At the start of the summer, you don’t know what the cost of these players are. Should we have paid £80m for Grealish, £41m for Ake?

It’s not deflecting the blame at all. There’s not a single manager who would expect a club to go any buy all those targets, as others have pointed out at a cost close to £300m!
We didn't need to get all of them but at least one of the manager's top targets would have been nice. The board is doing a horrendous job for the club but they are doing great at looking out for the Class B shareholders.

Hows it a Woodward problem ? Blame him for not getting a right winger but not for not getting Sancho, Jack and Dalot.

Ole has messed up big time in terms of transfers. The cultural reset thing has been a total failure . So if anyone thinks twice about Ole's targets, I wouldn't blame him.
I'm sorry but this is utter nonsense. You could basically apply this 'logic' to every single deal we did under Moyes, LVG n Jose too then. Never Woodward's fault then?

And if you have a real problem with Ole.....who was it that employed him? Woodward. So it was his decision that led us here anyway. Everything traces back to that numpty. We've failed for 7 years under 4 different managers and not even got close to a title race once.

Villa’s demands for Grealish were outrageous for a good player not a game changer. We’d all be complaining if we paid £70 million plus for Grealish. VDB is a great alternative, proven in Europe and showing flashes of being a game changer already.

Sancho feck it, been discussed to death and it’s never happening unless Dortmund change their tune next year.

Ole openly raised concerned about the lack of quality of depth in our squad. Adding Cavani, VDB and Telles improves us greatly in terms of having real quality in our squad, so at least that has been achieved. We aren’t a title contender but no reason why we can’t finish in the top 4.

We still dont have a first team RW and there are people here defending Woodward for not signing expensive players this summer. What a joke.

Fail to get top 4 and get sacked. Achieve top 4 and don't get backed. Welcome to the Ed Woodward show.
Do you not think that the current squad on paper is good enough to finish top 4? If so then ole needs to make it work and if he can’t then does that mean we question his managerial ability?

Grealish is an incredible player who will hit great heights this season. VDB isn't too bad an alternative though and since he is our player I fully back him.

Lack of a first team RW again is what makes the window such a failure. Why not move on from Sancho earlier and go for an alternative if we don't want to pay up? The club's treating fans like idiots.

Because we have lawyers and bankers making football decisions for us during recruitment.
Yeah, and that dirty corporate purpose is now being expressed through all facets of the club and you feel it everywhere as a supporter. I don't like supporting the club because when I do, I feel like I'm implicitly supporting the Glazers, and not the heritage of the club I fell in love with.

Compare that with City or Chelsea; though they are oil duped clubs, the core is a very professional version of a well managed corporation, so at least their output is just bland. But Manchester United just feels dirty, the worst expression of the club I've felt since Ron Atkinson.

I dont think I'll be able to support another club, too late in my life and way too entrenched to make that switch. But aide from OGS, I really dont like supporting United these days. And even the experience of liking OGS is sullied by the toxicity OleOUTers infuse the club with.

Was unlucky that Villa stayed up on the last day increasing Grealish’s price. He’s absolutely worth 70m though for me, ticks every box.

no way.. grealish would not have cost £85+m
Well, we can't know exactly, since we didn't put any offers in. But, as far as I remember, Aston Villa said they value him at £80 million.

Exactly this. And this is not new either. Remember when we spend the whole summer targeting Kroos and Fabregas, and ended up with Fellaini?

Woodward and co, suck at negotiation and transfers. Its obvious. They get fleeced all the time. That's why a competent DOF is so so important. As long as we dont get one, I have no faith in our recruitment.

I dont mind not spending 100M on a single player. But atleast be competent in the market. We just have to look at Chelsea/Liverpool to see how efficient they are.
Not just that, they initially tried to get Fellaini and Baines with a low-ball joint bid before overpaying for Fellaini on his own.

Why go for Grealish (who I really like by the way..) when we have Pogba and Fernandes? Can only think it's a replacement for Pogs which may make sense.

But it isn't a priority. We haven't four top quality defenders.

Can't OGS see that?

I know a lot would strongly disagree but personally it was a correct decision not spending 120m on Sancho when you consider the young talented players we have signed on the deadline day.

The thread is, as expected, turned into Ole vs Ed/board when it is pretty clear both could do their job much better.

And our midfield has a dearth of top class midfielders too, right?

You still haven't answered my question. Hows not getting Sancho and Grealish a woodward problem ? Did you expect 200m to be spent during a pandemic?

We didn’t get Sancho but getting two highly rated young RWs in Diallo and Pellistri could be viewed as smart and shrewd moves in the future. Unfortunately everyone’s expectation was Sancho or bust, so any move would after that was going to be met with criticism. Dembele or Sarr and you’d still have fans complaining.

I’m not defending Woodward or the Glazers, they’re cnuts, but we should all know by now how they operate. Getting some quality depth in the squad was the bare minimum and it was achieved. It’s up to Ole now to get the best out of our squad.

Moyes - none of his targets were acquired, apart from Fellaini hahaha
LvG - probably 50-50 I would say
Jose - nuff said about his latter years though he was backed in Year 1 with all 4 of his targets.
Ole - got Bruno but nobody else.

We have a track record of transfer failure with everyone except LvG
LVG was the one complained he was shocked that UTD couldn't get his targets

This is a club which openly lied about appointing a DOF. This is a club which made an irrational decision of appointing a caretaker as a permanent manager. Since then our chances of progress have been set back by how many years, only time will tell.

We really went for Reguilon didn't we, it was the clauses that scuppered it. It all comes down to money doesn't it. They have given him the cheap options.
No Reguilon has a buyback clause that Madrid can operate in 2 years and was about £35 mill. Reguilon already said he wants to play for RM in the next few years, and thats why the deal was stopped. Reguilon wanted to come, but basically it was a glorified loan

What a utter nonsense. So it is manager's fault that our negotiators don't know how to negotiate. If you didn't have enough funds for ssncho then let the manager know and go for plan B. Maybe next time when we advertise for managers post we should also let them know that they should be expert in negotiations, and should also know how to run the club, considering it's never Woodward and the board's fault.

This is the end game isn't it. The board now feeding stories that it was Ole who pushed us to go for Sancho or bust, and Ole's camp responding saying the board didn't deliver on any of his targets. It went exactly the same way with LVG and Mourinho. Might as well sack him now and get it over with, and get the next manager on the merry-go-round.

I am currently of the opinion that Ole is not the man to lead us into the future, but this take is very odd. Ole doesn’t determine the price. You’re asking why two of England’s most creative and talented players are expensive. Ole wants the best players so we can be the best, presumably as all managers do. Grealish was not 80 million when identified as a target as Villa were likely on the way down. And Sancho was identified when leaving city, but they wouldn’t deal with us. There’s no point targeting players who don’t improve us or won’t cope with the demands of playing for us. As we’ve seen repeatedly for the last 8 years.

It's not difficult to believe that Ole wanted a RW and a CB considering everyone and their nan knows they're they two biggest areas we need to improve on.
Ole bought them last year Maguire and AWB so thats on him that they havent worked out

Im not totally convinced by Sancho, yes he's got all the skills but to me he's another Balotelli, more ego than industry, more attitude than actual product and more about himself than his team. Reminds me of a certain similar midfielder we bought a few years ago.

In the current climate spending close to 200 million on Grealish and Sancho would have been bordering on negligent! Their clubs weren’t going to negotiate either!

I think the signings are exciting and under the right management should comfortably keep us in the top three.

Its just like last year we went for Maguire for 80mil and AWB for 50mil and they werent the best players in those positions. Its just lazy scouting tbh.

I think he isn’t knee jerking after the start of this season because our defensive record last season was one of the best in Europe.

Now I know as well as anybody they have been shambolic the start of this season but it’s hard to prioritise a position we were relatively strong in a matter of months ago.

I don’t particularly rate Lindelof or Bailly so I would have liked an improvement to partner Maguire. However the manager may feel confident we can recapture that defensive solidity of last season (we shall see.)

If the manager wants the best players but he doesnt have to think about the price then he could ask for Messi Ronaldo and DeBrune and when the board wont sanction the buys he can moan they aint backing him. He surely knows the financial constraints of what is available and then picks his targets in this way. By asking for 2 players that were going to cost £160 mill minimum and £200 mill maximum it was obvious it wasnt going to happen.

We didnt have 250m to spend. So Ole's list is pretty unrealistic, maybe it was on FM
Ole didn't ask for Neymar, Mbappe ffs. Also, if his list were unattainable then why waste 3 months on Sancho and then panicking and signing some young players. Let the manager know, look this is the budget and Sancho is not possible.

Sancho was possible, but not for over 100m. The manager himself may have been the one trying to wait and hope Dortmund cave in.

No club was going to buy Sancho or Grealish this summer for these prices. Rewind a couple of months and see what people thought they would cost or what the maximum is we should spend on them and compare what the selling clubs wanted.

So you are saying Ole was the one who asked the board to wait for dortmund to cave in, that cannot be true. Why would Ole put extra pressure on himself by saying hey let the negativity build. Woodward and Judge are master of incompetence so no surprise it was another summer of incompetence.

True. Although I have trouble believing this article, seems like the author just made it up for clicks.

If we had a competent DOF, and Ole was like "I want Sancho and Grealish", he would have been immediately told "Bro you are getting VdB and Chiesa, we dont have funds lel. But we can get it done before the season begins".

And we would have actually moved and got the players, rather than dilly dallying till the deadline day like always. If the manager makes silly demands, you need a DOF to set the record straight right from the off, and get him his players asap. What is happening now is Woody and co(because they are idiots) chase these stupid transfers and waste time, and then make panic buys.

feck man, I'm so sick of the Utd recruitment. I dont care who is to blame, but its rotten to the core. We need to let go of this antiquated Manager-CEO model, and get a DOF asap.
I think Ole would have told the DOF i need to strengthen RW and CM and the DOF would have looked for the players suitable and affordable. Ole wouldnt have had a choice.

So we were never in for Sancho or Grealish, like ever, because when Ole gave Woodward the targets in early summer, he asked Ole to shove it *** because they were all unrealistic.

Sounds pretty realistic. The whole transfer window was a lie. We were never trying for anyone.

Nonsense, he is levels above the other centre halves. Lindelöf does ok most of the time but we all know he isn't the long-term partner for Maguire. Bailly is never going to be good enough & Tuanzebe looks the most interesting long term partner but he seems to have major issues getting himself fit.

The biggest issue I have with Maguire is him getting dragged over to cover Shaw's out of position arse all the time. I'm hoping we'll see him able to relax & focus on his own job with Telles dropping into the defence instead of Shaw.
So VVD doesn't cover for the Liverpool FBs? Lindelof doesn't cover for AWB? It's only Maguire who has to do that? And how much of Telles have you seen?
