He was better suited to play when we were set up more defensively pre 4-2-1-3, he doesn't look confident attacking in this set up because it relies on quick interchanges in and around the box, which he doesn't have in his locker, maybe he will develop it, he's still young.

He did affect Rash's game, although not fully to blame for Rash falling off a cliff the last 3 games but definitely one of the reasons.

Solid squad player to have.

He doesn't look as natural on the right. I keep hearing about this from people who have an obsession with left footed left backs.
Off the top of my head there's been 2 good right footed left backs since I started watching football. Irwin and Lahm and Lahm didn't stay at left back for his entire career either. It's an incredibly tough job playing fullback these days anyway.....but playing on your wrong foot makes the job even harder still.

I like Brandon. Just think he'd make a better right back. Just my opinion.

Manchester Utd never lose, just run out of time
He did much better defensively against Leicester. Really didn't provide anything going forward though. I'm sure he was getting forward more earlier in the season, but lately he just doesn't seem to trust his left foot at all and every time he gets the ball he just turns back and passes it inside.

No you're quite right, all our players should throw up their hands and look disappointed everytime a young player doesn't pass to them. That's just the culture we're trying to instill.
That’s not why they “threw up their hand’s” ( didn’t say they did that either) they held out their hands in a gesture to say come on and shook their heads in disappointment. It wasn’t just that he didn’t pass, it was that he made the wrong decision countless times.

They didn’t berate him, shout at him, tell him to wise up. Just held out their hands in frustration as he kept making the same poor decision time after time.

You’re making it sound like they are some sort of drama queens. No point in debating this as you clearly never witnessed it so will leave it at that.

I agree with this. I think hes good at going back and forth, but being right footed means he cuts back a lot. And then does a pass. If he was cutting back and putting in a cross at least 30% of the time, then it would be fine. But because of his right foot (lack of left) he doesnt get down the byline to pull the ball back. I reckon it would be worth seeing if he does do that from the right.

Decent debut season.

He wasn't better than Young usually is.

Rose tinted glasses because he's a youth player.

He was OK but not ready for the league or anywhere close. Still an okayish performance but mostly he didn't do much wrong, rather than too much right. But looked positive and stable.
You can say the same after one year, hasn't improved that much, doesn't mean he won't.

A mixed bag of performances over the season, but overall an excellent introduction to first team football. I love his attitude to games, very tenacious. Unlike Greenwood I think he’ll need another season of coming on from the bench and filling in in both sides at FB before he’ll be ready to try and nail down a place. I also think that we may try and get a more attacking full back at left back, so that might hold him up too. But I think he’ll be in the squad for the next few seasons and hopefully he’ll develop enough to get a first team spot.

How many times over the years at old trafford have you heard "smash him" to a player running down the line and they never do?

Brandon has earnt cult hero status already. He'd never pull out of a 50/50 with anyone, even if they're double his size.

Zambrotta was awesome at Juve. Genuinely 3 of the best LBs I've ever seen there (peak Zambrotta that is). Zanetti wasn't bad there either. And in the Prem Gallas and O'Shea managed a lot of games at LB for top teams, not that O'Shea was top class or anything but he certainly contributed to our success. I actually really liked Gallas at LB though.

If I had to name my top 10 that I've watched, with very little thought behind it and in no order, I'd probably say:

Carlos
Alaba
Evra
Cole
Lahm
Irwin
Zambrotta
Lizarazu
Marcelo
Maldini

So 3 out of 10 right footers. As long as your left foot isn't just for standing on (and I've seen some lovely crosses from Williams on his left so he's clearly got it in him when his confidence is up), I don't think it has to be a problem. Good players will make it work.

Not that I'm saying he's the new Zambrotta or anything before anyone jumps on me, but he's got a lot of attributes to be able to contribute to a top team's squad IMO, not the least of which can be versatility of course.

If you turn the sound up all the way, you can just faintly hear in the background "you scouse bastard" as he makes his run up.

I wonder if that was Nico Williams who has recently joined the Liverpool first team

I'm not a massive fan of his (as a long term prospect for starting) however he's fully deserved a new contract. Hopefully he continues to improve and provides good cover at both RB and LB.

This will give other academy graduates alot of confidence because it shows, United will give opportunities in the first 11 not just to those who have great talent like Rashy, Greenwood etc but also ones that will work hard and fight for the cause, similar to McTominay.

Would be good to see him improve next season.

Great news. Always good to reward our younger players when they do well. I just hope he can improve to the point where he's a genuine first teamer.

Well deserved! Sure he has his flaws but I'm a big fan of this guy, always gives his best and has a shithousery attitude we lacked for years. Great cover for both FB positions. If this forum wasn't obsessed with the fact he is a right footed player playing as a left back he would have gotten a lot more praise than he currently gets.

65000 per week ?
He certainly deserves a new contract, but if that's accurate it's yet another ridiculously over-the-top wage that we hand out. It's at least 20k more than he would get at any other club in the world so why do we feel the need to pay that much? I mean, apparently it's more than what Wolves pay Ruben Neves, Adama Traore and Raul Jimenez.

For a club basically run by bankers I find it strange that we live in a bubble world of our own in terms of what we pay our players (not necessarily our top players).

It's upto 65K per week, if he achieves all possible bonuses then he will get 65K per week, not every week.

He hasn't done remotely anything to deserve half of it, let alone 65k per week.

So, here's what I don't understand.

He got a contract extension only 10 months ago which takes him through June 2022 with a club option for another year. He was on 40k a week. This new contract effectively adds 2 more years (including another option year) and a >50% pay rise.

Why did we need to do this? We already had 3 more years of control.
Looking at the video, plus all we have seen from his this season, he reminds me of Stuart Pearce in terms of attitude and bravery. He will fill out abit and add some extra muscle over next 2 years and so get even stronger and more formidable.

He fully deserves his upgraded contract today. Using 'Football Manager' as a template, it feels like he has been afforded official 'rotation' status as opposed to 'wonderkid' or 'talented youth' status. Hence the higher base salary and add ons. That will be a huge boost for his already growing confidence: he now knows he truly belongs in the first team squad, that the manager fully trusts him and will have no hesitation in playing him when required. Feels like the same journey Gary Neville went on.

As he can play full back on both sides, he has a great squad role to deputise for Shaw or AWB. He will get plenty more games next season.

believer that Sancho will turn it around
If he achieves every bonus to hit the 65k mark it effectively works out to about an extra 1.3m over a full season. I don't see why people think this type of contract is what's problematic for the club. If anything, given that we don't know what the base salary is, it could just be a slight increase in the base with further incentives for certain personal and team achievements, which seems, idk, fine to me?

It's really not that big of a deal and also demonstrates to other young players coming through the ranks that they will get chances from the manager, and if they impress him they will be rewarded for their positive performances.

Nothing in that link says 40k.

What I've read today suggests he was on 4K and will be at 40k with this new deal. It can rise to 65k based on a number of unknown factors but we don't know whether they are performance or time related. People need to calm down.

IF it is 65k (no matter it is based on other factors) it is ridiculous. He had solid debut season but it is still in the air will he be good enough or not.

Applauding a reckless challenge which could have caused injury and he was rightly sent off for? Hmmmmm, the double standards are strong here.

TBF he’s kept the bravery but cut out the recklessness.
He’s also a kid who can take it without whinging. I’ve no doubt this has impressed the coaches.

Good for him, I'm always glad see him on the pitch, obviously he could go either way still, but in the main I've liked what I've seen so far.

Yeah, I think you're right. I got the 40k number from this deal confused with the last one.
