then MS used to show nothing.

Gamepass is not a system seller and I don't think even MS think of it as system seller. They have given no reason for people to move to next gen with next to no games coming in first 2 years of next gen. I believe gap will be almost same like this gen unless MS price their console cheaper than PS5

As Bojan said above your numbers were all wrong. The 360 actually outsold the PS3 for a while and they ended the generation on basically the same numbers. It wasn't expected that Sony would have a big gap. Sony had no advantage going into the next gen, MS just made a gigantic balls of things with the pricing, weaker console, and always online crap.

The PS4 was outselling the Xbox One massively even at the start. It was never close.

November 2014 was the last time Xbox released its official sales figure which had shown 10m sales compared to PS4 14.4m. That gap was not that enormous. Not sure about Bojan figures but this is what Xbox official figures are and that's what I used.

You are right they blew their advantage though. That's why I feel the gap will be higher incase they price it higher than PS5 which according to BOM report ( not sure if it's true) looks more likely

Learn the difference between shipped and sold. Sony released figures stating how many they sold. MS released how many they shipped which means retailers could have been sitting on them.

The gap was big from day one. I was a massive 360 fan and saw a lot of people who were the same jumping ship. Better system, simple dashboard and more powerful. Xbox one was a mess at the start.

This isn’t the case with Series x. If they do price it more then they have a case to do so because it’s more powerful. Last time they forced you to have Kinect and the console ran like shit. It was never a close race. If it’s as close as you making it out to be in first few years why did MS stop releasing numbers after two years.

Anyway I think they will undercut Sony. They’d be foolish not to as they can take the loss more than Sony and they are the ones who have to entice existing PS4 users into their install base. Price will do that. There’s tons of people who just buy 2 or 3 games a year like FIFA or Cod that will just buy on price alone.

I’d be surprised if they don’t undercut them. If they didn’t why they waited so long to announce the price. They could have got a head start on release date and pre orders.

An extinction level event would have to be a PS5 killer or PS killer of any kind.

Mind you, xcloud and gamepass are very attractive.

Anyway, as I’ve said, you’d have to be pissing money out your fecking hoop to buy an Xbox series x. You can get a 10600K and a new Ampere or Navi GPU which will be primed for 4k gaming. It will cost you more but you will make that up with paying nothing for subscription and being literally able to customise your own graphics.

In November 2014, the company said it had sold 10 million Xbox Ones.
I understand the difference between shipped and sold. I was quoting the sold numbers. Can't find official page.

And I don't think they can undercut PS5 with 100$ more BOM than Sony. This notion of "they can charge more because of more CU" is not going to help them.

Wouldn't that cost a bomb? The appeal of console is the price point and for just a price of one GPU, you can get both Xbox and PS and don't need to upgrade anything. For cheaper GPU, you would actually get worse performance than the console. Why would you go for one?

You quoting a 2018 article that doesn’t also understand the difference between shipped and sold too sigh...

https://www.theverge.com/2014/11/12/7211395/xbox-one-10-million-sales

Microsoft is revealing today that it will "shortly" have shipped 10 million Xbox One consoles to retailers. The significant milestone comes exactly three months after Sony first revealed it had hit 10 million sales of its PlayStation 4 console worldwide. Microsoft’s sales figures count devices shipped to retailers, rather than sales directly to consumers. The PS4 has outsold the Xbox One for nine consecutive months with a total of 13.5 million units, but Microsoft hints that Sony's winning streak might be coming to an end soon. "As we head into the busy holiday season Xbox One led generation 8 console sales in the US for the past two weeks," says Microsoft’s devices and studios chief Yusuf Mehdi.
Straight from the horses mouth it says shipped not sold.

Yeah, if you’re getting into PC gaming, it will probably cost you a lot more. If you are already a PC gamer then £500 plus a graphics card sold will probably smash a series x. I really don’t know about PS5 SSD and their devs utilisation of it but it’s not going to be groundbreaking.

Okay I was under the impression that initial numbers were close and the gap widened after 1 year. Still I guess the Xbox one did fairly okay in its first year considering how bad its launch was. It blew away all the good will MS had earned with Xbox 360. This gen it doesn't have that and unless Sony pulls a PS3, I don't see how it can manage to increase its sales number.

I loved Xbox 360 would have gone for Xbox one at the start of this gen but due to relocation ( ( college and work) issues, I went into this generation late and by that time Sony was obvious choice. Now I don't think I would switch back to MS. Unless Sony makes PS3 mistake, I don't see how it's user base is going down.

I dunno, I've seen a lot of people on Reddit saying it's why they're either staying with Xbox or switching from PS. I don't think it appeals quite that much to everyone though

A lot depends on pricing for MS. They already started doing mobile type contracts for Xbox X. They going to carry that on with the Series X. That’s going to help people as not everyone especially due to Covid is going to drop £500 or whatever it costs on new consoles and stuff.

I’d be surprised if PS5 surpasses the first year PS4 had due to how the economy will be. It would have been difficult without Covid as PS4 sold well.

The PS4 still has quite a few years left in it too. We yet to see any third party exclusive next gen games. We seen upgrades and shit, but nothing that’s only coming out on new consoles. Third party publishers are not going to give up the 100m plus PS4 users for a few good years. Even MS some of their games are cross gen. So that’s my biggest concern with next gen that the first few years will be too much cross gen.

Sony SSD in isolation is not groundbreaking as GEN 4 SSD will be available for PC later this year or next year. Where it differs is the priority lanes (6 vs 2 in consumer SSD) and custom silicon I/O that resolves a lot of legacy issues. MS has velocity architecture but very little is known and it is mostly not hardware based implementation. Sony I/O solution also handles decompression while Xbox and PC depends on their CPU do that which is quite compute intensive. Not sure how these translate to better gaming performance or design as I don't have any experience in that but this Linus video gives a glimpse of that. Also Cerny "Road to PS5" video is quite informative if you wish to know more about that.

I never understand this weird thing that PC gamers do when they have to come into a discussion and insist “Why would you get a console when you can just do X for a pc that makes it much better”

I personally hope the xbox fails miserably, i don't want this gamepass and non ownership of games to become the norm.

xbox also introduced charging to play games you have already purchased online now people who play consoles don't even question it, hope it fails miserably.

I've got a pre order in for a PS5 but not sure i'll take it up when the time arrives, i'm sort of over ever increasing resolutions and textures.

I prefer a clean looking game with great gameplay that runs super smooth 144hz or above.

Graphics have reached a point for me where its pretty irrelevant now.

You do realise you can buy the games on gamepass separately? So not sure what ownership has to do with it. You can buy Gears 5 in the shops if you want.

Wishing a console to fail is sad. Improved Xbox pushes Sony. Sonys first party in the PS1 and PS2 days weren’t all that. They relied massively on third party. Just look at the PS1 Classic compared to NES classic. Games like GTA used to come on PS first. But with the 360 that changed all the major third party supported it, which meant Sony had to improve their first party output. Which they did for the latter years of PS3 and PS4. That’s just a small example of how MS pushed Sony.

You conveniently forgot to mention how MS also changed online gaming on consoles. It’s why the 360 will go down as one of the greatest consoles. Sony pretty much copied MS in that department. Nobody forced Sony or Nintendo to charge for online.

Out of interest why? I don’t own any of the TV/Films and music I watch/listen to now, not really fussed if gaming goes the same way and you just pay a monthly fee with the ability to play any game you want.

360 will never go down as one of the greatest console ever made for the simple fact it was manufactured with a console breaking architecture.

I loved getting the hair dryer out or waiting a few weeks as they shipped me back my console, online was fantastic on the 360 doesn't mean we had to be charged for it they saw a market pushed it and people ate it up, there is plenty of examples of people trying to enforce stuff in the PC market where enough people have stood against it that it was never implemented.

As for not owning the product i just see this less likely to push for greater games/new IP's as without having to go in the open market and sell your product the demand for quality is not as vast.

I don't think Sony would of pushed so many unique and top quality story driven games if they were just handed out on a subscription basis, this is just my feeling.

I'm totally aware people can buy it physically but the average console gamer (COD/Fifa every year) will eat up the subscription fee without thinking longer term, i just think the model as a whole is bad for the industry.

Micro transactions are bad enough this method reeks of adding more and more
