Southgate has come in for criticism on here but who would you have as manager?

Top 2 picks if I could pick anyone would be either Klopp or Guardiola

Mourinho - could be a good gig for him and Mourinho in small doses might get a tune out of England's footballers

Brendan Rogers - could be a tricky appointment but has done well with mediocre footballers

Eddie Howe - would be Mr. England and the Brexit choice. Did well at Bournemouth for a few years until recently and might be OK.

Chris Wilder - similar to Howe but in more in vogue.

Dyche, I think he would use the best of the current Crop including those at the less glamourous clubs

I wouldn't replace him yet. I don't agree with a lot of Gareth's decisions, but I think he deserves to stay for now. At least for another major competition. I think he's earnt it.

I’m not a massive fan of Southgate.

but how much of an impact can an get international manager actually have?

I don’t see that Jose, Klopp it Pep would have enough time to implement their style of play on an international team.

there have been perhaps a couple of questionable selections from Southgate, but every manager will have those questions.

he’s brought through a lot of young players, and whilst we haven’t won anything, we have a good team, and he hasn’t done anything wrong.

Would have sacked Southgate after the loss to Spain in the Nations League, after a World Cup where England were quite poor in finishing 4th.

I would have been wrong to though. There’s no one realistically I would sack him for now who would want the job.

His team selection and 5 at the back system this season has been shocking.
I think they go 5 at the back because the defenders and ‘keeper are pretty poor, so they have extra protection. They also need an extra full back (Walker at centre back) to make up for Trippier and Alexander-Arnold not being able to defend, but being picked for their attacking contributions.

I don’t mind Southgate. The squad seemed really close and there seemed to be a good atmosphere in the camp, although it has shown recent signs of going tits up.

Not sure, but maybe the football is not attractive enough.
Or maybe people just love to moan for the sake of doing it.

Agreed on Mourinho, because he can help England deal with their weakness at CB and Kane, Sterling and Sancho are all well-suited to playing on the counter. Might pick Dier though.

Wilder is interesting. His system is probably too complicated for a big team to risk for international football, but maybe a team like Scotland with wingbacks and midfield depth and no wingers should give him a shot and a few years to drill it in.

Wilder's England:

------Sterling----------Kane------------- (Rashford, Sancho, Greenwood, Ings)
------Grealish--------Henderson------(Saka, Foden, Maddison, Mount, JWP)
----------------Phillips---------------------- (JWP)
Chilwell-------------------------------TAA (Saka, James,)
------O'Connell-Coady-Rice--------- (Maguire, Walker, Mings)
-------------Henderson----------------- (Ramsdale)

Couple Sheffield keepers to organize and O'Connell gets in at England's weak spot of left-footed CB. Phillips is the best passer of the ball available as a 6 so he's the Norwood. Went with Henderson and Grealish as the CMs who also move wide but Mount, Saka (Arsenal fans all say he's suited to a role like this most of all) and JWP (most like Lundstram) all make sense too. Sheffield also used to play with a 10 in the Champo at times so could play Maddison or Foden there or even Sancho.

Coady has organized a 3 man at the back system so I went with him over Rice, who definitely starts somewhere.

I don't hate it but I don't like it either!

Overall he has done a good job. I don't agree with everything he has done but he definitely shouldn't be sacked.

He's done a good job even if his last selections and performances have been strange. Personally I'd like to see Potter as the man to replace him at some point. If we do well at the Euros, he will deservedly get the World Cup too.

Southgate has done a good job and certainly deserves his chance to lead into Euros

also most of the leading figures wouldn’t be interested at all

Mourinho would hate international management as he stated that he loves the day to day interaction with players and the game every 4 days cycle. I think he’d only do it once he had properly maxed out his club career.

Klopp will first manage Germany so that’s not a short term option. And I think Pep will fancy a gig at Juventus before trying out for Spain.

doubt Bielsa would be interested either right now and Leeds project will consume him for few more years.

I think Wenger would be amazing if he’d agree to it.

so you’re left with boring English choices

Southgate is the man for me. With little experience at all, all be it with a lot of luck with the draw he took the worst ENgland squad we have had for some time to the semi finals of the world cup. His leadership and installing the correct mentality has been absolutely fantastic.

All entitled to our opinions, but I think it is absolutely ludicrous criticising the job he has done. Has handled everythign thrown at him (which has been a lot the last couple of months) excellenty. People talking about tactics and team selections.....Capello and Eriksen were both supposedly tactically very astute, got us nowhere as didnt understand the mentality of English players. I think an English manager is the right way and there are some decent young managers but none to replace SOuthgate.

WHy such criticism about five at the back? We have an abundance of fantastic young attacking talent, but currently a dearth of quality centre backs, that is why there are five, for the added protection, is that not obvious?

I also cant see how there can be such criticism for his selection either considering a lot of it has been taken out of his hands....this would be the only part of the criticism I can understand though but then hardly anybody would select the same side amongst us, for me at Euros next season:

GK Henderson
RB James
RCB Gomez
CB COdy
LCB Maguire
LB Sakho
CM Rice
CM Kalvin Phillips
LW Sterling
ST Kane
RW Sancho

But that front three there are literally three top quality options for every position and several more for the wide two

Thing with Southgate is it seems that everything he does is preparation for a big knockout game against 'better' opposition.

Not sure if that's a good or bad thing.

Not an England fan by any means but even his team selections annoy me.

Back 5 with 2 holding midfielders?

At least play someone in there with a bit of flair and ball playing ability

Wenger or Brendan Rodgers.

Sourhgate has a done a decent job with some positives- but reminds me a bit of Ole, your not sure if he can take that extra step needed in the future.

Another fair point.

I often find when it comes to the England National team, people who whine them no matter what. Even if criticism is justified, there's never again credit given, just non-stop picking at the flaws or downsides.

I agree with the bulk of your post, but not this part. I can never see Pep managing Spain, due to his support for Catalan independence. One can argue that he can put aside that view for footballing reasons, but him managing Spain will certainly annoy a lot of Catalan nationalists, and I'm sure he knows it.

That's a very valid point.

Do you think he'd ever be interested in England ob, once he's unable to sustain the intensity of managing high pressure elite clubs?

Arsene Wenger would be amazing as England manager. In my opinion your current crop of players is the most balanced that I've seen of any England team in my lifetime, and there is so much quality there. You guys can definitely win a major tournament if you get the right manager to bring it all together.

Allegri would probably do well. Think Dyche would get a tune out of them if he was interested though. Wilder too would probably do quite well.
