Calm your tits, we have some good young players ourselves, we will be fine.

Some exceptional talents will come through elsewhere if we miss out, that's the nature of football.
What young players in attack are able to put up the numbers that Sancho has produced?

We need quality options in the final third. If there is one takeaway from the post-lockdown games it's that yes, we have a decent starting XI with absolute shambles on the bench that can't be trusted to turn a game on it's head. We need more if we want to challenge, otherwise, this Solskjaer rebuild won't kick on. It really is that simple.

I don’t understand this kind of thinking.

We should pay what we think he is worth to us, given our current circumstances. If it’s above that sum, move onto the next candidate.

We’ve made too many of these excessive and panic buys over last years. We should only buy players that fit our terms.
What other candidate? The only ones being touted is an injury-ridden Kingsley Coman. It's simply not good enough if we want to get back to the top.

A year and a half is not that short a period though, especially with loans out.

It's every summer saying Jones, Lingard, Mata, Rojo, Pereira etc that gets me. Every year we say they need to go, and every year none do.
Will we shift even 1 of that mob this summer?
Problem is finding a mug to take that lot off our hands.

Easier said than done.

Yes, that’s why they’ll double his wage for a year to make him a bit less homesick.
That’s just not what Dortmund do, every other big player would be knocking their door down if they done that and right now, they can’t afford it!

This just doesn't make sense. Why would they feck about keeping an unhappy player for one year and double his wages? It's not like Ronaldo in 2008, he's not as influential or important for their team. They will probably prefer to look for replacements.

Doubling his wage and selling him after COVID uncertainty is a risky but potentially profitable move. Now is buyers market. Why sell the hottest player on the planet now then? I think, they managed to put some pressure on Woodward

Extending his contract with Dortmund wouldn't lock him in there, Dortmund is a selling club.

If No one buys him this summer, it would be in his interest to extend. He is a young player with many years in him, one unlucky injury would put him in a worse position financially if he only have 1 year left on his contract.

As many others have mentioned, there is no guarantee Covid will be gone next year. The financial impact will be present for another few years one would imagine. Risky game Dortmund are playing.

They did it with lewandowski. They refused to sell him with a year left on his contract to Bayern and gave him a wage increase for his final year to keep him happy.
They didn’t double his wage though and make him earn 6-7M euros more than anyone else. That was also not in the midst of the a global pandemic after posting losses of 40M.

Dortmund are sounding pretty desperate for us to cough up the money.

Keep saying "must be before the deadline or no sale, PLEASE PLEASE GIVE US LOTS OF MONEY"

I think Woodward is sitting there laughing tbh.

Deepthroating information to Howard Nurse.

I love how people are saying they posted losses so are desperate for money whilst ignoring the fact we ourselves posted losses for the final quarter and have taken out a 140m loan to cover those and future losses yet are seemingly able to spend 90m on one player. Dortmund aren’t going bust if they don’t sell Sancho. They don’t need the money at all.

It seems we’re offering 90m plus the usual far out add-ons but Dortmund think they’ll probably get 80m next year anyway so why bother selling this year? He’s their best player and with him they’ll challenge for the league again. Unless Sancho starts acting up and there doesn’t seem to be any indication he’s going to then him staying an extra year isn’t a problem at all. Keep him sweet with a pay rise, promise he’ll get his move next summer and start looking ahead to the new season. That isn’t a bad outcome at all for Dortmund, in fact if I was a Dortmund fan I’d love the idea of it.

Double his wages my arse. This is a kid confident enough to walk away from City as a teenager. There is two outcomes here, either we sign him or he stays at Dortmund until his contract runs out and has his pick of clubs and demands one of the biggest sign on fees that the football world has ever seen. If the lad stays this window then no advisor worth their salt won't tell him to see out his contract and make an absolute fortune for himself.

Will probably be like this for a while. He has been on holiday in the States, we’re in the Europa knockout tournament.

Everyone was going off Dortmund’s cut off date but there’s no need to rush when seemingly we’re the only club able to put up the money this summer.
Who is on holiday?

 No club owners are dumb enough to risk waiting for next season so that they'll get a lot more money (hypothetically), while at the same time will also be spending more money (double!) for the player's wage. Their investment have grown by how many times? this is a good time to cash out and be less worried about the current or future financial climate. This is not your average transfer window.

But of course the media will be briefed that way to cause a transfer drama. But Ed surely knows about this, he eats financial reports for breakfast. That's why he didn't just pay up what dortmund wants. He can still negotiate.

TBF this is clearly not a panic buy, we've been laying the groundwork for Sancho for at least a year, by most accounts. And Ole has clearly identified him as the priority signing, with very few alternatives even in the mix. I agree with your basic premise, that there is a price point where a signing is no longer viable, but in this case it would be a huge misjudgment to miss out on signing a player who ticks as many boxes as Sancho over +/- 10-20 million.

from a rush of "briefings" both positive and negative, to dead silence in the media world. You can really see the outlines of the negotiations taking shape.

The great news is that silence means we are still trying to do a deal. When we pulled out of the dybala saga there were sharp and to the point briefings to the press which ended the bid. We aint getting that yet. We are seeing threats from both sides, yet the "kernel of truth" under the bravado is that they (both sides) want to do the deal and they are seemingly haggling over structure, not actual price.

From this point, we are either getting a "here we go" from Romano or a Simon Stone "MUFC have walked from the negotiations" i can't see the "bravado briefings" continuing.

Keep doing your thing Memphis, light up the CL and make Dortmund come for you

Probably not the right thread for it, but this genuinely makes me happy. I liked Memphis and I'm glad to see him doing well.

The extended title 'White Smoke Over Old Trafford' is misleading , when I seen it I thought the deal was done and dusted , that is what white smoke means when used in this context.

‘Far out’ add-ons? What does that even mean?

Also not sure where you got this info from.. aren't we offering an upfront fee + the rest in instalments? I don’t remember reading anything about add-ons from the most recent reports.

Secondly, let’s say you are right and they are add-ons, they must surely be achievable enough for Dortmund to even accept them. Also, they still equate to more money and specially for a player that Dortmund bought as an investment. Which won’t yield any more returns than it will this summer. Keeping Sancho another year equates to another years of wages + a depreciation in his value.

And I don’t know about you, but regardless of Dortmund not going bust, I don’t think they can afford to lose any money during the current pandemic. They’ll want maximum returns on a player they don’t even plan to keep. Challenging for the title again would be shortsighted from their perspective. What about the years after Sancho leaves? Clubs don’t operate like that. It’s always a long term approach.

Agreed. The inner muppet inside me nearly fell off my chair when I read it. I even messaged my mate and said there is apparently white smoke over OT. Gave him a good laugh though.

Let’s just hope that we are trying to haggle that price down. Otherwise the meltdown on here and to an far is going to be phenomenal :wenger:
