This thread makes great reflection for those who are still critical of Oles performance this season. Few had United in the top 4 and almost no one had them higher than 4th. Feck, even I didn't.

A lot of people overrated Arsenal at the start of the season it seems.
It was purely down to people hyping up their transfers like Pepe. Same thing will happen next season with Chelsea while conveniently forgetting that it’s very rare new signings all come in and transform a team together. It’s far easier for new players to slot into an existing team and system. Sancho would have a massive impact at Utd in a short space of time as he would slot into an obvious hole.

The wheels really fell off for Spurs and Arsenal.

Transitional periods for both clubs, and due to Covid neither of them are going to have any kind of decent war chest for their managers to fix the inherent problems in their squads. Funny thing is Covid was not around and Spurs still managed to not buy anyone in an xfer window  At least now they have an excuse.

It is unbelievable the amount of posters who had united outside the top 4 and some even the top 6. Hang your heads in shame and consider punishing yourselves like the monk in the Da Vinci Code.

I still feel they'll be tough times ahead for Chelsea and I suspect Spurs will sort their shit out sooner or later so I'm gonna go

1- Liverpool
2- City
3- Spurs
4- Arsenal
5- Chelsea
6- Leicester

Arsenal, I never learn :(

So many people, irrespective of whether they were Ole in or Ole out, had us finishing outside Top 4.

And yet, we have the most stubborn of Ole out people saying that third was about par for this team... Laughable.

Give the man and this team credit, ffs.

It was always going to be out of City and Liverpool. That said, I didnt expect Spurs to drop off so much under Poch, especially given they got to the CL final last season, but I think Jose all in all, did quite well to get them up to 6th.

Lampard deserves a lot of credit. The transfer ban meant other teams had a head start and I think they did well to secure top four.

As for us, I always felt we had the squad to make top four and thankfully we did. Would have beem intetesting to see where we would have finished if we had Bruno from the start.

Arsenal have had a disatser of a season. Arteta has steadied the ship, to be fair to him, but still have a lot to do if they're to finish anywhere near the top four next season.

Liverpool: They walked the league. They are the best team right now.

Man City: They scored tons of goals. I am surprised by the gap between 1st and second

Man Utd: We did pretty good to finish 3rd. We do have the team for it. If we had Bruno from the start I don't think it would've been tremendously different given the injuries we had. Instead of 66 we could've finished at mid 70's at best. I feel we would've still finished 3rd, but it would've been a lot more comfortable 3rd.

Chelsea: Lampard did a great job for Chelsea, to be able to secure the Top 4.

Leicester: Knowing they were in the top 3 almost entire season, they really blew it.

Spurs: Mourinho did well since the restart. I thought they'd end up at 7th or 8th, but did well to finish in Europa League qualification spot.

Arsenal: Have a lot of work to do.

Wolves: They are like Leicester 2.0, a good team. A few more addition and they could really be challenging for top 4.

No one's really overhyping us, even the most optimistic fan is saying third at best. City and Liverpool will still be far too good for the rest next season.

Also you need more than one player yourself to truly kick on.

I actually think we're better than people give us credit for. Although that position does depend on us remaining injury free.
Close enough.

I think many have forgotten just how tough things were looking in August. My feeling at the time was that by not signing at least one CM in the summer we'd left ourselves an injury to Pogba or McTomminay away from being lost in midtable because they were the only two midfielders who looked anything like capable to doing a job for us. I've always tended towards optimism but:

Matic looked finished
Fred had been a disaster up to then
Andreas is just a bad footballer
Lingard had regressed horribly.

We had McTominay and Pogba who were good enough and nobody else. Literally nobody else. Then we lost both of them. Scotty for around 6 weeks. Pogba for most of the season.

Our league position through the Autumn and Winter reflected the fact that we had relegation standard midfield for a few months. That's not an exaggeration. Of course the narrative was Ole was out of his depth because he couldn't get this midfield to win every week.

Somehow over a few months Ole and the coaches managed to transform Fred from useless to one of the better performing midfielders in the league. Then they managed to develop a partnership between him and McTominay that made us competitive but still lacking creativity due to the reliance on Andreas to provide it. Adding Bruno finally got us into a state where we have a creative force in there and had a genuine chance. That was the end of January around 25 games into the season. By then it should have been way too late.

Somehow it wasn't. They put a run together. Then getting Matic looking much fitter during the break and getting Pogba back allowed us to get to another level and charge into 3rd.

It was a remarkable turnaround. Ed left Ole in an absolute mess in August with a barren wasteland for a midfield and he just gritted his teeth and got on with it and over the season made it work. For a team where Andreas Pereria played almost every league game until the end of January, 3rd place is a miracle.

We will see, I think Utd are comfortably further than Chelsea along the process, I do agree that both teams need more signings.

We could drop to 3rd or even win the league but it depends on numerous factors. 2nd is the safest bet.

I think United are going to regret not strengthening more/replacing some of their outgoings.

I'd be surprised if Arsenal don't get top four.
What was I thinking?!

I think Rogers is going to have a very good season.
If you ignore Arsenal, that's all the right teams... Sure that means I originally named 7 teams, and none of them are in the right place, but who's counting?

I think even for next season I see us finishing 3rd unless if we improve massively over the summer.
Regardless though i see us reducing the gap quite a lot. To be realistic, if we end up with 75-80 points, i'd be very happy.

I think top 4 would be a lot closer next season than it was this year.
5-8 any case are close competition most seasons.

1 Liverpool/City
2 City/Liverpool/Manchester United (got a chance if we improve or have no injuries)
3 Manchester United/Chelsea
4. Chelsea/Manchester United
5. Spurs
6. Arsenal/Wolves/Leicester
7. Arsenal/Wolves/Leicester
8. Arsenal/Wolves/Leicester

This thread reminds me of Morecambe and Wise with Andre Previn - "I'm playing all the right notes - but not necessarily in the right order."

Based on what exactly? Have you seen the gulf in class between our squad to the squads of City, Liverpool, Spurs? Chelsea, Arsenal? Dare I say Wolves, Everton? What happens if Pogba and Rashford are injured? A small injury crisis and we are fielding a genuine mid-table team.
Need to have a little more faith my friend :)
