It's been mentioned a few times in the thread. They spent 45m euro on Mendy last summer. Zidane feels he prefers Mendy and Marcelo as his left back options. Madrid probably feel its one position where they can afford to sell in order to raise much needed funds. If they didn't buy Mendy last summer, I'm pretty certain this kid would be playing left back for them next season after his impressive loan spell.
That's the question, why does Zidane/Madrid prefer Mendy and Marcelo over a 23 year who is supposedly this good. Is he crap defensively or physically not very imposing? You're saying it's addressed but giving preference as the reason.

You must have a complete different memory of Evra to me.
The Evra who had 1 assist total in our league win in 08? 4 assists total in our CL games over his career?
Patrice was very good at what Shaw is very good at. Linking up with the attackers from the halfway line with short passes and quick movements, bringing the ball forward. As soon as he got into space and had to pick out a player?
Not so much. Neither can cross a ball with any quality. Memories can play tricks on people. He was twice as good at defending than he was attacking. Put him in AWB positions when the opposition lets him have the ball to put the ball in and he wouldn't be much better at it.

Rafael didnt play that often? Plus Evra wasnt as attacking as people remember anyway. He did a lot of what Shaw does with quick little build up movements but rarely got to the byline. Rafael was an attacking FB.
I think Shaw is quite good in the final 3rd unlike some others, but Evra was about as attacking as it gets. He played like a winger when we were chasing games and rarely tracked back. Vidic slotted to the left if the ball came that way and covered. I would say he was more attacking that even Rafael, who actually stayed back a bit more than people think.

Agree with the similarities in the playing styles of Shaw and Evra. The difference was in positioning. Evra always played a bit higher up the pitch in general positioning compared to Shaw.

Yep, Evra used to be a winger at first and moved to full back. Nearly all my memories of Evra are of him attacking rather than defending. I even remember him scoring from 3 headers in one season for a full back! Can never forget his top bins against Neuer too!
Yeah his headers in the oppo box!

If a deal can be done for 25m odd, then this will be a good deal.

A bit worrying that apart from Sancho, there seems to be no real links to wingers.

Its probably a good thing shows Sancho is the guy Utd are that intent on getting on and confident enough to sign that alternatives are not a consideration.

Yeah Evra pushed on a lot more. But he was playing in a different team and under a different manager too tbf.

Because they won’t get much from selling Marcelo and they aren’t going to sell Mendy that they just signed last year. I’m pretty sure in ideal world, they would rather sell Marcelo now who is closing to mid 30s. In reality they need to sell one and the realistic one is this guy which they also want to insert buy back option clause.

Not to mention Mendy was literally the player Zidane signed for 50 odd million. It’s his man, who he simply prefers.

This isn’t some trick here, sometimes - especially at clubs like Madrid - pretty good players tend to be available for transfer.

They’ve already sold two other very good fullbacks in the past 12 months - Theo Hernandez and Achraf Hakimi. It wasn’t a trick when they did that, either.

Yeah I don’t see how anyone can have observed his performances in La Liga and be worried that Madrid are trying to pull the wool over any club

I reckon this is an easier deal to make than the DvB one. The price is reasonable and our only competitors for his signature cannot compete with us financially, leaving us the sole team in the running. Wonder why Ole's hesitating. I would guess he trusts Shaw a lot.

I still can't understand why they sold Hakimi. I think he's pretty good.

Even if he loves Shaw, it’s pretty clear that we need another left back. Shaw’s fitness record is really poor. He’s completed 1 full season & he’s been here for 6 years. He averages about 20 appearances per season, so he misses over half the games most years.

Reguilón has no place in the RM. Zidane bets on Mendy, and Marcelo does not want to leave

The best placed is Man. United, but the problem is that they do not want to include a buyback option

⚪ Sevilla insists on a new loan
If they keep insisting on a buy back clause then it’s time to walk away, that’s simply not an option. Better turning our attention to Telles.

I dont mind a buyback clause. Thats tomorrows problem. Having a great LB next year can be a difference between a successful campaign in the Champions League, making the CL again or not etc. We need to focus on being as good as we can possibly be next season. Then whatever happens happens. Focus on the now. Not like we jeopardize the future in a significant way if there's a buy back clause. We just enter the market again. So ya one step at a time.

The sticking point is probably the buy back clause which will likely see us move on from the deal.

Rightfully so.

he is, but you can't really use him in a back four. That's why he'll fit perfectly at Inter, but for Real, he'd have been a square peg in a round hole.
They would do really well with him. It's a good match for them.

What’s really frustrating with Shaw’s injuries is they always seem to be really minor. In the match it always looks like it’s a small knock and he’ll be able to run it off. Then he gets subbed off and we initially think he’ll just miss the next game. Then suddenly he’s out for 2 months!

Just checked his stats in whoscored. It seems he's not that good one on one defending, he's getting passed too easily by player. He has the same number of dribbled passed as Williams and relatively high compare to Shaw, Robertson & Mendy. However, his going forward asset is his dribble successful. Very high compare to Shaw, Robertson & Mendy.

If we did get him, I think his true value is going to come at Old trafford against teams parking the bus. Majority of our games in the premier league will involve our full backs needing to attack more than defend.

Manchester Utd never lose, just run out of time

Evra's final ball was fairly poor (although he still got a goal/assist twice as often as Shaw), but that's hardly the only aspect of being an attacking fullback. He ran that left wing by himself quite regularly, getting forward far more than Shaw has ever done. His natural starting position when we had the ball was quite a bit higher, and once he had the ball he regularly took players on and created attacking positions out of nothing. His first instinct was always to drive us forward. Honestly, it was really only his lack of a final delivery that stopped him reaching an influence on the team like Marcelo or Dani Alves. All three could completely dominate their side of the field and cause chaos to the opposition, but the other two had the final ball to really make the most of it whereas Evra unfortunately didn't. He still played a huge part in keeping us on the front foot though with the way he created space and stretched the play.

Shaw sits deeper and will generally just pass it on as soon as a defender closes in on him. He helps out quite a bit with the build-up from the back and giving the midfielders an extra person to combine with, but the majority of the time he doesn't provide all that much actually going forward. He has the occasional period here and there where it seems to click and he's suddenly being a big influence, but 80% of the time he doesn't do enough.

Probably the cynic in me but what have Real ever done to help us?
I would say if it is true that he has been offered to us it is because we are a rich club and they can get the biggest bang for their buck.

We shouldn't accept any buy back clause, unless it's like £200m or something daft.

Unless we're totally convinced he'll fall in love with United, the Arndale Center, the wonderful Manchester rain and never want to leave of course, then Madrid can put in whatever they like.

Set the buy back at 60 million and it doesn't kick in for 2 years and can be vetoed by the player if he wants to stay.

I'm sure Madrid would go for that....

That's a given in any buy back clause, they can't force him to sign a contract. A buy back just means the club have to accept at an agreed fee.

It's always vetoed by the player. They can't drag him back if he wants to stay at United. Buy back gives them a fixed amount they can offer where United would have to agree, rest depends on the player.

The buyback is merely an insurance policy on Madrid’s part. Let’s say he gets 50 assists for us next season and suddenly he’s worth £100 million. They can then resign a £100 million player for the £30 million buyback and we wouldn’t be able to do a damn thing about it.

They would still have to convince the player to re-sign though. They just skip the negotiation stage With us and go straight to the player.

The buyback is a club to club agreement. The player can still reject/veto the move like with any transfer.

Let’s face it, a Spanish player from Madrid is not going to reject returning to Madrid from United unless we offered a more superior wage package.

Keep seeing things about Alex Telles, his agents apparently flew to Manchester to finalise a deal... is there any truth in this?

I think it’s fair to say we have relatively bad relations with Madrid from a transfer perspective. Ronaldo/Virus issue; De Gea “fax” issue; Morata (being priced higher than Chelsea were and ending up with Lukaku instead. Remember Morata thought the deal was done? He dyed his hair red ) etc...

Would suggest that IF we do get Reguilon without a release clause it would be a big[ger] fee.

I just dont see it. Everything has come down our left side for 3 to 4 years now. Shaw is always bombing forward to the byline. Hes the only player on that side who did / does since Martial and Rashford cuts in all the time.
Shaw really does continuously get to the byline. Thats never been a criticsm of his

Shaw is the secret sauce in our attacking game. His very pacey overlaps from deep panic defences and make room for everyone else.

We were at our attacking best last season when Shaw was in the team and getting forward to support Rashford.

This guy looks like he can do the same job but hopefully isn't as injury prone.
