This epitomises our disastrous transfer policy over the last years for me. At least most of our incomings were good players and upon signing the reaction was positive or ok (only after problems began). But I have not met a single person who thought giving Jones or Rojo new contracts at the time or keeping Romero now was a good idea.
1. Jones was given a new 4+1 contract in Jan 2019 after Ole arrived. After 8 years of known injury problems. I think that when fit he is good enough for a backup defender and he is homegrown - but he never is actually fit.
2. Rojo was given a new 3y contract in 2018 on relatively high wages, being a backup mostly for 3 years before that. Probably the justification was not to lose him on a free - but we will do just that after 3 years of paying him higher wages (which we gave him ourselves!) and him hardly playing - which could perfectly be foreseen, I cannot imagine that clubs were lining up for him to pay us much in 2018 let alone now.
3. Romero is someone whom (a) we do not need (b) does not want to be here (c) clearly deserves an amicable farewell from us due to being great 2nd gk and never complaining, (d) could easily be sold if we reduced our demands and (e) we will lose for peanuts or free anyway, maybe whilst paying his wages if he gets offered a context in Jan.
Baffling. Maybe I am missing something but truly baffling. At least with most of incomings there was some defendable logic, but not with those 3 cases.
