We are not miles off Liverpool. We are young and hungry, we will sign players to give us more strength and our young talents will only be better.

Liverpool are great now, but I can’t see that they are building for the future. They will struggle soon enough.
We are 33 points off Liverpool. If Liverpool took a break and skipped their first 11 matches, they would have still finished ahead of us.

If we interpolate the points of the last 14 matches (when according to everyone we have been great) over the course of the entire season, we would have finished 13 points below Liverpool.

Saying that we are not miles off Liverpool is a total delusion. The equivalent of Liverpool having the best team, manager, stadium and owner’s wife but somehow finishing 20 points below us. The stuff that we enjoyed taking the piss out of RAWK.

Only unbeaten team since restart.
Third in goals conceded.
Fifth in goal scored.
Third in goal difference.
Second in games lost.
Third in the league.

Sack Ole.

A huge season and Ole has impressed me a lot with the work he has done.

I really did not rate our squad at all before this season. Only Pogba and DDG were the top class players for me.
There were questions about everyone else, Martial and Rashford having their first season as starting players, and no recognised goal scorer. The midfield looked hopeless without Pogba, and the defence was the only area that I was a bit confident with. In the end though, it is goals that win you games and I was not expecting a top 4 this season, especially with us selling Lukaku with no replacements. But all our forwards have improved, which is exciting as that bodes well for the future.

Unsure what you mean by interpolate in this situation, but last 14 games; Liverpool 29pts, +11 gd - United 32pts +23 gd?

None of us would have seen 3rd coming back in January. We should be very proud of our post January form in the league, regardless of a slight dip near the end. Is third where we want to be? No, but it's big progress. The signs are clear. Being back in the champions league is huge for us financially and it terms of attractiveness to players. Both key in pushing on further.

On a purely personal level, that takes amazing mental fortitude and self belief to perform under such pressure.

Ole is a serious man and with plenty of untapped potential.

I'm very happy with our finish to be honest. A little concerned with the quality of display for the final run in but with such a ridiculous schedule it's hard to be overly critical as many of our better players needed a rest, especially given how explosive they are.

Plenty of positives with CL football again at United; financially it's crucial and even more so with Covid and you have to look at recruitment/retention of players. It should help us keep the likes of Pogba and tempt the top bracket of talent who may have seen CL football as a deciding factor. It's also great experience for our young team to play at the top table and another important piece in the rebuilding phase.

I'd love United to go win Europa now and end the season with a trophy.

He doesnt get enough credit. People have already forgotten the state we were in when he took over. A season and a half later we are unrecognisable.

He has done a marvellous job thus far and he is far from finished.

Get in there Ole....lets jump another two places next season!

Take the average number of points we got in this 14 matches, and multiply by 38 (that is what interpolation in this context means). We end up with 86 points, 13 points fewer than Liverpool who this season got 99.

I never said interpolating Liverpool’s points of last 14 matches, that makes no sense to do (especially considering that in 7 of those matches they were playing for nothing). United in the other hand makes sense, assuming that we have really improved and it was not just a purple patch. So my point is that even if we were during the entire course of the season as good as in these last 14 matches (football does not work that way, but let’s make a though experiment) we still end far below Liverpool.

I'm excited about it giving us a platform to move on to better things. We've got a young squad with lots of potential and a couple of good signings could make us a genuinely top side again. Onwards and upwards.

Quite, I mean if your looking to be negative and piss on everybody’s chips it’d make no sense to do that at all. As you were then.

I am sorry that you can’t see the whole picture. We are not better than them right now. Next season we might be able to challenge them if we have a good transfer window. Our young team has learned a lot this season. We have played them, full aware that they will have ups and downs.

It’s like this with everything in life, the young ones will eventually take over. It’s a progress of course, it’s not going to go fast. What Ole has done is pretty unique. He knew that we would never challenge this year, we could even be outside the top 4, but he gave them the chance anyways. Think about it, if you can build a young team like ours to challenge, we can be powerful for a decade.

I tell you again, we are not miles behind them at this point. But hey, no bother trying to change my mind, I will never change that opinion anyway.

I am not celebrating. I am happy we got into the CL but this is United we are talking about. Celebration is for winning the CL or the PL.

Interesting to see posters saying this is our best season post Fergie. Winning the Europa and EFL in 2017 was a better season, albeit feels like we’ve played better football this season.
it was unquestionably our best half a season i think. we have the most points since christmas, and played some great football with more consistency than we have managed post ferguson

I am not trying to be negative, I am just using a simple concept.

We know how good are Liverpool, they are good 99 points. United is good 66 points. The entire point has been that for us there was a story of two 'halves', being shit for the first 24 matches, and then being great for the remaining 14. We have been in a title-winning form for these last 14 matches (according to the Caf), when we played better cause some players returned, Bruno was signed, Mason became a regular starter and we were more threatening in the attack. So it is a legitimate question to ask, how good we would have been if we maintained this form for the entire season if we had Bruno and co for the entire season. Well, by interpolating these 14 matches during the course of the entire season, we end up with roughly 86 points, 13 less than Liverpool.

It is as a simple statistical concept as it can exist.

Of course, we can interpolate the points for Liverpool too, but what would be the point of that? We already know how good are them for the entire season, they proved it. We don't know how good a United in form and with Bruno is for the entire season, so that's why I interpolated our great form over the entire season and why in that case we end up with 86 points instead of 66. In fact, this is being extremely positive, I don't think that the form we showed really reflects our ability as we started showing in the last 5 matches.

I am very please with this season now. It looked dark, but i always kept in mind that a few of our losses and draws was games we should had won, and injuries played a massive part. When we had our players fit, and with Bruno instead of Mata or LIngard, our team clicked much better right away. We have improved in every aspect. Defense to offense.

I am very excited to see if Ole can actually progress from here. I think its going forward we will see what kind of manager he is. The hardest part is still in front of Ole and the team.

And keep in mind that Klopps team that just now won the league vs the team he took over are 99.9% change. If i read correctly, only Milner is left from the team he took over vs the team that won the league this season. This matters because a lot of people on here seem to think that it happend over night, and with few signings. Truth is that Klopp had to literally change the entire team to pull it off.

I have absolutely loved this season, and I'm so glad that it has paid off in the end especially as I've done my best to remain positive even during the low periods. I think honestly it stems from the fact that Ole has just been excellent for me and barely put a foot wrong. All the players have improved and what's exciting is I don't think we have seen the best of any of them yet which means we still have more levels to find.

We need to kick on this window, get Sancho through the door plus a couple of others and we will surprise a lot of people next year (many Utd fans included).

I just go back to January when we just lost 2-0 at home to Burnley. 14 points off Leicester. Things were pretty low.
A great achievement to get 3rd regardless of who fecked up and who didn’t.
Credit to Ole and the players
that was the low point for sure. hopefully liverpool slack off a bit next season and city continue to look beatable, just add 3 players and we could challenge.
brilliant unbeaten run. if we can do that from the start next season, we have a chance.

We didn't win anything so why would we celebrate? Done well to get Champions League but for a club our size we should be in the Champions League year in, year out.

Happy today went well but need to kick on now, no more excuses anymore we need to push on as a club again

Not a single change. It would be awesome for it to happen, but it just won't. Their squad is not gonna get weaker, we can expect a maximum drop of 10 points for them. Even then, United needs to improve for 23 points to match that. Just is not gonna happen.

This team might challenge in a couple of years if we sign some players (and either a new manager or I prove to be totally wrong with regards to Ole), but challenging for the league is just not gonna happen next season. I would take a comfortable (that would be 75-80 points for most seasons) finish in top 4 right now. Which would actually be a significant (and measurable) progress and will show that we are in the right direction.

And yet the reality is football rarely, if ever works like that. I remember a couple of seasons ago Liverpool were considered to have a worse team than us and yet we moved in opposite directions. Football and life can move very quickly in unexpected directions, nothing is certain but I strongly believe this Utd team could be something special in years to come.

I think you are right about that. It’s not going to be easy challenging next season. We probably need more time. I have hopes though, because it would be awesome if we did :)

Well, Mourinho self-exploded to be fair, we were arguably better than them, while they improved and some of their players reached their peak. We need Liverpool to self-explode, do a few brilliant signings and hope that City does not improve, just to challenge for the title.

I think it is more realistic that will happen when Liverpool's attack age, which is a time when we can expect all our three attackers (and some new signings) be at their peak.

For me next season is to improve and cement our place in top 4, the season after that to show signs of challenging, and then in the next 3 years to hopefully win some titles. No player except Matic is gonna become worse in those years. It is a process after all, and it will be done (if at all) step by step. We won't magically close a 33 point gap in the course of a season.

I've been nervous all weekend and there were probably some frowned faces in my building looking toward my apartment as I celebrated the win loudly but I don't care. It was worth it. Great end to the season. We're not there yet but this is the best I've felt about United in years. Let's hope it's just the beginning.

Top 4 was always the realistic target so happy we've done that.
Real positive is that we look like a team again rather than individual egos and this tied in with having one of the leagues youngest teams mean there's real hope that with smart additions to flesh out squad depth we can reignite like a Phoenix.
Still early days to be sure but maybe now we're in Chapter 2 of our revival after spending six years reverting back to zero :D

First time I have been on this forum for a few months because I was so fed up with the negativity. This thread is so refreshing apart from a few idiots and so I am not going to spoil my happiness with our direction and progress by reading any other threads. Onwards and upwards....
