He's hardly gonna say so and so player is utter dross.
It's weird, ain't it? But some people actually seem to want him to confirm - in public - that he doesn't rate certain players, just because...they don't themselves, I suppose. Disregarding entirely how tactically stupid it would be to downplay the importance of a player another club might be interested in buying.

"Yeah, Smalling ain't all that and I really don't miss him - but please buy him, preferably at a high-ish price."

Exactly. Only a few months ago Ole was saying stuff like Sanchez was going to come back and surprise a few people. It was an obvious lie when he said it but the man has to manage the squad. He has to pretend like these players are worth other clubs buying and, in the worst case scenario, keep their chins up if we can't move them on. At the back of Ole's mind he'll be thinking 'if we can't sell this lad I don't want him moping around Carrington damaging team morale so I can't come out and end him in public.'

And yet another chance to be given.

Won't be the Lask.
ahhahaha

I don't think is really "a chance", he has played plenty, the decision is probably taken whatever it is. Wouldn't be too serious to let a match against Lask to be too determinant...

I think he will go if we find a buyer or a loaner, but that won't be easy so he has a good chance of staying.
(look, I said absolutely nothing in the last phrase... I look like a twitter idk)

Chris Smalling update
“I think Chris has shown how valuable he is for Man United and this season was about being a regular, proving how good a centre-back he is. I wanted to give Harry, Vic and Axel a chance so we find out Roma was best for him. He has shown this season he will be valuable. I have been speaking to him throughout and have been delighted with his season.”
Read: We'll sell him at the earliest convenience.

Judging from this, the probable XI is : Romero, Fosu Mensah, Bailly, Maguire, Williams, Fred, McTominay, James, Mata, Lingard, Ighalo.

Might rest Maguire and/or Williams if Mengi or Dalot impressed in training.

Potential cameo appearances for the youngsters in Laird, Galbraith, Garner, and Chong.

As someone pointed out in another thread earlier today, Ole - thankfully - isn't showing his hand every chance he gets. He's actually a bit clever like that.

People had meltdowns when he praised Sanchez around this time last year - days later, Sanchez was off to Italy.
Exactly, there was a meltdown when he praised Lukaku, Sanchez in August, in Jan again. What Ole says in PC is not what he really thinks about players.

I know a deal is a deal and that Smalling's loan was till the end of Serie A season. However, it just seems a bit underhanded to demand Smalling come back now when Roma are still playing in the Europa League. Is this about giving us a slight edge in winning the EL?

Roma are lowballing us. If they want him then pay up. Simple.

Words are just words. Let's see what Lingard does on the pitch.
His "I am back" kind of post after his Leicester goal seemed way too early for me.

feck sake. Shaw out for the season? What happened to the lad? I thought he just rolled his ankle.
Shaw has more than his fair share of spells out with injury. This is no surprise. Extra reason we should buy another left-footed LB for depth and competition.

Completely agree. I'm honestly more comfortable with Williams being cover at RB than I am at LB.

They were given the option to buy him but they didn't want to pay 20m for him.

Apart from whatever defensive failings he has due to his age, inexperience or ability... he is also of no use to our offensive play there. He spends his entire time facing inside towards his CBs and can't (understandably) provide any width or penetration on his wrong foot. It's was no surprise there was hardly any link-up going on on the left, on what was previously our most dangerous side of the pitch, as soon as Shaw stopped playing.

Anyhow, apologies, don't want to delay the thread further. I'll shut up now.

I'd like to see Williams given a run at right back in Europa.

He's never going to be a left back anywhere, frankly, and going forward AWB has been pretty dismal so it couldn't hurt to give Williams a shot this month.

Excited for this. United of all clubs can’t be churlish about winning a European trophy. Winning this would be one of the great achievements in our history, like beating Ajax was a few years ago. We’ve only won five major European trophies in total and massively underachieved over the decades. Chelsea have even won more in the PL era than we have in the same time period. Sevilla have won as many since 2006 than we ever have. It’s time to address this.
