It’s all well and good saying the midfield diamond is too narrow but until we give it a proper go we can’t say it won’t work with certainty. We have the perfect midfield personnel for it to work in my opinion ans it’s up to Ole to make it work tactically. The only time we tried it against Everton I thought we played some great football at times.

I would go with Bailly, Lindeolf at the back. Maguire can't be trusted at the moment.

Who is out injured for us right now? Also, which of the 3 new signings that are joining now are eligible to play any minutes? (Presuming Cavani can't)

I'd like to see something like this when everyone is available (Maguire back in when he has sorted himself out).

    -----------------------DDG
    AWB ----- Bailly/Axel ----- Lindelof -----Telles
    ------------------------Fred-------------------------------
    ---------------Bruno --------DVB----------------------

For the weekend I'd play a diamond midfield.

Axel hasn’t played in nearly a year. Starting him in a high pressure away game is a recipe for disaster. I’d give him 20 minutes if we’re winning.

I would like to see this.

    ---------------Henderson--------------
    AWB---Lindleof----Shaw---Telles
    -------Bruno----Fred-----VDB--------
    --------------------Mata---------------------
    -----Greenwood---Rashford---------

    Bruno, Fred and VDB providing
    a hard working midfield.
Creativity with Bruno, Mata and VDB.

Potential crosses from Bruno who can also firm up the right-hand side.
Same with Telles on the left-hand side.

Henderson because why not, let's see if he shines, can't be worse than DDG.

    Or
    ---------------Henderson--------------
    AWB---Lindleof----Shaw---Telles
    -------Mata----Fred-----VDB--------
    -------------------Bruno---------------------
    ------------Ighalo---Rashford---------

Ighalo because he offers something different, holdup play/aerial threat, movement.

    Sub on Pogba for Bruno
    Mctominay for Mata
Greenwood for whoever is playing worse out of Ighalo/Rashford.

Bruce usually likes to roll over for us, we could do with a bit of that this weekend to get our season back up and running.

Hoping to get a look at Telles at some point, and some decent minutes for VDB.

 Bruce is going to pummel us this weekend.
Fully expecting the Joelintons of this world to piss through our defence like a finger through soggy bog roll.

Ole to be out of a job by Monday morning.

Or Ole can do the right thing and drop Martial, Pogba and co and play a team of players that will actually make an effort. We might get a point then

    AWB ----- Bailly ----- Maguire ----- Shaw

Yeah, i think this works better, Fred and Matic can share the load and both can act a bit more as box to box

Martial is suspended and Cavani is definitely unavailable and still in isolation.

Cavani and Martial unavailable and I am assuming that Telles won't be rushed in considering he was in South America playing on Tuesday and will not train with the squad until tomorrow. I also would not drop Maguire as although he is clearly struggling I think losing his place at this point might finish him off, he needs to man up and play through his issues. With Maguire in I would restore Lindelöf as his partner purely on the basis that the partnership is more established and so should help Harry to find his feet in the game.

    DDG
    AWB Lindelöf Maguire Shaw
    Pogba VDB
    Fernandes
    Mata Greenwood Rashford
On the off chance Ole does decide to go with Telles I would switch to a back 3 so that our midfield does not have so much defensive responsibility and I would line up like this.

    DDG
    Lindelöf Maguire Shaw
    Williams Pogba VDB Telles
    Fernandes
    Greenwood Rashford

It is probably flawed in a way my amateurish brain can't comprehend, and I'm sure it won't happen but makes some kind of sense to me!
I'm honestly just desperate to see Fred out there instead of Matic. I feel like at gunpoint I'd have Fred #2 on the list of players I expect to have an 8/10 performance in any given game (after Bruno) so he's #2 on the teamsheet for me now I suppose. Crazy to think De Gea has dropped out of the top 2 but Henderson looks good and more importantly, De Gea looks vulnerable. The forwards feel relatively interchangeable while Rashford is in poor form at least, and Maguire is full of mistakes and Wan-Bissaka's struggles on the ball make it hard to be sure he's significantly better than playing Williams there. But Fred, yeah, he's mobile and engaged and can pass and has been playing well since he turned the corner after his ugly first period here.

I am just so pissed at the moment I think I'm gonna have a breakdown if we manage to feck this up.

As I said, and probably for the reason I stated above, I hope to see some new faces. That way I could at least have some kind of excuse for them if we lose.

Fred, Scott, Brandon, Eric, Bruno, Juan must start. For the rest I don't care. I want to see some energy, winning attitude and balls on the field.

Out of all the people to drop you drop De Gea?

Pogba and Maguire have been a disgrace, I’d rather play Dan James at CB than Maguire at the minute.

Maguire with his physicality is good to have in the box and we just need to have him up and running. I considered dropping Pogba, but I dropped Matic instead. Fred can do the dirty work. Alternatively, play McTominay and vdB.

De Gea has played 3 games in a week. And even if he made a blunder in the last game, I´m not saying that I want to change the keeper permanently, but I think Henderson has a fair chance to get his first start in the PL.

As long as you keep him away from our penalty area, that'll suit me just fine

Can't imagine he'd start Maguire and Pogba and bench van de Beek
Haha of course he will start Pogba. He will shoehorn Pogba in no matter how awful he has been. Same with Bruno, and same with Rashford. If they say they're fit, they will start. If they give the ball away every time they have it, and make no defensive contributions whatsoever, they will start the next game. And the one after.

You might be right with that. Just take away his defensive responsibilities completely, because he isn't doing them anyway. At least now the other lads won't expect him to track runners or make tackles.

Can DVB play in a deeper role? That would help.

And I think putting Greenwood out there as a number 9 right now, at this stage of his development, is almost unkind. He will get brushed aside by their CBs so so so easily. He just isn't physically mature enough to battle against 3 CBs. If they even play 3 CBs. But they might have watched our recent attacking performances and decided that extra caution isn't necessary. Just go 4-4-2 and play us off the park with effort and balls.

I really wish Cavani could come in straight away. But if he can't, it has to be either Rashford or Ighalo.

Speaking of which, did Ighalo play any internationals? I don't recall his nationality right now.

People keep suggesting a 442 with a diamond in midfield, and I don't understand it. In theory it gets our best players all on the pitch together but look at our performances so far, inc the cup games. Every single game the other team has dropped into a low block and made themselves narrow because they know we have nothing on the flanks to threaten with. Playing a narrow 442, playing a 352, whatever it may be and expecting Shaw and AWB to stretch teams is nonsense.

Ole will play the same system he always plays. Greenwood will probably move up top and James or Mata will play on the right. And it will be awful. Bruce will have seen how we've struggled and he'll make sure his players are organised and up for it.
A diamond is not really narrow. A diamond is not how the players start at the kick off. A diamond is the option of playing three options to the player who has the ball. How the whole team moves. Have a look at the explanation of Johan Cruijff on youtube.

We conceded 11 goals in 3 games and we are in bad shape. Ole will go ultra defensive, i am 100% sure. 352 iils nailed thing in this match.
This will be ugly match to watch.

No way Ole will have a go at Newcastle. It will be very dull and tight. Ole needs 3 points to save his job as we won’t pick up much more in the coming fixtures - whole squad out of form and low in confidence.
Ole is a fortunate manager and I expect we will win 1-2 with a penalty or two.
