Reminds me of the question an 8yo Kid that I teach asked me, "would you rather eat a dog poo flavoured ice cream or a dog poo that tastes like ice cream?"
Surely if the dog poo tastes like ice cream that’s not an issue.

Even if you combined the footballing ability of both, you would not get a premier league player, let alone, a united player.

Tough one. Lingard is probably in the 2nd best spell of his Utd career right now. Timing of this debate is harsh on Cleverley.

Cleverley was useful, borderline decent in a dominant side with better players around him. I guess we will see over the coming season if Lingard can better that.
In a struggling side, there is no worse player than Cleverley. None.

I'd go with Cleverley given he was part of a title winning team. And played regularly. I'm comparing 2012 Cleverley to Lingard btw, not current Cleverley, who is debatable Championship level.

However, in terms of magical disappearing acts on the pitch, Lingard is King. That cloak of invisibility works wonders.

I didn't say Cleverley was easily better, I said they are both Watford-bench-warming standard. There is objectively nothing that Lingard is better at on a football pitch than Cleverley.

When we're done with this utterly redundant poll can the next one be to see if James is less shit than Obertan?
You did say Cleverley was easily the better footballer.

But yes we can do James vs Obertan next. My money is on James for that one

Lingard scored the winner in an FA Cup final.

This season has been rotten for Jesse but he had his good moments for us and at times it looked like he could be a squad player for the team...TC23 was never good enough imo.

Cleverley was a regular in one of the top teams of Europe. He had a decent talent but not the mentality.

Lingard was a regular in a team that wouldn't finish in the top 4. Truth is that if we were not stupid he would be a squad player in Aston Villa. Awful player, stealing a living.

I make it Lingard has had just over 62% share of the voting so far.

Closer than I thought it would be tbh.

Lingard but I can't think of 2 worse players to compare. Both are nothing players but at least Lingard will have few goals he'll be proud of.

We should be thankful to be given a life where we could see them both play. Both are legends in their own regards.
Cleverley the best midfielder of his generation, one of the best ManUtd midfielder academy products since Paul Scholes and Lingard the best attacking midfielder the world has ever seen since Ronaldinho when he still played there.

Cleverley looked top notch for the first 3 months, but looked like he had another few levels to go too. It then became evident that wasn't the case and he regressed massively. Lingard has been a decent player at times for us, we have had to rely on him as a starter though which I don't think a team like United should be doing. Squad player at best.

Oh look another Lingard thread.....
People are obsessed with bashing him.
A guy who btw has won us a FA Cup trophy.
There’s a reason to why you mostly see (compared to our rivals) our own players getting ridiculed on social media (Jones, Lingard etc.)
Even though there are worse players in the other clubs.

Lingard has a better shot for sure.

It's a close call, Cleverley for all the shit he got had few decent games too and he was compared against players like Carrick, Scholes. Whereas Lingard was compared with inferior teammates.

Maybe if people started using stats like they do now, maybe Cleverley would have been rated higher averaging around
2.3 tackles per 90 mins
1-1.5 interceptions
1.5 key passes

But we have watched him every min and it was clear to see he was just sideways passing merchant.

I think Welbeck was part of that discussion OP mentioned. So...
1. Welbeck
2. Lingard
3. Cleverley

Lingard and it's not even close. Cleverly was a joke bar 7 games and even then, he wasn't amazing
