You don't rotate a settled CB pairing. That's the big thing. Last season we were better defensively but it was not because of Lindelof. AWB played a big role and so did Maguire.

He didn't have AWB to bail him out yesterday and he fecked up massively. Agreed that he is not THIS poor but he is a bang average defender nonetheless and has no stand out qualities which shout out that he should be a starter for us.
So is Maguire. Both of them need replacing.

Plenty of the car called all his weaknesses, when he came. We still played him loads. The we signed Maguire and many of us said he'd be a terrible partner for him.

What i don't get, if we can so easily call these out, why the club and coaches and continue to flog this dead horse?
Lindelof cant be more than a backup for us. I read a post the other day where Gary Rowett said that he was surprised that Man Utd signed him for that price as a few months earlier Birmingham had scouted him and deemed him to shit to play championship ball. Too often beaten in one on ones. Third goal is outstrengthed by Zaha last night and turned oh so easy. He was outpaced and out of position for the cross that led the first goal, And gives away the penalty because he cant close down quick enough which gives space for the ball to rise to his arms Rather than bounce of his lower body.

We were wide open last night, palace found space between the lines and ran at Maguire and Lindelof with pace every attack.

We need someone more mobile and pacy out there, would rather see Bailly in than Vic. With his injury record however, we need a signing. Upemacano and Koyate both fit that bill and are a reasonable price from a selling club, get the deal done

So you want the CEO to be deciding which players are signed rather than the football people at the club?
That’s the modern way - but not the CEO the director of football. It just so happens that Woodward is both at United.

make no mistake though mourinho pressures Woodward into signing lindelof - who turns out to be completely useless. A proper DOF would have said no thank you.

You cannot bin your 80 mil pound buy and club captain after one season. Plus with a better partner, he will also be better. Currently Lindelof is the biggest problem in that back line and unfortunately for us, even though we have the solution to that problem in our squad, we won't do anything to fix it this season.

I think some of our fans don't actually watch our defending and just lump the entire defence together when things go wrong. Macguire has a had a handful of games where he has made slight errors, similar to most good centre backs. He is not perfect, but he is a really good centre back that is forced to take on more responsibility than most do since he's playing with someone who takes none. He always has to cover for Lindelof's aerial difficulties and lack of strength, which always forces him to leave certain areas exposed. In our new system where AWB is higher up and cannot always cover Lindelof, it's more exposed now. Macguire is also forced to spend most of his time in defence making passing decisions as Lindelof makes no decisive decisions there either. It's literally a one man back line. In fact one could argue, the errors Macguire has made has been a result of being tasked to babysit Lindelof. Lindelof can't make a tackle and is forced to be passive as he doesn't have the skills to be aggressive. People need to see this and stop blaming others.
The only reason Smalling worked with Lindelof is because Smalling could cover for Lindelof because of his athleticism and pace. Maguire doesn't have that so when Lindelof plays badly we're most exposed.

I agree.

Whoever said Wan-Bissaka was the one making him look better than he is, hit the nail right on the head.

You’re overreacting because of a very poor game from him. Last season we had least conceded goals in open play of all PL teams, despite quite a few DDG howlers. You don’t achieve that if one of the CB was as poor as you describe. But I fully agree it’s a huge problem that the other CBs are a huge problem. They are always injured and not very good. We would need a third CB who can stay fit, who can compete for a CB spot and also to rotate CBs.
You do if your right back is the best defensive fullback in the league and you have a much better CB to your left. Yes De Gea had some mistakes, so did Lindelof.

Woodward isn't the DOF. He doesn't decide which players we sign. He plays the same role that CEOs at clubs with DOFs do. Our DOF role is currently split between multiple people.

Our setup changed during/before Mourinho's last season.

As I wrote, least conceded goals in open play last season. You don’t get the best stats if one CB is super poor. That’s just not going to happen. And AWB was very good defensively, at least first half of the season, not so good second half. But it is still Lindelof who most of the is covering behind AWB and not the opposite. Also I still believe he was our best defender after the COVID break.

Appalling defender. I'd have Smalling over him, not that he's great either.

He's not super poor. Where did I say he is? He just isnt as good as the rest of the defense. He's the weak link. He's fine as cover, especially in the 2nd half of the season when he tends to play okay.

He’s the only one that’s fit.

We need to get rid of Bailly, Jones and Rojo first.

At the present time we have Maguire, Smalling, Lindelof, Tuanzebe and the three misfits. That’s 7 senior centre backs. You can understand the reluctance from the club to keep buying centre backs.

Edited to confirm. I think Lindelof is crap. Obviously not as bad as Bailly, Jones and Rojo - and he should be nowhere near a regular starter.

Would any other club in Europe pay £20m for Lindelof? No chance.

What baffles me is why Ole likes him so much. Any other manager would've made signing a CB a top priority but you get the feeling that Ole is happy enough with him starting despite his many flaws.

While he's improved massively since his first season, it doesn't change the fact that he's not a PL defender. Like many have said, he's the softest defender I've ever seen play for us. Defenders are meant to strike fear into strikers but in Lindelof's case you get the impression they can't wait to engage in a duel with him whether aerially or on the floor.

Watch the Chelsea Liverpool game and you'll see why Ole likes him. He is good at what is expected from a modern CB, which is mostly defending by keeping possession and reading the attacks to collect the ball before they start. Hes easily as good as either Chelsea defender, and would most likely be starting today next to VVD if he played for Liverpool.

I’m not watching the game, but from the lineups I assume Fabinho is partnering VVD? Lindelof wouldn’t get in front of him, or Gomez or Matip if fit.

Lindelof wouldn’t be a starter for any other club in the top half of the PL.

No chance, he's the worst CB at any of the top 6 clubs because of how unreliable he is at defending, his main job as a CB. He can't handle pace, he's not strong, he's inconsistent and he's not even that good at playing out from the back either. All of his ball at the feet stuff is standard for a professional footballer. Mourinho and Benfica mugged utd off massively.

Well then.

Fabinho is a midfielder.
Christensen was caught napping and got himself sent off with a brain dead recovery 'tackle'.
Zouma is just shit. Hes already passed the ball straight out for a throw in on multiple occasions.

Lindelof would be on the pitch. Without a doubt.

Says a guy who thinks there's a Macguire playing for us....

But for real though you are right, I agree with you.
I also bet Maguire would look so much better if he played alongside Smalling or Baily who are both a lot quicker than Lindelof, more physical and just a much better complement to Maguire all around.
Heck last year whenever Baily played is when I felt most comfortable about our defense.

Lindelof is just not a defender, doesnt have the heading, the physicality, needs to be replaced ASAP. Smalling and Baily are much better. Maybe even Mengi who knows.

Missed my point. Without watching the game, I don’t know for sure who is partnering VVD - and therefore assume it’s Fabinho. I’d take him, and any of the players playing in defence over him every day of the week.

Aside from VVD, they are average defenders. Lindelof aspires to be average. No one in the top half of the PL would buy him as a starter.

Sorry, that wasn’t really directed to you, but to some other posters. He was poor yesterday but I think he’s fine overall. Would be good with one more CB however instead of just two who can stay fit.

It's unbelievable you are still trying to defend Lindelof. IIRC you're from Sweden, you like Swedish players and you are a big fan of Lindelof.

Nobody here is overreacting or tyring to scapegoat Lindelof over one game. It's the culmination of a bang average player getting first team minutes over 2 years. That's on Ole as much as on Lindelof's incredibly limited ability.

You can like the player, no fecking problem, football is not a science, it's entertainment but your refusal to accept how poor the guy is in comparison to his performance is toxic to the rest of us. As a fanboy and I will say that because that's what you are, you should be staying away from this thread and just quietly bite your tongue seeing your hero get the justified criticism he is getting.

Look at the clip below.

I said it in the previous performance thread that I didn't 'blame' him much for De Jong's goal but I was furious with his pathetic covering/defending for the first goal. Low and behold the exact same thing happened yesterday.

This is just unrefutable evidence. How can you still be so blind and bias?

You’re being ridiculous. I wrote he had a very bad game but was good over the last season. You call that blind and biased.

You have honestly never written anything ever that indicates that you understand anything at all about football, so I can’t really take anything you write seriously.

I watched the game and Fabinho put in a better performance at CB than I've ever seen from Lindelof. He wouldn't make the travelling squad there. He's no better than Christensen or Zouma and its known that Chelsea have a poor defence so that's hardly a plus point.

Manchester Utd never lose, just run out of time

To be fair he probably was the best after the lockdown. AWB and Maguire were both poor after the break, and although Shaw was in very good form he got injured and we ended up playing Williams who was also poor. It basically left Lindelof as our best by default even though he was only decent.

He is good reader of the game, uses the ball well and does make some good interceptions on the deck, however he lacks pace and strength and gets bullied too easily, that said some of the good things he does do he is stretched to his absolute max physically to achieve it, he was the root cause of 2 goals yesterday.

To be fair I also think you underrate our players’ performances a little. During this period where you think every defender was poor except Lindelof who was decent, we were unbeaten and got 5 clean sheets out of nine matches. It’s not too bad.

You see. That is not true. It's like when people come at Pogba when he plays with Mctominay in midfield. The standards are different. Macguire has soo much more responsibility in defence than Lindelof. If he made the type of mistakes on each play that Lindelof does he would be skewered. Literally loses every aerial battle, uncomfortable when being played one on one, takes no responsibility in the build up, always poorly positioned and having to be bailed out by both Macguire and AWB. With Macguire and another centre back( Jones, Baily etc) we would have conceded a few less goals imo/similar. With Lindelof and one of Jones or Bailly, we would have a worse defesive record than Chelsea.

He needs to be dropped asap. Let him do some introspection and improve some areas of his game in training ground. We need a fast defender who attacks the ball both on ground and in air.

He is a good defender, but get exposed by our terrible system. We are barely defending like a team properly.
Having Pogba in front of him leaves him more exposed as well, but could work if we pressed better as a unit.
Him and Maguire has had nightmares since Pogba was back and the extra defense we had with a strong midfield was broken down.
