The state of New York is suing to dissolve the National Rifle Association, according to court documents filed on Thursday.

The suit, which New York Attorney General Letitia James filed in New York state court, alleges that the NRA’s leadership spent funds improperly, engaged in self-dealing, and made false or misleading disclosures to the attorney general and the IRS.

It's a headline grabber, but really, what's the point? Another lobby group with the same intent and purpose will be formed in its absence, if an existing one doesn't take its place instead.

Does the NY AG think that gun rights groups will magically go away?

Financial mismanagement. That's interesting. Could well be something in this, but not sure if the end result will be the NRA dissolving. I could see this being just a hefty fine or manageable restrictions.

Why do I get the feeling that if they were to disband, they would then reform under a new name? United States Rifle Association (USRA) has a certain ring to it, or ARA.

The NRA will never get dissolved but I hope LaPierre and his goons go to jail.

Trump and Republicans think this is a winner politically for them. Dems are coming for your guns again.

Judging by the press conference I just watched, I don’t think she cares. The point is that the NRA and it’s leadership has been doing some seriously underhanded shit and gotten caught.

Not so sure about that. There is a reason they haven't really associated themselves with the NRA as actively as they have in the past. Rumors of corruption and self dealing have been floating around for a while now.

The only reason many folks seem to be NRA members is because of their third party insurance and certifications options, not because they love the NRA s organization so much. I know several very pro gun folks and they think the NRA has been too far gone for a while and that the only reason they are members is out of necessity for aforementioned reasons. With many trade orgs and non profits like that, those programs are in some ways separate branches so I'm sure other gun rights groups are frothing at the mouth to pick them up.

In fairness, Wayne LaPierre is a real PoS, so it'd be great to see him go down.

I will say that Politico article is woefully short on detail.

Reading a few of the AGs tweets, this looks like significant corporate/charitable org malfeasance. It's almost like she's a fan of the NRA and wants to save it from its current leadership. The NRA is taking cues right out the Justin Trudeau playbook!

Is this the same stuff from a former leader that has been brewing for a while, or is it something new?

And that would be exactly the right attitude. Why would the NY AG have an opinion on usefulness/evil of the NRA as an organization? That's a political, philosophical, or whatever question, but it has nothing to do with the rule of law. But of course, this case will be seen predominantly through a political lens, since the NY AG is a democrat and the NRA is aligned more with the GOP. The politicization of justice in the US is pretty worrying.

Bet its a much more boring, reasonable story than the headline.

So fitting that there’s a concealed carry advert on this thread right now for me.

It was really well put together and engaging, but the first five mins of them yapping just grated on me :D Once they got into the Black Panthers stuff, it really took off and I really enjoyed it.
I look at it as the pretentious forward to a really good book, so I just turn the page (skip ahead) to the story. They are excellent story tellers though.
