I did not want to post this in the Lindelof thread. I think that thread should be left alone for Lindelof's performances. There has been a debate ongoing since Smalling left for Italy with some of our posters rightly observing Smalling to be a better defender and giving good accounts why Smalling should be in the team ahead of Lindelof.

I'm in the camp who think they're both not to the standard required if we want to be successful and compete at the very top.

Smalling is a very good defender in the penalty area. I would argue way better than Lindelof in aggression, heading and basic defending. However, football tactics have changed over the last few years. We are now witnessing a possession based game with defending in blocks the new normal. The most successful teams are who's players hunt the ball down like hungry wolves when they lose possession. Forcing teams in possession to panic. Players who are quick and technical are now in demand.

It’s obvious today's defenders are very different from the mindset of those in the past. Heavyweights of the past such as Steve Bruce types would struggle to be successful in today's game. This is the reason players of Smalling's ilk are no longer an item with teams wanting to follow this type of football. Football is now so attack-minded full- backs often spend more time in the attacking half than tracking his runner defensively, the centre-half now needs to operate as a playmaker and start build-up playing out of the back.

Lindelof, I would argue is somewhat underwhelming at defending and decentish at best with the ball compared to Smalling. Smalling does not suit the style of play United coaches are trying to master. Smalling is not being pushed out due to his lack of defending abilities but the changes in the landscape in footballing tactics. Basically, we need to find an upgrade who is both good at defending and playing out from the back.

Losing to Comeback Winning!
Lindelof
  • better on the ball by far
  • better technical abilities
  • better passing
  • better possession play
  • better outside the box
  • play like a midfielder
Smalling
  • better off the ball
  • better physical abilities
  • better defending
  • better in scoring
  • better inside the two boxes
  • play like a defender

At best, both of them can be very good squad players for a top team like United... which we are in name only.

Playing out from the back is overrated. Lindelöf, whilst clearly better than Smalling doesn’t add much to the team with his “passing ability”.

I don’t want to be one of the posters who had gone into meltdown and overreacting mode, but we all know Lindelof isn't good enough.

The reason Smalling has been pushed out has less to do with his inability on the ball, more to do with the fact he is the only one out of Bailly, Rojo or Jones who has any value.

We have too many CBs, those three are terrible, and we can’t even give them away. Lindelof at least stays fit (that’s about all I can say positive about him), Maguire is a good player, but slow.

Smalling doesn’t play as a result of Jones, Bailly and Rojo being at the club. Over the past 6 or 7 years, he’s constantly been written off and replaced, but has always come back in because expensive players haven’t been good enough.

In all honesty I’m not convinced Maguire is that much better than Lindelof and think if we did the same for Lindelof in getting a proper defender along side him he’d probably massively improve. Someone with pace and ability.

Really the only reason I wouldn’t be dropping or looking for a replacement for Harry is because he cost us 80mil. For the sake of the team I’d have Smalling in there right now as he is still probably our best defender. Especially if we are going to play high like yesterday and leave our CB’s to go one on one with attackers. He’s comfortably the best we have at it.

Neither is good enough to start for a top team. And while there, Maguire is not good enough to be the main defender (though could be very good if partnered with something better).

Smalling is far superior to Lindelof, although as Sults says, neither should be starting for us and it is an indicator of how far our standards have fallen. It’s an elementary debate though because Solskjaer has no interest in looking at Smalling. I must say, the Maguire-Lindelof pairing is a laughing stock.

I agree with Sults. However of the two, I will pick Smalling now. We need to stabilize our defense and Lindelof is always a mistake ready to happen.
Till we get an upgrade, let Smalling partner Maguire. He is quicker and good at one-on-one defending. Also he is infinitely better at heading than Lindelof.
With Smalling, a high line can be done as he has recovery pace. Both Maguire and Lindelof are slow and thus always have to back off when they have runners coming at them.

Preferably we’d move on from both. I think they’re about as good as each other.

Fair analysis.

This. Lindelof is the definition of a nothing player
For instance, a calamity like David Luiz has clear very passing (and specially long passing) ability. I have never seen Lindelof display passing that left me impressed. He's a generic player, with no real great ability.

There isn't a single attribute where Lindelof is good at. I think he is among the worst CB to play for us.

Smalling is like Vidic compared to Lindelof.

Lindelof is average on the ball. I will never understand where this myth that he is good with it has come from.
Yeah. He isn't good enough, that's the important point.

Also his ball playing skills are not so good that you can ignore how passive he is.

You play long balls in a high line vs Christopher Smalling you are liable to spend the evening getting bullied. I still argue isn't speed of a CB just as important as passing when playing a high line?

Smalling is that aunt everyone hate but still invites to dinner as she is dependable. Possession football fanatic LvG brought Rojo and Blind. Yet he still relied on mike. Mou brought Bailly and Lindelof. Guess what? Smalling was still there as first teamer.

Ole is doing a mistake here. Hodor is not Stam but he is the best of the lot bar maybe 80m Steve Bruce. On top of that he is rapid and he is not injury prone.

I cant wait until Smalling is sold to Roma so we can move on. Hes not good enough. His positioning is poor, hes easily fooled by good movement, he loses concentration, hes an average passer, and hes shocking on the ball, especially when under pressure. But he can head the ball. Hes never cemented his place in 10 years and successive managers have tried to replace him. The team has to play around him when hes on the pitch and we will never move forward if we have to do that.

Lindelof is not perfect but hes much better than that. He slots seamlessly into the team and at the end of last season was playing better than Maguire. One bad game doesnt change that. We should look for an upgrade but that is not Chris Smalling.

Ask yourself which would get into our competitors teams? Lindelof would at least make the bench at City or Liverpool, and possibly start. Smalling wouldn't get near a top 6 side.

Could say the same about both our CBs to be honest

The club has decided they want ball playing centre backs. Smalling can't do that so is deemed surplus to requirements.

Defensively, he's easily the best defender at the club. He and Maguire would be a far better pairing defensively than Lindelof and Maguire.

Neville was spot on. Being a centre back at United means you'll often be left one on one. They need a modern day Jaap Stam next to Maguire. Big strong fast and a fantastic one on one defender.

I'd actually prefer Jaap Stam at 50ish than Lindelof.

Maguire isn't great, Leicester clearly robbed us. At least he can be dominant in the air.
I was talking about the passing
Agree about ability in the air but his position issues regularly make that redundant. I think we need to replace both of them

At no point has Lindelof slotted in seamlessly. He does stay fit which puts him head and shoulders above Rojo, Bailly and Jones. But that’s hardly saying anything at a standard to be better than.

And yet Smalling has been a regular starter for us, as a top 6 club.

He’s not a great player, and he likely will move on, which you are right will put this to bed.

However, he’s a hell of a lot better than Lindelof - in every respect apart from being able to pass the ball forward. Which whilst Lindelof is comfortably better on the ball, the effect to the team is minimal.

Until last season, where is was shipped out on loan because we couldn’t do anything with Rojo, Bailly and Jones Smalling has always worked his way back into the team. We’ve spent a fortune on centre halves, yet he let getting back into the team, because everyone we bought, including Lindelof wasn’t better than him.

Smalling is the superior player, not like it takes much as Lindelof is crap.

Neither of them is good enough if we want to win titles but gun to head, I'd prefer Smalling. Lindelof isn't even that good on the ball btw, always find it weird to see that part of his game so hyped.

On a different note, I don't think Maguire is all that either. Better than these clowns though so there's that.

I actually think recently Lindelof has been the better CB. If not for his aerial ability I honestly wouldn't keep Maguire in the team.

I feel like defensively the right side of our defence is much stronger than our left. AWB + Lindelof vs Maguire + Shaw

I defended Maguire big time but I'm starting to think I was blinded by hope.

Good defenders just seem to be there at the right moment to snuff out danger. Maguire seems to always be one yard off. He gave the ball away in much worse areas of the pitch than Lindelof yesterday, with really simple passes too. Being saved big time by McT in one particular instance. The hate for McT yesterday was an absolute joke, he offered more than all our defensive players and had to recover the ball when Pogba lost it a few times.

I feel Shaw and Maguire both seem to struggle to 'keep up' with the action. In fact AWB does too but he is saved by his pace and long legs.

De Get actually did really well in the sweeper keeper role yesterday, obviously starting further off his line and coming out quicker.

I honestly think we'd have a better defense this season if we got Gabriel and started Mengi alongside him.

I'd genuinely be tempted to start Smalling next to Lindelof because Smalling would cover for Lindelofs aerial weaknesses which is all Maguire offers at the moment.

Are these all bad defenders or is our defensive coaching poor?

Lindelof's ability on the ball should only come into the discussion when he stops giving away goals so cheaply. He's made big mistakes across last half dozen games - soft goals given away.

If we want to play with attacking full backs we need aggressive CBs who win the ball high, and are comfortable with 1 vs 1s down the flanks. As we saw yesterday Lindelof can't do that (neither Maguire).

Despite the vitriol that Smalling has had from the caf over the years, I've always maintained that he's our best CB.

And guess what, he still is.

I’m not sure what we do can be classified as playing out from the back. Yes, we cover the basics by playing short passes and not going long to the target man. But is it really incisive passing with a view to a build up? Not sure any passes from Maguire and Lindelof are those which can’t be made by any PL footballer. It’s not like they pick out through balls or speed up the tempo. If Smalling defends better, then start him. Let’s not be under any illusions that removing Lindelof would make the team devoid of creativity. Bigger and better names than him are failing to do so.

Lindelof fits in seamlessly because the team does not have to play around him. It doesnt matter if Smalling can tackle, as long as the team has to second guess what he will do he will never have a place in the side, assuming we want to move forward of course. On or off the ball, he is unpredictable to his own teammates because he doesnt position himself properly or read the game well. Hes a much a symptom of our current state as Fellaini ever was.

Every manager has known this, and every manager has tried to replace him. Through fitness and reliability he has worked his way back in, hes a good 1v1 defender sitting behind the ball. Stick 2 midfielders to track movement ahead of him and let him sit in and tackle, but its sticking a little plaster on a gaping wound. Managers have been too scared to stick with a vision, reverting to pragmatism and the conservative 6 man defence every time we suffer a setback. Klopp and Pep did not abandon their vision and suffered for it initially, but look where it got them. Ole has the fan support to finally rip the plaster off and properly fix things as until we do that nothing will change for us. Lindelof is not perfect but we do not have to change what we are trying to do to accommodate him.

Neither of Lindelof or Maguire are good defenders. Both are slow and clumsy. Maguire running into his own players, and Lindelof clumsy on the ball and off it.
