Seeing this bumped and with RE2 remake out this week, it reminded me of this depressing bullshit...

Beautifully remade cutscenes on the Fox engine, all for pachinko machines.

Konami are cruel bastards.

I still think the microwave tunnel is one of the best bits of gaming of all time.
Remind me what that is again? I thought the graphics were incredible for Metal Gear 4.

Played and finished 1 - 3 over the last few weeks and it really is an incredible experience.

Tried Peace Walker on recommendation and really couldn’t get in to it. Excited to get back into 4 when I get hold of a PS3 but in the meantime playing Ground Zeroes for the first time time and it really is an incredible jump in quality gameplay wise.

I played quite a bit of Phantom Pain a couple of years ago but the level design of Ground Zeroes seems a bit better in my opinion.

Probably on my own with this but i’d argue that I would have taken a game without the open world and base building and instead build upon Ground Zeroes with the classic linear MGS style.
Not on your own at all, it's probably a popular opinion. MGS V had stellar gameplay mechanics and production values but lacked the character and charm of previous games. I'd have sacrificed the open world and base building for a carefully crafted, linear design in a heartbeat.

I thought MGS 4 was the worst. There are some good bits but it's such a grind at times. 1 and 3 are some of my favourite games of all time, 2 was very clever and intelligently made, and I thought 5 had great gameplay but was obviously incomplete and a bit of a let down.

The ending of MGS3 (Volgin/Shagahod) in particular reminded me of what a slog MGS4 would be. I really want to but don’t know if I have it in me. For now I’ve started MGS V again to hopefully finish it this time.

Ironically, the game needed more bits like the prologue. Epic.

MGS1 is a masterpiece. Probably the first video game I played where the story was worthy of TV or film quality.

MGS2 was highly anticipated understandably. People got initially annoyed by the bait and switch by Kojima to essentially have Snake as the playable prologue bit, then Raiden as the main character. I always had a feeling that Kojima had seen Resident Evil 2 and thought he could make his own Leon, but it was very well made once you got over that.

MGS3 is probably the best one in terms of the camo mechanics, the different setting being in the forest as well as facilities, the story wasn't tied to all that nanomachines hulabaloo. It didn't need you to play any Metal Gear even as far back as the first Metal Gear games. I still remember looking up on the official site seeing the character renders of Ocelot, The Boss and Sokolov, who weren't named at the time, and wondering who they were.

MGS4 has it's moments of being a good game. It's a huge movie essentially and I think Kojima did his best with tieing up everything storywise, because he definitely didn't plan for Metal Gear to have as many games as it did at the time.

MGS5 is a flawed masterpiece game-wise (the open world aspect working well) but kinda sucks storywise in my opinion especially the ending. Kojima just redoes what he did in MGS2 in that he provides a metacommentary/fourth wall thing to the player saying "No, you're Snake!"... Also the game is technically unfinished.

Twin Snakes is like MGS1 directed by John Woo, with MGS2 graphics

Peace Walker is a decentish experience. I don't think you'd miss much in terms of gameplay. It's kinda basic MGS in a way... Nothing too special and anything to grab you unless you like the base building aspect. The story is actually part of the MGS canon and leads into MGS5.

Elvis' love for this series instantly makes me like him more.

Metal Gear is wonderful. People complain about the cutscenes and bloated/unrealistic stories but I love it all. It's like gamings version of a superhero /bond film, but better and more immersive (given you know, GAME).

1 was obviously iconic.

2 for me was a stylistic and a visual revelation. Yes playing as Raiden was disappointing but it was still an excellent game and from technical viewpoint the game was jaw dropping a the time. I remember playing the demo with the intro and the ship chapter with Olga at the end feck knows how many times.

3 was among the best games of all time IMO. A complete masterpiece with some of the best bosses I've ever faced in gaming.

4 was also fantastic IMO and gets a bad rap. Lots of cutscenes but I didn't mind. It was all superbly done and old Snake, the gadget etc were great.

5 was combination of excellent and bizarre. The gameplay was the best of the series by a mile. But the story and cinematic immersion was weak and the worst of the series. The repeat missions were absurd as well. But the gameplay, again, was absolutely fantastic. Probably the best Stealth gameplay to date in any game.

Managed to get a copy of MGS4 off eBay. Now I’ve got it I can’t wait to play it.

MGSV gets really good when the episode reaches the 20s. I regret not playing that far the first attempt. I feel like a lot of the content before was just to pad out the game, but from the Code Talker mission onwards it feels a lot more like MGS to me.

Just finished Chapter 1. Heard there’s some stuff I need to do to play through chapter 2 missions. It’s not going to be grindy I hope?

I'd love if they recreated MGS2 on the PS4. I remember trying to replay it a few years ago and the controls are horrifying.

Will check it out.

Also,I've just download MGS for the PC.Hopefully its clean and doesn't give my PC any crap.
I've read that there's a fixed version somewhere which sorts out a lot issues on PC. Best bet is to check reddit.

Playing MGS on my PS classic is what got me back into the series. While dated it still has a charm that the others don't.

I remember binge-playing through MGS2 when I was a teenager, literally spent all morning and afternoon on it. I remember my parents came in and told me to get off the PS2 as I'd been on it all day

Literally five minutes later, I was on the Arsenal Gear segment where the codec goes wacky, and I get the codec call from Colonel saying "Raiden, turn the game console off right now! Cut the power!" (because Kojima loves fourth-wall breaking)

At the time I legitimately freaked out, paused the game and stared at the screen completely dumbfounded  and then Colonel calls you again with "Honestly though you've been playing for a long time. Don't you have anything else to do with your time?" which at that point I was like :houllier:

Think everyone was freaked out by that bit. It's not my favourite MGS but it was way ahead of its time. Probably has the best jokes in the series too (going into the women's toilets and then getting a call from Rose  )

I couldn't put myself through those cutscenes again.
I’m playing it again at the moment and it’s honestly not that bad. I think there’s just as much gameplay as previous games, it’s just a shit ton more cutscenes.

Don’t really like the battling militia sections that much, especially Middle East at the start.

South America was a lot better, and Eastern Europe is the point I’m at the moment and it’s very enjoyable.

From what I remember, Shadow Moses should be next. So excited!

I managed to play through it, but gave up trying to replay 3 when it seemed like I needed to press several buttons and actually fire a shot just to aim down sights.

I used to love MGS, but replaying them with the horrific controls and the horrors of Kojima disappearing up his own arse in MGS5 has left a bit of a bitter taste. He had to remind you that he made the game every chance he got. There's breaking the 4th wall, then there's breaking immersion just to tongue yourself in the arse. Going back and replaying them I saw he was always at it. For a man that doesn't know how thumbs work, he loves himself a bit too much.

I didn't know this thread existed. Now I'm happy it does. My favourite game series ever. I would love a MGS 1 remake. Wish konami would bring out a collection of MGS 1-4.

I'm sick of remakes but I would suck Kojima's dick for that. Or I guess... everyone at Konami now.

As it should be. MGS belongs to PlayStation!
It shouldn't and it doesn't, exclusives will always be anti-consumer. Anyway, MGS 1, 2 and 5 are not exclusives so this series is far from "belonging to PlayStation".

And I played MGS 3 and 4 on PC on emulators so they can feck themselves with exclusivity. :)
