Is Pogba as good as gone?

My God what a tiring thread - come on here to see if there is any news of note on his staying and instead find a bunch of back-and-forth posts tossing around words like Pogba F.C.
Agreed. People can critique Pogba’s past as much as they want. But, Manchester United have a better shot at winning trophies in the next few years if he stays. For that reason, I hope he extends. Get it done Ed.

If we award him a contract of around 350k. It will be yet another in a series of costly mistakes by United management and board since Sir Alex retired. Similar to awarding Rooney 6 years contract in 2013, signing and awarding Sanchez a ridiculous contract and recently giving De Gea a ridiculous contract of 375k a week when he should have been sold.

Agreed, he's a strong player for us but we need to keep a lid on the wage bill and avoid any imbalances.

Exactly. He isn't perfect, but it will only help having him in the team.

Paul needs a new challenge. One that means winning the league title without any real competition and challenging for the CL.

Juve have had one of their worst seasons in recent times losing 7 times still winning the title.

They looked toothless in the CL all season. Would it really be a move to test his boundaries or would it be to just enjoy life really?

Well you seem to have it all worked out that’s for sure.

Well yes, if he wants to leave and go to Juve, it will not be for a new challenge will it?

He stated last summer he wants a new challenge.

Manutd have just presented him with one, a team that is is young, talented and could potentially close the gap on the top 2 in the next year or two with signings.

If that is not a challenge enough for him, then he should leave.

Well he hasn’t said he wants a new challenge under the circumstances you have just described has he? Did he say that this summer? Are all indications not, in light of the conditions you have described, that he now wants to stay?

Okay, the scenario I gave was if he moved to Turin, which is what the chat was about btw.

The summer window has just opened, indications are he will sign a new contract.

No, he hasn't.

And I think he wants a new contract at United now. Which he should get.

That said, the original "new challenge" comment didn't make much sense. He hasn't achieved anything of note since he returned to United. Which certainly ain't his fault exclusively - not by a long shot - but still: you normally move on to a new "challenge" after you have completed one. So, unless he thought being a bit underwhelming in a very underwhelming team amounted to completing a "challenge", again - the comment made little sense. He should've said (if he wanted to be perfectly honest): "Perhaps it's time for me to move on from this shit show".

Perhaps he was just being diplomatic.

Anyway, water under the bridge, etc.

You are over analysing the semantics. If a player in the last 5 years joined Arsenal to ‘win titles’, should they just stay there until they retire and keep trying? The overall point is that the project and challenge he came for hadn’t come to fruition, and did not look like it would, not in his time.

As for those who keep saying he has a part to play in it not working, that doesn’t matter at all. All that matters are his options. Whether you think he deserves it or not, the facts were that if he left United last summer, he would leave to a team that WILL challenge for trophies. Which means that is the choice he has. Stay at United and not challenge, or go to Italy, Spain or France and compete. I don’t know in what world players are supposed to think ‘well, I have played a part in this so therefore....’. Therefore what exactly? Should a relegated player, like say Jack Grealish if Villa went down, not say he wants to love to a PL team because he has to shoulder some blame for Villa not being good enough to achieve their goals? Or Nathan Ake and a host of others who will leave their relegated clubs this summer to stay in the PL, despite contributing to relegation.

All that matters is that they have suitors who think they are better than that. And Pogba did/does. If he were so bad, he simply wouldn’t have the option to say he wants to leave United and go and play for Juve, Real or PSG. But if you can do better, you would do. If Ake couldn’t, he’d still be at Bournemouth.

The ‘loyalty’ from a lot of the players in our squad is borne out of the fact that they are being made to choose between playing for Manchester United and playing for Newcastle United (at best, in many cases). Give a player better options, and we will see how many years they would be happy to remain 6th in the league. I said yesterday, but personally, I want the very best players to get itchy feet if we are underachieving for long periods. If they don’t, then that indicates to me that they aren’t really fussed about winning, and will gladly spend their prime years outside the CL so long as they are being paid handsomely. Ozil, for example, showed where his motivations (and options tbh) lay when he signed a mega deal at an Arsenal that appeared to be going nowhere. De Gea too. And both are showing that they have lost a step. Them looking to go and win trophies may have at least suggested that they had genuine hunger left, but both were bribed to stay at poor teams for record wages. That’s not what you want as a fan, I don’t think.

If Madrid sell Bale and James, they could get the money to make a bid.

Hopefully Pogba is excited with what is being developed with Fernandes/Rashford/Martial/Greenwood/possibly Sancho

Nope, certainly not. You're sold a "project" of some sort when you join - and I see nothing wrong with wanting to move on from an obviously failed project if the chance comes around.

Nor do I expect any loyalty beyond reason from a modern-day footballer.

It was simply (and only) about his (particular) choice of words. And, yes, the reaction those words got from many United fans may have been disproportionate, sure.

United were underwhelming, Pogba himself was pretty underwhelming (on the whole), nothing much of note was achieved - and he wanted a "new challenge". It didn't sit right with many - simple as that.

Would ‘I want to join a better team’ made you feel better? It’s all semantics, it means the same thing and I can’t see why your getting hung up on the specific words. It wasn’t a written speech for a start. The point was, he felt it was time to move on, and for reasons we both seem to agree upon, you can understand why. Because he used the dreaded words ‘new challenge’, everything is different? I don’t see how it matters. If he was asked the next day, he may have used different words. ‘Change of scenery’ perhaps, maybe if he were English he’d have preferred that turn of phrase. But ultimately, the message is the same.

I hear you mate, my bad.
No problem, mate - my initial post was, in fact, pretty much a poor attempt at explaining the general sentiment of certain United fans at the time (not now). And it invited a response - and off we went.

Bottom line: I have no hard feelings towards Pogs for anything he said - and I very much hope he sticks around.

Those are some damn ugly boots :nervous:
Actually beyond blacked out boots or pantofolo d'oro lazzarini's they would immediately be the best looking boot around easily.

Would be even better if they had blacked out the addidas stripes though.
