Is Harry Maguire now in the same position as Beckham in 1998?

I see this word 'hate' being thrown around on here, but are you sure you are not reading that into comments yourself?

Saying someone isn't good is not hate, and a player has no divine right to being supported. Why would I be so supportive of him? If he is not good enough, he is not good enough. Support and belief aren't going to magically make him into a better player. If he wants supports, he should go to his family; I'm not going to put in much effort.

Yeah, you get people swearing, but that is not hate; that is lack of class.

You get the freaks on Twitter and stuff, but as soon as you sign up to that trash you are asking for it. It is the collective zone of knobheads, so is it really that surprising?
Agreed 100%
"Hate" is almost never actually what's going on when it is used in these forums

This sounds eerily similar to the fans using the term "world class" for anyone who has a string of good games.
When compared to Beckham, Maguire is a nobody. If media had better news, no one would have cared.

Is he feck.

If you offered Real Madrid Beckham back then, they'd have said yes daddy want want.

But if you offer Read Madrid Maguire today, they'll say no gracias amigo, we good with 55 y.o Sergio Ramos.

Beckham was good at football and Maguire isn’t. The only person who can be compared to Maguire atm is Lindelof for how bad both are.

Don’t understand the comparison at all.

And the short answer is, no.

Big difference between a World Cup quarter final v Argentina and a Nations League game v Denmark.

Maguire isn't public enemy number one. He's a laughing stock and a another stick to poke United with.

Not my opinions by the way. Just the way he's treated by opposition fans.
Agree with this, plus Utd fans backed Beckham because he was a true Utd player, been there a long time and was top quality in his performances. Maguire on the other hand....

Why is there a witch-hunt against Maguire? To me it just seems as though the tide has turned against him mostly because he's the world's most expensive defender who has been given the captaincy at Manchester United fairly quickly and isn't really meeting those expectations.

Stamped on Simeone.
That’s a bit of an overstatement. He was on the ground and flicked his leg out at a standing simeone. simeone fell down as if shot.
Simeone’s reaction was more like lamela’s reaction to martial brushing his face.

Beckham was a target by the british media and opposition fans because he was so good, that's the way it works, the greater you are, the more of a target you are. Maguire is more the pantomine bumbling character. He's high profile so will attract his fair share of tabloid headlines, as for opposition fans, fair to say they love to see Maguire not just playing for us but also captaining us. May as well rest him, his confidence is shot, just don't suggest he has a couple of quiet weeks away on some sunny island.

After the world Cup David Beckham was public enemy no.1 because of the media.

Now Maguire could find himself in a similar position.

Beckham was backed by United fans and the club and bounced back and repair his reputation.

Now Maguire is down in the dumps, has a funny shaped head and is playing awfully.

Is it fair to say he's in a similar position and is there any hope for him?
No. He isn't yet public enemy number 1. He is just getting trolled for a seriously rough patch of form. He just needs to clear his head

Don't compare that thug to Beckham.
No, Maguire's just shite. Becks was hounded by imbeciles for one moment of petulance in what otherwise was a stellar career for club and country.
Jesus christ, your brain actually came up with that this quickly? Maguire is an insignificant player from a now insignificant club as far as top level is concerned, in a «friendly» nobody cares about. Him getting arrested in Greece also falls in the category of «I literally couldn’t give a damn», other than just thinking he’s a fool of course.

Beckham was and still is a world-known person, playing for the best team in England and getting red-carded in an important championship-game. Haaaaardly the same.
 Jesus wept....some shite United CB gets a red in a match no one cares about? Certainly not in the same hemisphere as the Beck's red.
No because Beckham was actually class. How long do you back a liability?

A big difference is that back then, the media was the driving force for abuse. Today with social media a small minority of "fans" are much more abusive little children the the media or rival fans could ever hope to be.

He's not very fecking good, is he?

I don't need to get on like an abusive little child to say that he's is what he is.
You want me to do what, send positive vibes about him and pretend like all is okay with him?

He's had one good game in my mind -- that was his debut for us. He's fecking shit and he needs to sort it, or he needs to piss off.

Glasgow resident these days.
Most England fans don’t give a damn about Maguire because they realise how average he is and therefore not a concern - he can be replaced by plenty of other defenders.
Beckham was one of the best players in the team who also had a huge showbiz personality at the time.
Can’t compare the two at all.
Only fans I see bothered about Maguire is United fans who are realising he’s bang average for £80m

Oh, that's abuse now

Not sure about modern day social media fans, but some sensitive social media fans need a cuddle every now and then I guess.

No. Wasnt Beckham blamed for us going out of the tournament? Maguire got sent off in a normal match where another player got sent off. Doesnt seem even slightly close

Ronaldo with the wink against England too when Rooney went off. Both seemed like much bigger deals

Beckham was vilified for causing England's exit from the world cup. Maguire at worst here has lost them a glorified friendly.

Also, Maguire is not significant enough to stir the same kind of vitriol among the public that Beckham could.

People aren't burning effigys of Maguire. It's not anywhere near the level of shit Beckham got.

Not in the slightest. Completely different contexts, and no-one questioned Beckham's quality.

It gets to the point where fans want to know if Maguire has taken the same position as Beckham did on that night in 1998. These millennials.

It is similar very tough for both but very different.

I would say it is tougher for Maguire. Because currently he is on very poor form, playing for an above average team, having a conviction hanging over his head and no father of football (SAF) giving him guidance...its hard but thats football i suppose

All Becks had to do was close rank which he did. Fergie protected him. He had winners around him in the squad, United were winning football matches every week thus gave him the platform to have an amazing season. Yes Opposing fans gave him dogs abuse in grounds but it was like that way BEFORE summer 98 some would say even worse! And he had the press under his little finger in no time.
